Raney nickel was used as catalyst in the hydrogen electrode for an alkaline fuel cell. The hydrogen electrode manufactured with the Raney nickel catalyst which was sintered at $700^{\circ}C$ was found to have the highest electrode performance. Using the Raney nickel powder of average particle size $90{\AA}$ for the electrode, the current density which had been measured was $450mA/cm^2$ at $80^{\circ}C$ using 6N KOH solution as an electrolyte. The effects of PTFE addition were investigated with CO-chemisorption, polarization curves and Tafel slope. CO-chemisorption had shown the optimum value when the Raney nickel was mixed with 5wt% of PTFE, but from the current density and Tafel slope at porous Raney nickel electrode, the appropriate value of PTFE addition was 10wt%. Recommendable Ni and Al portion for Raney nickel was 60 : 40 and loading amount was $0.25g/cm^2$. Also the influence of pressing pressure for manufacturing catalytic layer and for junction with gas diffusion layer was examined. The morphology of catalyst surface was investigated with SEM. The influence of reactivation time and heat-treatment temperature were also studied.

The recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs) from the leach solution of spent auto-catalyst and the wash solution of the leach residue was investigated in the laboratory scale experiments by the cementation process using metal powders as the reductant. In this study, the effect of Al, Mg and Zn powders on the cementation process was particularly examined. Aluminum powder was selected as the most suitable reductant for the cementation of PGMs. At the cementation time of 10 minute under the aluminium stoichimetric amount of 19.3 and the reaction temperature of $50{\sim}60^{\circ}C$, the recovery of platinum group metals from the leach solution of the spent auto-catalyst was found to be 99.3%, 99.4%, 90.2% for Pt, Pd and Rh, respectively. Under the same conditions with the aluminium stoichimetric amount of 45, the recovery of platinum group metals from the wash solution of the leach residue of spent catalyst was observed to be 97%, 97% and 90% for Pt, Pd and Rh, respectively. In addition, it was possible to upgrade the platinum group metals in the precipitates obtained from the cementation process by about 10% through the removal of metal impurities by the nitric acid leaching at ambient temperature.

The purpose of this study is to recover valuable metals from spent batteries using a dry process. We focused on the effect of the smelting temperature on the composition of recovered solid and liquid products and collected gaseous products. After removal of the cover, the spent battery was left in NaCl solution and discharged. Then, the spent battery was made into a powder form through a crushing process. The smelting of the spent battery was performed in a tubular electric furnace in an oxygen atmosphere. For spent lithium-ion batteries, the recovery yield of the solid product was 80.1 wt% at a reaction temperature of 850 ℃, and the final product had 27.2 wt% of cobalt as well as other metals such as lithium, copper, and aluminum. Spent nickel-hydrogen batteries had a recovery yield of 99.2 wt% at a reaction temperature of 850 ℃ with about 37.6 wt% of nickel and other metals including iron. For spent nickel-cadmium batteries, the yield decreased to 65.4 wt% because of evaporation with increasing temperature. At 1050 ℃, the recovered metals were nickel (41 wt%) and cadmium (12.9 wt%). Benzene and toluene, which were not detected with the other secondary waste batteries, were detected in the gaseous product. The results of this study can be used as basic data for future research on the dry recycling process of spent secondary batteries.
Black dross is a dark gray dross generated during the aluminum recycling process that uses flux, and contains NaCl, KCl, Al2O3, MgO, etc. Black dross is separated into soluble substances (NaCl, KCl) and insoluble substances (Al2O4, MgO) through the dissolution process. Soluble materials can be reused as salt flux, and Al2O3 and MgO can be upcycled to various ceramic materials through the synthesis process. In this study, Mayenite was synthesized using Al2O3 and MgO recovered from black dross, and the synthesis was performed according to the mixing ratio and reaction temperature. It was confirmed that when Mayenite was synthesized using black dross (spinel) and CaCO3, precursors were changed to Mg0.4Al2.4O4 and CaO at 700 ℃, and to Ca12Al14O33 (Mayenite) after 800 ℃. In the mixing conditions experiment, it was confirmed that the Mayenite XRD peak increased with increase of the CaCO3 content, and the Mg0.4Al2.4O4 XRD peak decreased. As a result of the BET analysis of the synthesized powder, the surface area decreased as the fine particles were grown and agglomerated in the process of generating mayenite.

