  • The thermal decomposition process of ammonium paratungstate $5(NH_4)_2O{\cdot}12WO_3{\cdot}5H_2O$ was analysed by the methods of thermogravimetric analysis, differential thermal analysis, quantitative analysis of the ammonia which is released during heating and X-ray powder diffraction in air and in vacuo. There are several endothermic peaks which indicate release of ammonia and exothermic peaks which indicate crystal growth and oxidation of decomposed prodects in air. After water is driven off the ammonia is released at intervals corresponding to the endothermic peaks. The highest temperature at which ammonia is released is about $420^{\circ}C$ in air and $480^{\circ}C$ in vacuo. In air the crystal structure of paratungstate is conserved up to a temperature of $300^{\circ}C$ at which the remaining ammonia is about 4 mols. At $320^{\circ}C$ the remaining ammonia becomes less than 2 mols and the paratungstate structure changes into the amorphous state. After that ${\gamma}$ oxide is produced and is oxidized to ${\alpha}$ oxide in the temperature range of 400-$500^{\circ}C$ in air. In vacuo however the endothermic peaks and structural changes occur at lower temperatures and the structure of ${\gamma}$ oxide is conserved up to temperatures higher than $500^{\circ}C$.

  • This study was carried out to find deodorization management method of the efflux from swine slurry treated by thermophilic aerobic oxidation reactor. Three kinds of deodorization methods in Lab-scale reactors, were used in this experiment; No treatment, air injection treatment(50$m\ell$ air/min. $\ell$) and inoculumn of photrophic bacteria treatement(108 cell(Most probable number, MPN)/$m\ell$). The concentration of volatile fatty acids(VFAs), hydrogen sulfide(H2S), and ammonia(NH3) were analyzed during the treatment period(50 days). The major results obtained as follows. 1. Air injection method to efflux showed very high removal effect on malodorants such as VFAs, hydrogen sulfide(H2B). But ammonia(NH3) was emitted to much. 2. PTB inoculum method was also effective in removal of malodorants, VFAs, Hydrogen sulfide(H2S), when it was applied to the efflux. 3. We found that the concentrations of malodorants, VFAs, H2S, NH3 had some relatinships with the pH, ORP, BOD in the efflux.

  • Biofilm airlift reactor was continuously operated to investigate the competitions between the autotrophs and heterotrophs, ammonia oxidizers and nitrite oxidizers, and Nitrobacter and Nitrospira with real wastewater at a C/N ratio of 0.86. As the reactor achieved complete nitrification microbial distribution was analyzed by FISH/CLSM technique. The results showed that heterotroph was more abundant than nitrifying bacteria. Ammonia oxidizers (17%) and Nitrobacter (7%) prevailed nitrite oxidizers (9%) and Nitrospira (2%), respectively.

  • This study is a part of project of urea-SCR system development for an in-use medium duty diesel engine. This study shows the effect of ammonia oxidation catalyst and SCR volume on $NO_X$ reduction performance. When AOC(Ammonia Oxidation Catalyst) is not used, the urea injection should be controlled accurately to prevent $NH_3$ slip. However, it is found that the accurate $NH_3$ slip control is not easy without AOC in real engine operating conditions, because $NH_3$ and $NO_X$ reaction characteristics change with many factors such as exhaust gas temperature and $NH_3$ absorbance on SCR. SCR volume is also one of important design parameters. This study shows that $NO_X$ reduction efficiency increases with increase of SCR volume especially at high space velocity and low exhaust gas temperature conditions. Additionally, this paper shows the emissions of EURO-2 medium duty diesel engine can be improved to the level of EURO-5 with a DPF and urea-SCR system.

  • Free ammonia ($NH_3$-N) inhibition of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (NOB) has been widely studied for partial nitrification (or nitrite accumulation) and denitrification via nitrite ($NO_2^-$-N) as a low-cost treatment of ammonium containing wastewater. The literature on $NH_3$-N inhibition of NOB, however, shows disagreement about the threshold $NH_3$-N concentration and its degree of inhibition. In order to clarify the confusion, a simple and cheap respirometric method was devised to investigate the effect of free ammonia inhibition of NOB. Sludge samples from an autotrophic nitrifying reactor were exposed to various $NH_3$-N concentrations to measure the maximum specific nitrite oxidation rate ($\hat{K}_{NO}$) using a respirometer. NOB biomass was estimated from the yield values in the literature. Free ammonia inhibition of nitrite oxidizing bacteria was reversible and the specific nitrite oxidation rate ($K_{NO}$) decreased from 0.141 to 0.116, 0.100, 0.097 and 0.081 mg $NO_2^-$-N/mg NOB h, respectively, as the $NH_3$-N concentration increased from 0.0 to 1.0, 4.1, 9.7 and 22.9 mg/L. A nonlinear regression based on the noncompetitive inhibition mode gave an estimate of the Inhibition concentration ($K_I$) of free ammonia to be 21.3 mg $NH_3$-N/L. Previous studies gave $\hat{K}_{NO}$ of Nitrobacter and Nitrospira as 0.120 and 0.032 mg/mg VSS h. The free ammonia concentration which inhibits Nitrobacter was $30{\sim}50\;mg$ $NH_3$-N/L and Nitrospira was inhibited at $0.04{\sim}0.08\;mg$ $NH_3$-N/L. The results support the fact that Nitrobacter is the dominant NOB in the reactor. The variations in the reported values of free ammonia inhibition may be due to the different species of nitrite oxidizers present in the reactors. The respirometric method provides rapid and reliable analysis of the behavior and community of the nitrite oxidizing bacteria.

