  • An ultramafic complex occurs as an isolated lenticular body in the Andong area. The Andong ultramafic complex comprises ultramafic and mafic rocks, but mainly peridotites. The complex extends for several kilometer to ENE direction, adjacent to the Andong fault line. This study is for petrochemistry of the peridotites within the ultramafic complex and characteristics of asbestos occurrences. The peridotites are igneous origin, ranging from lherzolite to wehrlites and are characterized by high Fo olivine ($Fo_{0.85-0.87}$), Mg clinopyroxene ($Mg_{87.5-93.5}$), and tremolitic to tschermakitic hornblende. Geochemically, these rocks show high magnesium number (mainly Mg = 85.3-87.38) and transitional element and low alkali element contents. The peridotites host asbestos, including chrysotile, tremolite and actinolite asbestos, but dominated by amphibole asbestos. The amphibole asbestos are found along small fault face, and cleavage and fracture showing several cm to ten cm in width as slip and oblique fibers, while the chryostiles occur at cleavage and vein showing several mm-cm in width as cross and slip fibers. They are confirmed by PLM, XRD and SEM results. Overall characteristics of peridotites from the Andong ultramafic complex and occurrences of the asbestos are similar to those of worldwide orogenic related Alpine type ultramafic rocks and serpentinized ultramafic bodies in Chungnam, Korea, respectively.

  • Microprobe analyses have disclosed geochemical compositions of the main components such as garnet, pyroxene, amphibole, chlorite, biotite, and muscovite in the Sangdong W skarn deposit and this study has identified several minerals which were previously unrecorded from this deposit; they are scapolite, zeolite, K-feldspar, rutile. illite and apophyllite. The $Fe^{+3}/Fe^{+2}$ or Mg/(Mg+Fe) ratios of coexisting minerals represents that these minerals were partially in equilibrium.

  • Rare earth contents(REE) were analysed for the plants, M. sinensis. A. vulgaris and R. crataegitolius, from two different soils serpentine area consisting of serpentinite(SP) and non-serpentine area, containing amphibole schist(AS) of Gapyeong area, and were compared with soils and host rocks. The AS were high with the differences of several times in the top soils, and with the differences of several to ten times in the host rocks relative to the SP. In the same area, the SP were high in the soil, but the rocks for the AS. In the plants, the A. vulgaris were high, but low in the R. crataegitolius. Root parts were higher than the upper parts. Differences between the upper and root parts were big in the SP rather than the AS, and were big in the R. crataegitolius, but small in the M. sinensis. Among the parts of the plants, high elements were shown in the R. crataegitolius of the SP, and the A. vulgaris and M. sinensis of the AS. In the correlation coefficients, most of the REE showed positive relationships among the element pairs, especially high positive correlation coefficients in the upper parts of the SP.Differences of the soils and plants(average) were smalle in the M. sinensis and big in the R. crataegitolius. In the upper parts. contents of the A. vulgaris were close to the soils while the R. crataegitolius showed large discrepancies with the soils. In the root parts, contents of the A. vulgaris showed discrepancies with the soils regardless of soil types, but close in the R. crataegitolius of the SP and M. sinensis of the AS.

  • Electron microscopy of the tremolite-actinolite series amphiboles from the naturally occurring asbestos locality showed the morphological diversity including fibrous, acicular, and prismatic. Very thin, long, and flexible fibers of constant width form ropy bundles or mats. Acicular particles are slightly thick, long, elastic, and easily separated from the bundle of parallel rods. Acicular fragments of lower aspect ratio are formed during the crushing of the amphibole prism. Morphological features of the amphiboles are different depending on their localities and vary in a specimen. Morphological continuum between amphibole fiber and prism requires the establishment of reliable identification criterions and sample preparation protocol based on the relation between carcinogenicity and morphological features.

  • Metabasites and metapelites in the Mungyong area were intruded by Cretaceous granites with radius of 4-8 km. As the distance from granite body increases, the mineral assemblage of metabasite changes from amphibole + plagioclase through amphibole + plagioclase + epidote to amphibole + plagioclase + epidote + chlorite. The compositional variations of amphibole and plagioclase according to the change of metamorphic grade and bulk rock compositions are very complex. Towards the Mungyong Cretaceous granite body, the mineral assemblage of metapelite changes from chlorite+ muscovite(ch1orite zone) through biotite + chlorite + muscovite(biotite zone) to andalusite+biotite + muscovite${\pm}$chlorite or cordierite+ biotite+ muscovite${\pm}$chlorite(cordierite zone). The estimated metamorphic conditions of cordierite zone are 480~$580^{\circ}C$ 1.5-3.3 kb. The theoretical study on the thermal metamorphism caused by the Cretaceous granite with radius longer than 4 km in the Mungyong area suggests the followings: The degree of metamorphism is mainly determined not by the size of granite body but by the temperature of granite intrusion; The country rocks within 2 km from Cretaceous granite have undergone metamorphism with temperature higher than $500^{\circ}C$, which is consistent with the petrological study in the Mungyong area. Mungyong Cretaceous granite caused a low P/T thermal metamorphism to the country rocks; the amphibolite facies metamorphism to the country rocks within 1-2 km from the granite body and the epidote-amphibolite and greenschist facies metamorphism to the country rocks within 2-5 km.

