Heat and mass transfer rates to spray water droplets for spray transients in a high pressure vessel have been predicted by two different droplet models: the complete mixing model and the non-mixing model. In this process, the ambient fluid surrounding the droplets is a real-gas mixture composed of saturated steam and noncondensable hydrogen gas at high pressure. The physical properties of the mixture are estimated by applying the concept of compressibility factor and using appropriate correlations. A computer program, DROPHMT, to calculate the heat and mass transfer rates for two different droplet models has been developed. As an illustrative application of the computer program to engineering practices, heat and mass transfer rates to spray water droplets for spray transients in a Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) pressurizer have been calculated, and the typical results have been provided.
An experimental study has been conducted to clarify the effect of vapor on droplet evaporation. Droplets of water, ethanol, n-hexadecane and n-heptane were exposed in air stream. Temperature, pressure, and flow velocity in the ambient air are 470K, 1 atm, and 2m/s, respectively. Measurements are carried out for the wide range of water vapor concentration$(0%\sim40%)$. To obtain the time histories of droplet diameter, suspended droplet in hot and humid air stream was synchronized with a back flash light, and enlarged droplet images were taken on a CCD camera. With the vapor concentration increasing, the evaporation rate constant of water droplet decrease slightly and the droplet of ethanol and n-heptane increase actively. The evaporation rate constant of n-hexadecane which has higher boiling point than water increases within around 30% of the concentration.
Fuel cells convert a fuel together with oxygen in a highly efficient electrochemical reaction to electricity and water. Since the electrochemical reaction in the fuel cell stack dose not generate any noise, Fuel cell systems are expected to operated much quieter than combustion engines. However, the tonal noise and the broad band noise caused by a centrifugal compressor and an electric motor cause which is required to feed the ambient air to the cathode of the fuel cell stack with high pressure. In this study, the multi-camber perforated muffler is used to reduce noise. We propose optimized muffler model using an axiomatic design method that optimizes the parameters of perforated muffler while keeping the volume of muffler minimized.
Two phase thermosyphone loop for electronics cooling are designed and manufactured to test its performance under the partial load and low environment temperature conditions. The thermosyphone device has six evaporators connected parallel for the purpose of cooling six power amplifier units (PAU) independently. The heater modules for simulating PAUs are adhered with thermal pad to the evaporator plates to reduce the contact resistance. There are unbalanced distributions of liquid refrigerant in the differently heated evaporators due to the vapor pressure difference. To reduce the vapor pressure differences caused by partial heating, two evaporators are connected each other using the copper tube. The pressure regulation tube successfully reduces these unbalances and it is good candidates for a field distributed systems. Under the low environment temperature operating condition, such as $-30^{\circ}C$, there may be unexpected subcooling in condenser. It leads the very low saturation pressure, and under this condition there exists explosive boiling in evaporator. The abrupt pressure rise due to the explosive boiling inhibits the supplement of liquid refrigerant to the evaporator for continuous cooling. Finally the cooling cycle will be broken. For the normal circulation of refrigerant there may be an optimum cooling air flow rate in condenser to adjust the given heat load.
Objective to assess whether exposure to air pollutants is associated with postneonatal infant death, using a timeseries methodology, between 1999 and 2003 in Seoul, Korea.. Methods We investigated the short-term effects of air pollution for 548,725 live births during the study period. The daily count of postneonatal infant deaths from all causes and from SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) by birth order was analyzed by a Generalized Additive Poisson model, with controlling for the effects of seasonal trends, air temperature, relative humidity, barometric pressure, and day of the week as covariates. Results During the study period, we observed 699 deaths from all causes and 47 deaths from SIDS. We did not find any significant associations between daily mortality and ambient levels of air pollutants except for CO and $NO_2$. The estimated relative risk of postneonatal infant death from all causes was 1.17 (95% CI=1.04-1.32) and 1.16 (95% CI=1.03-1.29) by IQR (interquartile range) for CO and $NO_2$ respectively. Also, we observed no clear trend of the mortality effects of air pollution by birth orders. Conclusion In conclusion, our findings suggest that air pollution, in general, influenced adversely postneonatal infant death from all-cause and SIDS although it was not statistically significant. This study may support that the rationale.
Injection rate, injection quantity and injection timing of fuel are controlled precisely by electric control in CRDI system. Particularly, injection rate being influenced with injection pressure affects to spray characteristics and fuel-air ratio, so it is a very important factor in diesel combustion. In this study, injection rates in accordance with injection pressure at a constant ambient pressure were measured with Zeuch's method. Under the same condition, non-evaporating spray images were taken with a high speed camera and analyzed carefully with Adobe Photoshop CS3. Macroscopic spray characteristics and breakup processes in the spray could be found from the examined and analyzed data. Injection start time and injection period were practically affected with injection pressure. Also, initial injection rate, spray penetration, spray angle and breakup of high density droplets region in the spray were affected with injection pressure. The results and techniques of spray visualization and injection rate measurement in this study would be practically effective to study a high pressure diesel spray for common rail direct injection system.
