  • Since the inception of the idea to develop an X-ray laser in 1960's, a rapid progress to demonstrate soft X-ray lasers in the wavelength region below 300$\AA$ has been made during the last ten years. Among many prospective proposals, the recombination scheme and the collisional exitation scheme have been most successful in achieving a significant gain. An appreciable single-pass amplification was achieved at 182 $\AA$ from CVI ions using the recombination scheme and at 206 and 290$\AA$ from the Se XXV ions using the collisional excitation scheme. The current research on X-ray lasers emphasizes the enhancement of amplification upto saturation and the extension of operating wavelength to shorter wavelengths, especially to the water window region between 23 and 44 $\AA$. X-ray lasers are expected to open many application fields, such as X-ray laser microscopy, X-ray holography, X-ray lithography, and more, in the near future.

  • With advancements in underwater stealth technology for naval vessels, new sensor configurations for detecting targets have been attracting increased attention. Latest underwater mines adopt multiple sensor configurations that include electric field sensors to detect targets and to help acquire accurate ignition time. An underwater electric field sensor consists of a pair of electrodes, signal processing unit, and preamplifier. For detecting underwater electric fields, the preamplifier requires low-noise amplification at ultra-low frequency bands. In this paper, the specific requirements for low-noise preamplifiers are discussed along with the experimental results of various setups of matched transistors and chopper stabilized operational amplifiers. The results showed that noise characteristics at ultra-low frequency bands were affected significantly by the voltage noise density of the chopper amplifier and the number of matched transistors used for differential amplification. The fabricated preamplifier was operated within normal design parameters, which was verified by testing its gain, phase, and linearity.

  • The amplifier properties of single distributed feedback dye laser with 106 ps pulse width and 616 nm wavelength were invested using only one XeCl-excimer laser as pump source. For optimized amplification of DFDL, the three-stage amplifiers were arranged with increasing cross-section and accordingly increasing pump energies. The first AmpI, II stages were dye cell of 5 mm, 10 mm and contained a $6{\times}10^{-4}$ [mol/l](solvent : Methanol) of Rhodamine 610. Double-pass amplification in the AmPII was measured to suppress the ASE by using a diffraction grating. The beam intensity of AmpI, II was saturated with a gain of respectively 10 and 48. The last AmpIII was Bethune cell of 30 mm and contained a $3{\times}10^ {-4}$ [mol/l] (solvent : Ethanol) of Rhodamine 610. In the single-pass and double-pass amplification, the output energy was obtained 168.2 $\mu$J and 471$\mu$J respectively.

  • In this paper, we analyse the effect of the path imbalances(gain and phase mismatches) in LINC(LInear amplification with Nonlinear Component) system, and propose a simple scheme using LUTs(Look Up Table) to compensate the path imbalances. The EVM(Error Vector Magnitude) and ACPR(Adjacent Channel Power Ratio) of the LINC system are degraded significantly by the path imbalances because it adopts an outphasing technique. The EVM and ACPR are theoretically extracted for two variables(gain and phase mismatch factors) and 2-D LUTs for those are generated based on the analysis. The efficient and simple compensation scheme for the path imbalances is proposed using the 2-D LUTs. A LINC system with the suggested compensation scheme is implemented, and the proposed method is verified with an experiment. A 16-QAM signal with 1.5 MHz bandwidth is used. Before the compensation, the path gain ratio was 95 % and phase error was $19.33^{\circ}$. The proposed scheme adjusts those values with 99 % and $0.5^{\circ}$, and improves ACPR about 18.1 dB.

  • In this paper, a LNA(Low Noise Amplifier) has been developed, which is operating at L-band i.e., 1452∼1492 MHz for satellite DAB(Digital Audio Brcadcasting) receiver. The LNA is designed to improve input and output reflection coefficient and VSWR(Voltage Standing Wave Ratio) by balanced amplifier. The LNA consists of low noise amplification stage and gain amplification stage, which make a using of GaAs FET ATF-10136 and VNA-25 respectively, and is fabricated by hybrid method. To supply most suitable voltage and current, active bias circuit is designed Active biasing offers the advantage that variations in $V_P$ and $I_{DSS}$ will not necessitate a change in either the source or drain resistor value for a given bias condition. The active bias network automatically sets $V_{gs}$ for the desired drain voltage and drain current. The LNA is fabricated on FR-4 substrate with RF circuit and bias circuit, and integrated in aluminum housing. As a reults, the characteristics of the LNA implemented more than 32 dB in gain. 0.2 dB in gain flatness. lower than 0.95 dB in noise figure, 1.28 and 1.43 each input and output VSWR, and -13 dBm in $P_{1dB}$.

