This paper presents a Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) based simulation and experimental tracer test of flow pattern and turbulent energy dissipation inside a serpentine flocculation basin with continuous operation. Research focused on the evaluation of a specific flow pattern on the hydraulic behavior on the flocculation basin. From the results of CFD simulation and actual tracer test, both results were in good accordance with each other. Also, each Morill index were calculated as 1.5 from CFD simulation and 1.7 from actual tracer test, respectively. Especially, turbulence energy was dissipated relatively higher in the vicinity of inlet to the flocculation basin than other region. The differences between the CFD simulation and actual tracer test were 1.4 min in $T_{50}$, and 1.3 min in $T_p$, respectively.
The Francis-99 is a workshop initiated by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Norway, and Lulea University of Technology (LTU), Sweden, in order to further validate the capabilities of the CFD technologies. The goal of the first workshop is to determine the state of the art of numerical predictions for steady operating conditions. When performing the CFD analysis, some geometry details are often neglected. In case of Francis Turbine, labyrinth seals are usually not include in the simulation domain, this may lead to inaccurate prediction of turbine efficiency. In this study, the CFD analysis for Francis-99 Workshop model has been performed for full domain of machine including top and bottom labyrinth seals. The efficiency value and distribution of velocity and pressure have been investigated and compared to the experimental data obtained from NTNU. By comparing the results, it was found that: With the top and bottom labyrinth seals in the domain, the CFD result was significantly improved in prediction of efficiency at all the operating point, especially at part load.
CFD simulation is widely used in various industries, universities and research centers. In Korea most of the researchers use foreign commercial S/W packages especially in industries. But commercial CFD packages have some problems as limit to source code and very high license foe. So from several years ago open source CFD code has been widely spread as an alternative. But in Korea there are a few users of open source code. Insufficiency of performance validation as for accuracy, robustness, convenience and parallel speed-up is important obstacles of open source code. So we tested some validation cases as to incompressible external aerodynamics and internal flaws and now are doing compressible flaws. As the first stage of compressible flow validation, we simulated Korea next generation high speed train(HEMU). It's running condition is 400km/hr and maximum Mach number reaches up to 0.4. With the high speed train we tested accuracy, robustness and parallel performance of open source CFD code OpenFOAM Because there isn't experimental data we compared results with widely used commercial code. When use $1^{st}$ order upwind scheme aerodynamic forces are very similar to commercial code. But using $2^{nd}$ order upwind scheme there was some discrepancy. The reason of the difference is not clear yet. Mesh manipulation, domain decomposition, post-processing and robustness are satisfactory. Paralle lperformance is similar to commercial code.
To validate the rotor performance analysis, 3D Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) analysis was performed for tilt rotor aeroacoustic model(TRAM). Also, 3D vehicle with rotating rotors was simulated for rotor power effect analysis. Multiple reference frame(MRF) and sliding mesh techniques were implemented to capture the effect of rotor revolution. CFD results were compared with the wind tunnel test results to validate their accuracy. At helicopter mode, CFD analysis predicted lower thrust than the wind tunnel test but CFD results showed good agreement with the test result at cruise mode. Rotor power effect decreased the lift but did not change drag and pitching moment.
A CFD analysis for a thermal mixing experiment during steam jet discharge was performed to develop the analysis methodology for the thermal mixing between steam and subcooled water and to find the optimized numerical method. In the CFD analysis, the steam condensation phenomena by a direct contact was modelled by the so-called condensation region model. The comparison of the CFD results with the test data showed a good agreement as a whole, but a small temperature difference was locally found at some locations. However, the commercial CFD code of CFX4.4 together with the condensation region model can simulate the thermal mixing behaviour reasonably well when a sufficient number of mesh distribution and a proper numerical method are adopted
There are many difficult problems in analyzing the flow characteristics in a high voltage circuit breaker such as shock wave and complex geometries, which may be either static or in relative motion. Although a variety of mesh generation techniques are now available, the generation of meshes around complicated, multi-component geometries like a gas circuit breaker is still a tedious and difficult task for the computational fluid dynamics. This paper presents the CFD program for analyzing the compressible flow fields in a high voltage gas circuit breaker using the Cartesian cut-cell method based on the CFD-CAD integration, which can achieve the accurate representation of the geometry designed by a CAD tools. This technique is frequently satisfied, and it will be almost universally so in the future, as the CFD-CAD traffic increase.