In this study, the formation of $AlPO_4$-type porous materials from alum sludge was investigated. The materials were synthesized by the reaction of aluminum hydroxide and phosphoric acid with an organic template. Cationic surfactant, natural humic acid, and amino acids were used for the organic template. The residual organic templates were removed by calcination at $600^{\circ}C$ in the air. Powder X-ray diffraction patterns showed the charicteristic patterns of the $AlPO_4$-type porous materials. The morphology of the material was examined using a scanning electron microscopy. The coordination environment of $Al^{3+}$ ion was investigated by $^{27}Al$ MAS NMR technique. Both tetrahedrally and octahedrally coordinated$Al^{3+}$ ions were found in the as-synthesized samples while all $Al^{3+}$ ions were tetrahedrally coordinated in the calcined products. The development of mesopore in the solid material was confirmed by the measurement of BET specific surface area. Finally, they were used for removal of toxic formaldehyde from the air and the formaldehyde molecules were adsorbed on the surface of pores. In conclusion, $AlPO_4$-type porous materials from alum sludge might be applicable in the removal of toxic volatile organic compounds from the air.

Instant face lifting cosmetics contain various film forming agents for stretching the wrinkles on the skin surface. But, most of the film-forming polymers have sticky feels. And they are easily scrubbed out when skin is rubbed on. In this study, we focused on the influence of sodium silicate that has rapid film forming effect on skin surface and immediate wrinkle reducing effect. Sodium silicate, also known as water glass or soluble glass, is a compound containing sodium oxide and silica. Sodium silicate is a white powder that is readily soluble in water, producing an alkaline solution. Sodium silicate is stable in neutral and alkaline solutions. The sodium silicate solution hardens by drying in air and rapidly forms a thin film. When the solution is applied to the skin, the fine membrane coating is formed by water evaporation and ionic bond re-formation. It also makes the strong siloxane (Si-O) bonding on the skin surface. When these fixation properties are applied to cosmetics, they can give remarkable skin tightening effect. The sodium silicate solution can provide the lifting effect by forming a film on skin at a proper concentration. But, skin irritation may be caused with too high concentration of sodium silicate. We studied a desirable range of the sodium silicate concentration and combination with other fixatives for skin care formulation that has no sticky feels and no scrubbing out phenomenon. Immediate lifting gel was developed by using sodium silicate and various thickening systems. Among of the various thickeners, aluminum magnesium silicate showed the best compatibility with sodium silicate for rapid lifting effect. This instant physical lifting gel was confirmed as a low stimulating formula by skin clinical test.
Purpose: Resonance frequency analysis, Periotest, and removal torque (RT) test were known as the methods to assess implant stability. The results of these methods are affected by the bone condition, implant diameter and shape. The purpose of this study is to access the meaning and the correlationship of the resonance frequency analysis, Periotest and RT test in osseointegration simulated acrylic resin when the engaged bone thickness and peri-implant bone defect are changed. Materials and methods: To simulate osseointegration, the fixture was fixed to an aluminum mold with a screw. Acrylic resin powder and liquid were poured into the mold for polymerization. The engaged resin thickness with implant was controlled. Simulated cortical bone thicknesses were 1, 3, 5 and 10 mm. Additional 1, 3 and 5 mm peri-implant bone defects were simulated. Three types of implants were used; 4 mm diameter implants of straight shape, 4 mm diameter implants of tapered shape and 5 mm diameter implants of tapered shape. Five fixtures per each type were tested in respective bone condition. Resonance frequency analysis and Periotest were evaluated in all bone conditions. Peak removal torque was measured at simulated cortical bone thicknesses of 1 and 3 mm. The statistical analysis was performed with the Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Spearman test using a 95% level of confidence. Results: With increasing engaged bone depth, the Implant Stability Quotient (ISQ) values increased and the Periotest values (PTVs) decreased (P<.001, P<.001). With increasing peri-implant bone defect, ISQ values decreased and PTVs increased (P<.001). When the diameter of implant increased, ISQ values increased and Periotest values (PTV) decreased (P<.001). There was a strong correlation between ISQ values and PTVs (r = -0.99, P<.001). Furthermore, the peak removal torque values had weak correlations with both ISQ values and PTVs (r = 0.52, P<.001 ; r = -0.52, P<.001). Conclusion: This study confirmed favorable implant stability with increasing engaged bone depth and implant diameter and decreasing peri-implant bone defect. ISQ values and PTVs showed strong correlation with each other and not with the peak removal torque values.