  • The PhotoAcoustic Microscopy (PAM) has been proved to be a useful tool for biological and medical applications due to its high spatial and contrast resolution. PAM is based on transmission of laser pulses and reception of PA signals. Since the strength of PA signals is generally low, not only are high-performance optical and acoustic modules required, but high-performance electronics for imaging are also particularly needed for high-quality PAM imaging. Most PAM systems are implemented with a combination of several pieces of equipment commercially available to receive, amplify, enhance, and digitize PA signals. To this end, PAM systems are inevitably bulky and not optimal because general purpose equipment is used. This paper reports a PA signal receiving system recently developed to attain the capability of improved Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) and Contrast to Noise Ratio (CNR) of PAM images; the main module of this system is a low noise, wideband signal receiver that consists of two low-noise amplifiers, two variable gain amplifiers, analog filters, an Analog to Digital Converter (ADC), and control logic. From phantom imaging experiments, it was found that the developed system can improve SNR by 6.7 dB and CNR by 3 dB, compared to a combination of several pieces of commercially available equipment.

  • We report effcient cascaded Raman generation and signal amplification at 1.3.mu.m achieved in a ring resonator constructed solely from fiber components, i.e. fusion WDM couplers. Low-loss single-mode fiber with moderate $GeO_2$ content (18 mole %) is used as an active medium and pumped by a Nd:YAG laser at 1.064.mu.m. In a resonant cascaded geometry, this generates the third Stokes line at 1.24.mu.m, which acts as a pump for signal wavelength around 1.3.mu.m. A DFB laser operating at 1.315.mu.m is used to provide an input signal. An output signal powers up to 20 dBm (100 mW) with a 28 dB Raman gain are attained, where the Nd:YAG pump power is 3.4 W. It is also shown experimentally that it is important to use optical filters to suppress feedback from the resonator, permitting high Raman gain and good signal quality.

  • It is widely observed that in practical wireless cooperative communication systems, different links may experience different fading characteristics. In this paper, we investigate into the outage probability and channel capacity of two-way amplify-and-forward (TWAF) relaying systems operating over a mixed asymmetric Rician and Rayleigh fading scenario, with different amplification policies (AP) adopted at the relay, respectively. As TWAF relay network carries concurrent traffics towards two opposite directions, both end-to-end and overall performance metrics were considered. In detail, both uniform exact expressions and simplified asymptotic expressions for the end-to-end outage probability (OP) were presented, based on which the system overall OP was studied under the condition of the two source nodes having non-identical traffic requirements. Furthermore, exact expressions for tight lower bounds as well as high SNR approximations of channel capacity of the considered scenario were presented. For both OP and channel capacity, with different APs, effective power allocation (PA) schemes under different constraints were given to optimize the system performance. Extensive simulations were carried out to verify the analytical results and to demonstrate the impact of channel asymmetry on the system performance.

  • This paper presents the design methodology of an unknown input observer for Lipschitz nonlinear systems with unknown inputs in the framework of convex optimization. We use an unknown input observer (UIO) to consider both nonlinearity and disturbance. By deriving a sufficient condition for exponential stability in the linear matrix inequality (LMI) form, existence of a stabilizing observer gain matrix of UIO will be assured by checking whether the quadratic stability margin of the error dynamics is greater than the Lipschitz constant or not. If quadratic stability margin is less than a Lipschitz constant, the coordinate transformation may be used to reduce the Lipschitz constant in the new coordinates. Furthermore, to reduce the maximum singular value of the observer gain matrix elements, an object function to minimize it will be optimally designed by modifying its magnitude so that amplification of sensor measurement noise is minimized via multi-objective optimization algorithm. The performance of UIO is compared to a nonlinear observer (Luenberger-like) with an application to a flexible joint robot system considering a change of load and disturbance. Finally, it is validated via simulations that the estimated angular position and velocity provide true values even in the presence of unknown inputs.

  • We implemented DPGC(Double-Pass Gain-Clamped) L-band EDFA for highly efficient amplification. A lasing signal generated within the linear cavity, can minimize the fluctuation of surviving channels when several WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) channels are added or dropped. The new method describing the characteristics of transient response of surviving channels quantitatively is suggested. It is to measure the ratio of lasing output before add or drop to that after add or drop. We investigated dynamic characteristics by using this method according to lasing wavelengths and propagation directions within the cavity. The experimental measurements show that the short lasing wavelength and backward propagation direction is the best condition for small fluctuation of surviving channels.