  • This study is focused on petrochemistry and petrogenesis of alkali granite which exposed at northern area of the Uljin mine in NE Korea. The rock is corresponded to the range of alkali feldspar granite and alkali feldspar quartz syenite on IUGS classification and contains characteristic Fe-rich biotite (annite) and sodic alkali amphibole (arfvedsonite). The alkali granite is the hypersolvus one-feldspar granite which is characterized by the absence of plagiclase except as a component of perthite and its normatve An contents are less than 5wt%. The bulk compositions of the alkali granite show reverse trends compared to Daly's. Tuttle and Bowen (1958) experimentally support that properties of the hypersolvus granite indicate that they have crystallized at high temperatures from a magma.

  • Dok island comprises Pliocene volcanic products such as a series of volcanoclastic rocks and lavas ranging in composition from alkali basalts, and trachyandesites to trachytes. Compositional variation of the basaltic rocks can be attributed to fractional crystallization of olivine, clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and magnetite. Chemical variations among the trachyandesites are caused by fractionation of clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and magnetite with minor amphibole, while trachytes are controlled mainly by feldspar fractionation. Incompatible element abundance ratios and chondrite normalized LREE/HREE ratios (e.g., (La/Yb)c: 24.8 to 32.8 for basalts, 15.6 to 31.2 for trachyandesites) suggest that the origins of the basalts and trachyandesites involve both different degrees of partial melting and subsequent fractional crystallization processes. Trace element ratios of the basalts from Dok island are characterized by high Ba/Nb, La/Nb, Ba/Th and Th/U and isotopic ratios (Tasumoto and Nakamura, 1991) that are similar to the EM 1 type of oceanic island basalts such as Gough and Tristan da Cunha basalts.

  • Geochemical and Sm-Nd isotopic results are reported for amphibolite of the Muju area, Ryeongnam massif. Major and trace element data analyzed indicate that the parental rock of the Muju amphibolite is tholeiitic basalt. The Sm-Nd amphibole-WR-plagioclase data define an isochron corresponding to $1766{\pm}121Ma$ ($1{\sigma}$) (MSWD=1.10) with an initial ratio of $0.51032{\pm}15$. We interpret this age as a metamorphic age of the Muju amphibolite. Tectonic discrimination diagrams clearly fail when they are applied to the Muju amphibolite probably due to compositional variations resulting from crustal contamination and/or degrees of partial melting.

  • Fluid inclusion study reveals that the mineralogical zonal distribution of the Sangdong skarn orebody may be likely related to (homogenization) temperatures of fluids with time and spaces. Firstly limestone beds were replaced by hot boiling fluids ranging from 350 to $550^{\circ}C$ and formed the pyroxene-garnet skarn, which was replaced into the amphibole and the quartz-mica skarns by non-boiling fluids at 300 to $500^{\circ}C$, mainly penetrated the central part of the pyroxene-garnet skarn orebody. Freezing tests identify presence of $CaCl_2$ and $MaCl_2$ as brines in the fluids besides NaCl and KCL that are shown as daughter minerals and show that two or more fluids be involved in mineralization by showing a bimodal distribution of salinities. This study has contributed to find a new orebody and a granitic pluton as a source rock.

  • Aiming to elucidate the formation processes of Myeonsan wetland around the ridge from Myeonsan peak to Seokgae pass, this paper analyzes the geomorphic, physical and chemical characteristics of the wetland. The results are as follow: Firstly, resistant bedrock and big boulders distributed on the riverbed of the small channel from the wetland to Seokgaecheon have played a role as a temporary base level. At the upstream part above this point, a wide and shallow depression was formed and developed into a wetland. There was a gorge covered with boulders at downstream part. Secondly, owing to the obstacles at the outlet of wetland, deposits on bed tend to be downstream coarsening. Finally, deposits show weak acidity of pH 5.0~5.7. The source of wetland water is groundwater containing rich Ca and Na. Trees in the wetland help much more Ca accumulated. And deposit biotite and amphibole contained rich Mg have been weathered in the wetland.
