  • The main objective of this a paper is to improve the efficiency of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) by using an improved direct torque control (DTC) strategy. The basic idea behind the proposed strategy is to predict the impact of a small change in the stator flux amplitude at each sampling period to decrease electrical loss before the change is applied. Accordingly, at every sampling time, a voltage vector is predicted and applied to the machine to fulfill the flux change. The motor drive simulations confirm a significant improvement in efficiency as well as a very fast and smooth response under the proposed strategy.

  • Nanostructured materials are attracting increased interest and application. Exciting perspectives may be offered by electrical insulation. Epoxy/Organoclay nanocomposites may find new and upgraded applications in the electrical industry, replacing conventional insulation to provide improved performances in electric power apparatus, e.g, high voltage motor/generator stator winding insulation, dry mold transformer, etc. In the paper work, the electrical and thermal properties of epoxy/organoclay nanocomposites materials were studied. The electrical insulation characteristics were analyzed through the permittivity characteristics. by analyzing the permittivity spectra, it was found that dielectric constant becomes smaller with increase frequency and becomes larger with increase temperature. This indicates restriction of molecular motion and strong bonds at the epoxy/organoclay nanocomposites. The morphology of nanocomposites obtained was examined using TEM and X-ray diffraction. It has been shown that the presence of polar groups leads to an increased gallery distance and partial exfoliation. Nevertheless, full exfoliation of clay platelets has not been achieved.

  • This paper presents an online voltage disturbance estimator to achieve precise torque control of IPMSMs over a high speed operating region. The proposed design has a type of state-filter based on a Luenburger-style closed loop stator current vector observer. Utilizing the frequency response plot (FRF) approach, the estimation accuracy and the parameter sensitivities are analyzed. Accurate torque control and improved efficiency are provided with the decoupling of the effect of the parameter variations. The feasibility of the presented idea is verified by laboratory experiments.

  • This paper proposes a control strategy of total output power ripple cancellation for both of Machine-Side Converter (MSC) and Grid-Side Converter (GSC) in a DFIG under unbalanced grid conditions. The proposed control strategy for the MSC is the zero torque ripple control algorithm with an enhanced LVRT capability. The control algorithm for the MSC exhibits reduced torque pulsation in steady-state unbalanced grid conditions. In addition, this control algorithm also minimizes a peak value of rotor current in transient unbalanced grid conditions. The total output power ripple cancellation control algorithm is adopted in the GSC. The total output power ripple cancellation is achieved by nullifying the oscillating component of the total output active and reactive power at the summing point of stator and rotor of DFIG. The proposed control strategy for the GSC reduces the output power oscillation leading to the improved quality of wind farms output.

  • The flow angle at the inlet and exit of a rotor or stator is an important design parameter involved in the design a fan blade. Flow angles along the radial direction for 3-D stacking are calculated using two kinds of vortex methods, i.e. free vortex method and forced vortex method. The performance test shows that a fan designed by the free vortex method is more efficient than a fan designed by the forced vortex method. As a reference, an imported fan is tested. Even though the straightner of the imported fan is used for the comparison test, the difference of efficiency between the imported fan and the fan designed by the free vortex method is negligible. The noise of the fan designed by the free vortex method is less than that of the imported fan. A bellmouth installed at the fan inlet improved the fan efficiency more than $10\%$.

  • This paper is related to the improvement of efficiency for high performance centrifugal pumps by reducing leakage loss, which is achieved by applying the grooved seal as a non-contact seal to the pumps. Various combinations of grooved seal types, including the spiral and the parallel groove in the rotor and/or in the stator, were tested by the experiment. And the corresponding hydraulic performance and the magnitude of axial thrust were measured and calculated for ten cases. From the results, the type with the spiral groove(spiral angle : $0.98^{\circ}$) in both the rotor and the stator was found to be most effective. In this case, the head and the efficiency were improved from the original design by 2.1% and 2.3% respectively at design capacity($340m^3/h$), and the axial thrust was decreased by 10%.

  • This paper proposes a speed-sensorless induction motor control system using a rotor speed compensation. To explain the proposed system, this paper describes an induction motor model in the synchronous reference frame for the vector control. The rotor flux is estimated by the rotor flux observer using the reduced-dimensional state estimator technique. The estimated rotor speed is directly obtained from the electrical frequency, the slip frequency, and the rotor speed compensation with the estimated q-axis rotor flux. The error of the rotor time constant is indirectly reflected in the rotor speed compensation using the compensation of the flux error angle. To precisely estimate the rotor flux, the actual value of the stator resistance, whose actual variation is reflected, is derived. An implementation of pulse-width modulation (PWM) pulses using an effective space vector modulation (SVM) is briefly mentioned. For fast calculation and improved performance of the proposed algorithm, all control functions are implemented in software using a digital signal processor (DSP) with its environmental circuits. Also, it is shown through experimental results that the proposed system gives good performance for the speed-sensorless induction motor control.

  • This paper presents an optimal design of a brushless DC motor considering an advanced $165^{\circ}$ 12 step control for a cost reduction. The advanced 12 step control that extends the conduction angle $150^{\circ}$ can improve the output of the motor. The optimal design considering the improved output power of the motor is proposed by reducing the volume of rotor, stator and permanent magnet using response surface method. The proposed design satisfied the performance requirements and efficiency improvement of the conventional motor and reduced the volume about 3.5%. The feasibility of the optimal design is proved by the electromagnetic field analysis using the finite element method.

  • A new method of induction motor drive, which requires not shaft encoder, is presented. This system has both torque and speed controls that are performed by vector control. The scheme is on the basis of a rotor flux speed control, which is performed by torque producing current and rotor flux, derived from the stator voltages and currents. But, there is a problem with respect to the calculated rotor flux vector, which is an integrating operation by which the rotor induced voltage is converted into the rotor flux. The calculated rotor flux does not work so that it is unstable in initial operation, as motor speed approaches zero. For the proposed rotor flux estimator, a lag circuit is employed, to which both the motor-induced voltage and rotor flux command are imposed, and it is possible to calculate even a low frequency down to standstill. We show the validity of the proposed control method through several computer simulations.

  • The interior permanent-magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM) is often used for the traction motor of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) due to its high power density and wide speed range. This paper introduces the 120kW class IPMSM for traction motors in military trucks. This system, as a SHEV (series hybrid electric vehicle), requires a traction motor that can generate high torque. This study introduces a way to reduce costs by proposing a design approach that creates reluctance torque that can be maximized by varying the dq-axis inductance. If a model designed by a design approach meets the desired torque, the magnetic torque can be reduced by an amount equal to the increase in reluctance torque and consequently the amount of permanent magnets can be reduced. A reduction gear and high speed operation of motors are necessary for the miniaturization of the motor. Thus, a fairly large centrifugal force is generated due to the high speed rotation. This force causes mechanical interference between the rotor and the stator, and a design approach for adding an iron bridge is explained to solve the interference. In this study, the initial model and the improved model that reduces cost and improves mechanical durability are compared by FEA, and the models are produced. Finally, the FEM results were verified experimentally.