Leakage reduction through annular type labyrinth seals of steam turbine is necessary for enhancing their efficiency and the precise prediction method of seal leakage is needed. In this study, numerical analysis for leakage prediction of the combination-type-staggered-labyrinth seal has been carried out using FLUENT 6 which is commercial CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) code based on FVM (Finite Volume Method) and SIMPLE algorism. The present CFD results are verified with the theoretical analysis based on Bulk-flow concept which has been mainly used in predicting seal leakage. Comparing with the result of Bulk-flow model analysis, the leakage result of CFD analysis shows good agreement within 7.1% error.

Among many factors to be considered for higher safety level requirements, the hull stability in intact and damaged conditions in seaways is of utmost importance. Since the assessment of a damaged ship is complicated due to the highly non-linear behavior, it is widely acknowledged that computational fluid dynamics (CFD) methods are one of the most feasible approaches. Although many research activities are being reported on the damaged ship stability recently, most of them are not designed for validation of CFD studies. In this study, well-designed model tests were performed to build a CFD validation database, which is essential in developing better CFD methods for the damage stability assessment. The geometry of the damaged compartment and test conditions were determined based on preliminary CFD simulations. Free roll decay tests in calm water with both intact and damaged ships were performed and the roll motion characteristics were compared. The damaged ship showed a larger roll damping coefficient and more rapid decrease of roll amplitude than the intact ship. The primary reason of these efforts can be explained by the movement of the flooded water.

The purpose of this study is to analyze the installed performance of the PW206C turbo shaft engine used in the development of the smart UAV(Unmanned Ariel Vehicle) by KARI(Korean Aerospace Research Institute). It mainly aims to investigate performance behavior at installed conditions using both inlet and exhaust losses generated by CFD analysis of the ducts. The ways employed to be able to analyze the performance extensively were mainly rallied out by performing design point analysis of the engine where the performance simulation results from the commercial program 'GASTURB 9' used for simulation were used as inlet boundary condition for the ducts in CFD program The use of CFD tool involve modeling of the ducts to conform with the stipulated shape and sizes as defined by KARI with a grid density that allows reasonable flow characteristics applicable to aircraft components. Respective values of Shaft horse power obtained by varying flight Mach number, Gas generator RPM and Altitude considering several losses inclusive of those estimated by use of CFD tool were then plotted at three conditions with the ECS-OFF, ECS-MAX and at un-installed condition. Reasonable results were obtained as a result of using computational fluid dynamics that can hence be justified as an alternative tool for use in future flow analysis of engine and components.
boiling flow in vertical tube. The multiphase flow model used in this CFD analysis is the two-fluid model in which liquid(water) and gas(vapour) are considered as continuous and dispersed fluids, respectively. A wall boiling model is also used to simulate the subcooled boiling heat transfer at the heated wall boundary. The diameter and heated length of tube are 0.0154 m and 2 m, respectively. The system pressure in tube is 4.5 MPa and the inlet subcooling is 60 K. The near-wall grid size in the non-dimensional wall unit for lqiuid phase ($y^+_{w,l}$) was examined from 101 to 313 at the outlet boundary. The CFD calculations predicted the void distributions as well as the liquid and wall temperatures in tube. The predicted axial variations of the void fraction and the wall temperature are compared with the measured ones. The CFD prediction of the wall temperature is shown to slightly depend on the near-wall grid size but the axial void prediction has somewhat large dependency. The CFD prediction was found to show a better agreement with the measured one for the large near-wall grid, e.g., $y^+_{w,l}$ > 300 at the tube exit.
