Trickling filter has been extensively studied for the domestic wastewater treatment especially for the small scale plants in rural area. The performance of the trickling filter depends on the microbial community and their activity in the biofilms on the media. Nitrification. denitrification, and phosphorus removal of the trickling filter from the wastewater depend on the activity and the amount of the specific microorganisms responsible for the metabolism. For the estimation of the performance of a trickling filter, batch nitrification experiment and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) were carried out to measure the microbial activity and its distribution on the media of the trickling filter. Batch nitrification activity measurement showed that the top part of the 1st stage trickling filter had the highest nitrification activity and the maximum activity was 0.002 g $NH_4$-N/g MLVSS${\cdot}$h. It is thought that higher substrate (ammonia) concentration yields more nitrifying bacteria in the biofilms. The dominant ammonia oxidizer and nitrite oxidizer in the biofilm were Nitrosomonas species and genus Nitrospira, respectively, by FISH analysis. Less denitrifiers were found than nitrifiers in the biofilm by the probe Rrp1088 which specifically binds to Rhodobacter, Rhodovulum, Roseobacter, and Paracoccus. Phosphorus accumulating bacteria were mostly found at the surface of the biofilm by probe Rc988 and PAO651 which specifically binds to Rhodocyclus group and their biomass was less than that of nitrifiers.
The lack of seed sludges for Ammonium Oxidizing Bacteria (AOB) and slow-growing ANaerobic AMMonium OXidation (ANAMMOX) bacteria is one of the major problem for large-scale application. In this study, $24m^3$ of single-stage SBR (Sequencing Batch Reactor) was operated to remove nitrogen from reject water using AOB and ANAMMOX bacteria cultivated from activated sludge in the field. The ANAMMOX activity was found after 44 days of cultivation in the ANAMMOX cultivation reactor, and then $0.66kg\;N/m^3/d$ of the nitrogen removal rate was achieved at $0.78kg\;N/m^3/d$ of the nitrogen loading rate at 153 days of cultivation. The AOB cultivation reactor showed $0.2kg\;N/m^3/d$ of nitrite production rate at $0.4kg\;N/m^3/d$ of nitrogen loading rate after 36 days of operation. The cultivated ANAMMOX bacteria and AOB was mixed into the single-stage SBR. The feed distribution was applied to remove total nitrogen stably in the single-stage SBR. The nitrogen removal rate in the single-stage SBR was gradually enhanced with an increase of specific activities of both AOB and ANAMMOX bacteria by showing $0.49kg\;N/m^3/d$ of the nitrogen removal rate at $0.56kg\;N/m^3/d$ of the nitrogen loading rate at 54 days of operation.
Silver as a metal catalyst has been used to remove odorous compounds. In this study, silver particles in nano sizes ($5{\sim}30nm$) were prepared on the surface of $NaHCO_3$, the supporting material, using a sputtering method. The silver nano-particles were dispersed by dissolving $Ag-NaHCO_3$ into water, and the dispersed silver nano-particles in the aqueous phase was applied to remove inorganic odor compounds, $NH_3$ and ${H_2}O$, in a scrubbing reactor. Since ammonia has high solubility, it was removed from the gas phase even by spraying water in the scrubber. However, the concentration of nitrate (${NO_3}^-$) ion increased only in the silver nano-particle solution, implying that the silver nano-particles oxidized ammonia. Hydrogen sulfide in the gas phase was rapidly removed by the silver nano-particles, and the concentration of sulfate (${SO_4}^{2-}$) ion increased with time due to the oxidation reaction by silver. As a result, the silver nano-particles in the aqueous solution can be successfully applied to remove odorous compounds without adding additional energy sources and producing any harmful byproducts.
Ammonia, $NH_3$, is a key chemical widely used in chemical industries and a toxic pollutant that impacts human health. Thus, there is a need for the development of effective adsorbents with high uptake capacities to adsorb $NH_3$. An adsorbent with a high surface area and a small pore size is generally preferred in order to have a high capacity for the removal of $NH_3$. The use inorganic nanoporous materials as gas adsorbents has increased substantially and emerged as an alternative to zeolite and activated carbon. Herein, mesoporous alumina (MA) was prepared and used as an $NH_3$ adsorbent. MA showed good pore properties such as a uniform pore size and interlinked pore system, when compared to commercial adsorbents (activated carbon, zeolite, and silica powder). MA has free hydroxyl groups, serving as useful adsorption sites for $NH_3$. In an adsorption isotherm test, MA exhibited 4.7-6.5 times higher uptake capacities for $NH_3$ than commercial adsorbents. Although the larger surface areas of adsorbents are important features of ideal adsorbents, a regular and interlinked adsorbent pore system was found to be a more crucial factor to adsorb $NH_3$.

The NOx removal performance of the SCR process depends on various factors such as catalytic factors (catalyst composition, shape, space velocity, etc.), temperature and flow rate distribution of the exhaust gas. Among them, the uniformity of the flow flowing into the catalyst bed plays the most important role. In this study, the flow characteristics in the SCR reactor in the design stage were simulated using a three-dimensional numerical analysis technique to confirm the uniformity of the airflow. Due to the limitation of the installation space, the shape of the inlet duct was compared with the two types of inlet duct shape because there were many curved sections of the inlet duct and the duct size margin was not large. The effect of inlet duct shape, guide vane or mixer installation, and venturi shape change on SCR reactor internal flow, airflow uniformity, and space utilization rate of ammonia concentration were studied. It was found that the uniformity of the airflow reaching the catalyst layer was greatly improved when an inlet duct with a shape that could suppress drift was applied and guide vanes were installed in the curved part of the inlet duct to properly distribute the process gas. In addition, the space utilization rate was greatly improved when the duct at the rear of the nozzle was applied as a venturi type rather than a mixer for uniform distribution of ammonia gas.
Activated carbons (ACs) are widely used in adsorption for the removal of gaseous and aqueous pollutants[1]. Although a wide range of carbonaceous materials can be converted into ACs, the coal and lingocellulosic materials are the most commonly used starting materials for the production of commercial ACs. Recently, there are a quite large number of studies regarding the preparation of ACs from various polymeric materials because of high carbon yield and low ash content In this work, ACs are prepared from polystyrene (PS) by chemical activation with potassium hydroxide and the effect of the KOH-to-PS ratio to adsorption of ammonia is investigated. The present study was performed to develop the removal system of the offensive gases, including hydrogen sulfide of acid gas, ammonia or amice of base gas, from the nightsoil treatment plant. In order to remove the offensive gases, the Fe-EDTA system liquid phase catalytic oxidation method with the bubble lift column reactor was employed. From the results obtained, it was confirmed that the offensive gases can be deodorized simultaneously and also hydrogen sulfide of acid gas, ammonia of base gas completely removed at pH 6.45. In addition, as input gases feed rate the efficiency of acid gas did not change but the efficiency of base gases decreased to approximately 90 % at pH 6, 0. From the result of particle size analyzer, it was found that the particle sizes including sulfur and other impurites grew up to $21{\mu}m$ over 72hour reaction time.
The exhaust gas from electric power stations, incinerators and industrial boilers contains considerable amount of harmful nitric oxide which causes air pollution. Selective catalytic reduction system with ammonia as a reductant(NH$_{3}$ SCR) have been applied to remove NOx since 1970. it is widely accepted that the NH$_{3}$ SCR process is the best method for the removal of NOx. In this paper the design of SCR reactor based on the NOx displacement is considered and the design program of SCR reactor is developed. The newly developed design program for de-NOx system maybe used in practice.