  • The complete oxidation of ammonia to nitrate is a distinctive two-step process divided into the oxidation of ammonia to nitrite(nitritation) by Nitrosomonas and the oxidation of nitrite to nitrate(nitratation) by Nitrobacter. The nitrogen removal via nitrite accumulation offers several advantages such as saving costs for aeration, saving carbon source and finally reduction of sludge discharge. In this work a suspended bioreactor coupled with membrane filtration(MBR) was used to find the process conditions of nitrite build-up. The MBR enables to reach sufficient nitrifying bacteria in the bioreactor, although the autotrophic bacteria can be easily washed out due to their lower growth rate. The dissolved oxygen concentration $c'_{O2}$ and ammonia concentration $c_{NH3}$ in the reactor were varied and investigated as parameters for nitrite accumulation. As a result the higher ammonia concentration in the reactor is very effective for starting nitrite build-up and the effect was strengthened in combination with lower dissolved oxygen concentration. With lower $c'_{O2}<0.3$ $mgL^{-1}$ $O_2$ and high $c_{NH3}=6.3\sim14.9$ $mgL^{-1}$ $NH_3N$ the 74% of the nitrite accumulation was achieved. Specially, it was found that the nitrite accumulation could occur not only in biofilm reactor as many references showed but also in the membrane bioreactor carried out in this study.

  • The catalytic performance of some metal oxides in the vapor phase selective oxidation of $H_2S$ in the stream containing ammonia and water was investigated. Among the catalysts tested $Fe_2O_3/SiO_2$ was the most promising catalyst for practical application. It showed higher than 90% $H_2S$ conversion and very small amount of $SO_2$ emission over a temperature range of $240{\sim}280^{\circ}C$. The effects of reaction temperature, $O_2/H_2S$ ratio, amount of ammonia and water vapor on the catalytic activity of $Fe_2O_3/SiO_2$ were discussed to better understand the reaction mechanism. The $H_2S$ conversion showed a maximum at $260^{\circ}C$ and it decreased with increasing temperature over $280^{\circ}C$. With an increase of $O_2/H_2S$ ratio from 0.5 to 4, the conversion was slightly increased, but the selectivity to elemental sulfur was remarkably decreased. The increase of ammonia amount favored the conversion and the selectivity to elemental sulfur with a decrease in $SO_2$ production. The presence of water vapor decreased both the activity and the selectivity to sulfur, but increased the ATS selectivity.

  • The effects of amino acids and dipeptides on in vitro production of porcine embryos and accumulation of ammonia in culture medium during developmental stages were examined in this study. The maturation, fertilization and development of embryonic cultures were performed in modified Tissue culture medium (mTCM)-199 supplemented with 10% (v/v) porcine follicular fluid, modified Tyrode's albumin lactate pyruvate (mTALP) medium, and modified North Carolina State University (mNCSU)-23 medium, respectively. In addition, amino acids and dipeptides of different concentrations and combinations were used to treat the embryos. The addition of L-alanyl-L-glutamine (AlnGln)+L-glycyl-L-glutamine (GlyGln) significantly (p<0.05) improved oocyte maturation, fertilization and the incorporation and oxidation of 14C(U)-glucose when compared to the control group and other treatment groups. Additionally, 2-4 cell, 8-16 cell, morula and blastocyst development increased significantly (p<0.05) following treatment with AlnGln+GlyGln when compared to the control group and other treatment groups, while this treatment reduced the accumulation of ammonia. Taken together, these findings suggest that treatment with AlnGln+GlyGln may play an important role in increasing the rate of porcine oocyte maturation, fertilization and embryonic development by reducing the level of accumulated ammonia measured in the culture media.

  • The overall goal of this study was to characterize and quantify ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) in four different full-scale sequence batch reactor (SBR) wastewater treatment plants. Also, this study focused on assessing the occurrence of the alternative ammonia-oxidizing microbes such as anammox (anaerobic ammonia oxidation) bacteria (AMX) and ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) in these systems. Based on total AOB numbers and the estimated cell density in the mixed liquor samples, AOB constituted 0.3 - 1.8% of the total bacterial population in the four WWTPs. Based on clone library, Nitrosomonas ureae-like AOB were dominant in plant A and B, while plant C and D had Nitrosomonas nitrosa-like AOB as major AOB group. The four different AMX primer sets targeting AMX 16S rRNA gene produced PCR amplicons distantly related to Chlamydia and Planctomycetales group bacteria. However, it was not clear these groups of bacteria perform anammox reaction in the SBR plants. Also, molecular evidence of AOA was found in one of the SBR plants, with a sequence located in the deep branch of the sediment creanarchaeota group.