This work describes analysis on the effect of inlet air cooling by the cold energy of liquefied natural gas(LNG) on the performance of gas turbines. Gas turbine off-design analysis program to simulate the influence of compressor inlet temperature variation is prepared and an inlet air cooler is modeled. It is shown that the degree of power augmentation is much affected by the humidity of inlet air. If the humidity is low enough, that is the water content of the air does not condense, the temperature drop amounts to $18^{\circ}C$, which corresponds to more than 12% power increase, in case of a $1350^{\circ}C$ class gas turbine with methane as the fuel. Even with 60% humidity, about 8% power increase is possible. It is found that even though the fuel contains as much as 20% ethane in addition to methane, the power improvement does not change considerably. It is observed that if the humidity is not too high, the current system is feasible oven with conceivable air pressure loss at the inlet air cooler.
This study investigated the age dependencies in ambient air pollution-associated asthma hospitalization from 2003 to 2005 in Seoul. For all ages and the age groups of 0-14, 15-64, and 65+years, the Generalized Additive Model (GAM) was used to estimate the relative risks of daily asthma hospitalization associated with changes in particulate matter and ozone. The time-trends, seasonal variances, day effects, temperature, humidity, and pressure at sea level were controlled in the models. Significant associations were observed between asthma hospitalization and the levels of $PM_{10}$ and $O_3$. The relative risks (RRs) of asthma hospitalization for every 10 unit increases in $PM_{10}({\mu}g/m^3)$ and $O_3$(ppb) were 1.008 (95% CI 1.005-1.012), and 1.012 (95% CI 1.003-1.020), respectively. Evaluated over $10\;{\mu}g/m^3$ increase in $PM_{10}$, we found the relative risks of asthma hospitalization to be 1.009 (95% CI 1.004-1.014) in 0-14 age group, and 1.015 (95% CI 1.008-1.022) in 65+ age group. Considering 10 ppb increase in $O_3$, those were 1.014 (95% CI 1.003-1.024) in 0-14 age group, and 1.025 (95% CI 1.009-1.041) in 65+ age group. It was concluded that current levels of ambient air pollution in Seoul make a significant contribution to the variation in daily asthma hospitalization. Further reduction in air pollution is necessary to protect the health of the community, especially that of the higher risky groups including children and elderly population.
Drop size distribution of an air-assisted fuel injector(AAFI) was investigated. Influence of parameters such as ambient air density supply pressure and air-liquid mass ratio(ALR) was examined through both measurement and analysis. The Sauter mean diameter$D_{32}$ varied from 9 to 25$\mu$m throughout all experimental conditions. An empirical correlation for droplet size was obtained. Analytical correlations for predicting $D_{32}$ with respect to operating conditions were also derived through energy consideration and introduction of a simplified model of the from the empirical fitting was adapted to the original equation the proposed correlation in this study matched more closely with measured results. The current correlation exhibited a favorable study matched more closely with measured results. The current correlation exhibited a favorable prediction for $D_{32}$ compared to that by the empirical correlation at selected experimental conditions so that it may be used to predict atomization performance of the AAFI at operating conditions which was not covered in the measurements. After validation the analytical equation was applied to survey the feasible operating conditions for gasoline direct injection application.
Background: Recently, there has been increasing worldwide concern about outdoor air pollution, especially particulate matter (PM), which has been extensively researched for its harmful effects on the respiratory system. However, sufficient research on its effects on cardiovascular diseases, such as hypertension, remains lacking. In this study, we examine the associations between PM levels and hypertension and hypothesize that higher PM concentrations are associated with elevated blood pressure. Methods: A total of 133,935 adults aged ≥ 40 years who participated in the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study were analyzed. Multiple linear regression analyses were conducted to investigate the short- (1-14 days), medium- (1 and 3 months), and long-term (1 and 2 years) impacts of PM on blood pressure. Logistic regression analyses were conducted to evaluate the medium- and long-term effects of PM on blood pressure elevation after adjusting for sex, age, body mass index, health-related lifestyle behaviors, and geographic areas. Results: Using multiple linear regression analyses, both crude and adjusted models generated positive estimates, indicating an association with increased blood pressure, with all results being statistically significant, with the exception of PM levels over the long-term period (1 and 2 years) in non-hypertensive participants. In the logistic regression analyses on non-hypertensive participants, moderate PM10 (particulate matter with diameters < 10 ㎛) and PM2.5 (particulate matter with diameters < 2.5 ㎛) levels over the long-term period and all high PM10 and PM2.5 levels were statistically significant after adjusting for various covariates. Notably, high PM2.5 levels of the 1 year exhibited the highest odds ratio of 1.23 (95% confidence interval: 1.19-1.28) after adjustment. Conclusions: These findings suggest that both short- and long-term exposure to PM is associated with blood pressure elevation.
