  • 6-DOF simulation program is developed in order to increase the efficiency of the store separation analysis. This S/W is much faster than a method based on CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) technology, and allows the simulation of stores with fixed shape as well as with extensible wings, because it uses aerodynamic databases which are prepared beforehand. In this paper, aerodynamic databases of stores are obtained with MSAP(Multi-body Separation Analysis Program), and unsteady damping coefficients are modeled with Missile Datcom. These databases and the 6-DOF simulation program are used to predict the trajectory of an external store, while its wings are being deployed. The analysis results indicate that the safe separations of the store can be achieved not only with the wing fixed but with the wings being deployed.

  • Since a turbomachine has complex flow characteristics, which are caused by adverse pressure gradient and high speed motion, an elaborate turbulence model is needed to accurately predict the flow. Some turbulence models such as an algebraic or a two-equation eddy viscosity model have been used for in-house RANS-code, but it is difficult to obtain good result for several complex flows. In this study, Durbin's V2-F turbulence model, which has been known for better prediction for severe flow separation, is applied to T-Flow. It was validated for simple cases such as channel and compressor cascade, and its applicability to turbomachinery was shown by analyzing internal flow of a single rotor. As a result, the V2-F turbulence model shows better blade surface pressure distribution than the one-and-two equation turbulence model.

  • Jeollabuk-do has announced a future plan for the Saemangeum Wind Farm which includes the installation of fourteen wind turbines in a single line, located 500m back from the Saemangeum Seawall. It is anticipated as a positive effect that, for sea breeze blowing toward land, the average wind speed could be accelerated and the wind speed distribution could be uniformized by dint of the seawall, an upstream structure of the turbines. At the same time it is also anticipated as a negative effect that the strength of wind turbulence could be increased due to the flow separation generated at the back end of the seawall. According to the results of the computational fluid dynamics analysis of this paper, it has been observed that, at the 50m zone on the road surface located at the uppermost part of the Saemangeum Seawall, the average wind speed has been accelerated by approximately 6~7% and that wind shear has been decreased by 70%, but this positive effect disappears in the zone situated beyond the 100m from the back end of the seawall. It has also been observed that flow separation exists to a limited extent only below the bottom of the blade-sweeping circle and, furthermore, does not extend very far downstream of the wind. As a conclusion, it can be said that the seawall neither positively nor negatively affects the proposed Saemangeum Seawall Wind Farm layout.

  • Construction waste is known to include a large part of coarse and fine aggregates, which can be recirculated in the industry. Separating those aggregates economically from the waste has been thus considered to be one of the most important issues in this field. In particular, paste mixed in the waste causes significant complain from the inhabitants living near the place where waste-processing equipments are built and operated. In this study, we investigate the operational principle of a newly developed paste separator by using theoretical (in this first part) and CFD (in the second part) analysis. The separator consists of a rotor which turned out to play a significant role in separating those pastes from the aggregates. Under suitable assumptions regarding the air flow velocity as well as the particle velocity, we show that particles can be stagnant at the outlet of the roto channel for a wide range of parameter values, which allow the particles to get enough time to settle down via the gravitation. We also demonstrate such phenomenon by using a simple numerical simulation.

  • Since experiments on the actual operational status are said to be very impractical because of their economic and repeatability problems, it is difficult to understand the thermal profiles of aerospace or military equipments. Thus, the CFD codes with considering the radiation heat transfer are used to compensate the defect. In case, analyzing the radiation exchanges between the object surfaces are very important. Because the temperature and the IR signal distributions of the object surface are significantly affected by the radiative heat transfer. To achieve accurate thermal radiation exchange between surfaces, it is important to calculate the radiation view factor precisely. Finer subdivision of meshes can be used to increase the accuracy of radiation view factor, but if the mesh is subdivided infinitely, the time required for calculation increases significantly and thus decreasing the efficiency. If the subdivision is not sufficient, assurance of accuracy is not guaranteed. In this paper, optimal mesh subdivision method using the solid angle has been successfully tested and found to be useful in increasing the efficiency of calculating the shape factors.

  • In this study, using the FDS as the fire simulation and evacuation simulations of the Pathfinder, set the main control room of the building to the fire point fire safety assessment studies were carried out. At first the quantitative result such as distribution of visibility as time passing, distribution of temperature, distribution of CO density produced results using fire-simulation and evacuation-simulation was carried out based on the result that produced the final safety evaluation result as being calculated of evacuation time. As the risk increased with the distribution of visibility at the result of fire-simulation, evacuation-simulation was carried out using the result. Finally the result was made 127.9 sec that everyone could evacuate. The numerical results are analyzed in case of the places in the building required safe egress time for safety a as the analysis to be no more than available safe egress time was analyzed to be secured. The results of this safety evaluation represent that more smooth evacuation safety performance can be secured by linking the event of fire firefighting equipment as a result of simulating the worst conditions.

  • This study investigated the influence of air staging on combustion and NOx emission in a tangential-firing boiler at a 560 MWe capacity. For air staging, the stoichiometric ratio (SR) for the burner zone was varied from 0.995 to 0.94 while the overall value was fixed at 1.2. The temperature and heat flux in the burner zone and upper furnace corresponded to the distribution of SR, while the total boiler efficiency remained similar. The NOx emission at the furnace exit was reduced by up to 20% when the SR in the burner zone decreased to 0.94. However, the amount of unburned carbon and slagging propensity was not noticeably influenced by the changes in the SR of the burner zone. Therefore, it was favorable to lower the SR of the burner zone for reduction of NOx emission.

  • In combustor of SCRamjet of air-breathing engine type, the flow duration time is very short because of the supersonic air flow. In this short duration, the whole process of combustion should be done, so it is very important to study supersonic combustion technologies. In this study, we focus fuel-air mixing enhancement method using cavity and conducted 3-dimensional Navier-Stokes computational analysis. Cavity height is fixed by 10mm, length is changed from 0 to 40mm. There is a supersonic jet injection downstream of the cavity and the hole size is 1mm. As a result, the higher ratio of cavity length/height is, the higher value of vorticity gets. The increased area of vorticity expands to upper and sidewise combustor. However, the stagnation pressure loss which generates thrust loss becomes higher when the vorticity is higher. Considering these result, we can conclude that optimized design which considers the highest mixing performance and the least stagnation pressure loss is needed.

  • Recently, efficient heat dissipation has become necessary because of the miniaturization of devices, and research on boiling on micro-channels has attracted attention. However, in the case of micro-channels, the friction coefficient and heat transfer characteristics are different from those in macro-channels. This leads to large errors in the micro scale results, when compared to correlations derived from the macro scale. In addition, due to the complexity of the mechanism, the boiling phenomenon in micro-channels cannot be approached only by experimental and theoretical methods. Therefore, numerical methods should be utilized as well, to supplement these methods. However, most numerical studies have been conducted on macro-channels. In this study, we applied the lattice Boltzmann method, proposed as an alternative numerical tool to simulate the boiling phenomenon in the micro-channel, and predicted the bubble growth process in the channel.

  • In this paper, the unsteady incompressible Navier-Stokes equations coupled with energy equation were solved to find out the optimal location of electrical heat trace for anti-freeze of water inside the pipe for fire protection. Since the conduction equation of pipe was coupled with the natural convection of water, the analysis of conjugate heat transfer was conducted. A commercial code (ANSYS-FLUENT) based on SIMPLE-type algorithm was used for investigating the unsteady flows and temperature distributions in water region. From the numerical experiments, the isotherms and the vector fields in water region were obtained. Furthermore, it was found that the lowest part of the pipe cross-section was an optimal position of electrical heat trace assuming the constant thermal expansion coefficient of water since the minimum temperature of the water with the position is higher than those with the other positions.