Recently, the use of lightweight panels in building structures has been increasing. Of the various lightweight panel types, styrofoam sandwich panels are inexpensive and are excellent in terms of their insulation capacity and their constructability. However, sandwich panels that include organic material are quite vulnerable to fire, and thus can numerous casualties in the event of a fire due to the lack of time to vacate and their emission of poisonous gas. On the other hand, lightweight foamed concrete is excellent, both in terms of its insulation ability and its fire resistance, due to its Inner pores. The properties of lightweight concrete is influenced by foaming agent type. Accordingly, this study investigates the insulation properties by foaming agent type, to evaluate the possibility of using light-weight foamed concrete instead of styrene foam. Our research found thatnon-heating zone temperature of lightweight foamed concrete using AP (Aluminum Powder) and FP (animal protein foaming agent) are lower than that of light-weight foamed concrete using AES (alkyl ether lactic acid ester). Lightweight foamed concrete using AES and FP satisfied fire performance requirements of two hours at a foam ratio 50, 100. Lightweight foamed concrete using AP satisfied fire performance requirements of two hours at AP ratio 0.1, 0.15. The insulation properties were better in closed pore foamed concrete by made AP, FP than with open pore foamed concrete made using AES.

Nowadays there are many sun protection cosmetics including organic or inorganic UV filter as an active ingredient. Chemically stable inorganic sunsEreen agents, usually metal oxides, we widely employed in high SPF products. Titanium dioxide is one of the most frequently used inorganic UV filters. It has been used as pigments for a long period of cosmetic history. With the development of micronization techniques, it becomes possible to incorporate titanium dioxide in sunscreen formulations without whitening effect and it becomes an important research topic. However, there are very few works related to quantitations of titanium dioxide in sunscreen products. In this research, we analyzed amounts of titanium dioxide in sunscreen cosmetics by adapting redof titration, reduction of Ti(IV) to Ti(III) and reoxidation to Ti(IV). After calcification of other organic ingredients of cosmetics, titanium dioxide is dissolved by hot sulfuric acid. The dissolved Ti(IV) is reduced to the Ti(III) by adding aluminum metals. The reduced Ti(III) is titrated against a standard oxidizing agent, Fe(III) (ammonium iron(III) sulfate), with potassium thiocyanate as an indicator In order to test accuracy and applicability of the proposed method, we analyzed the amounts of titanium dioxide in four types of sunscreen cosmetics, such as cream, make-up base, foundation and powder, after adding known amounts of titanium dioxide $(1{\sim}25w/w%)$. The percent recoveries of the titanium dioxide in four types of formulations were in the range between 96 and 105%. We also analyzed 7 commercial cosmetic products labeled titanium dioxide as an ingredient and compared the results with those of obtained from ICP-AES (Inductively Coupled Plasma-Atomic Emission Spectrometry), one of the most powerful atomic analysis techniques. The results showed that the titrated amounts were well coincided with the analyzed amounts of titanium dioxide by ICP-AES. Although instrumental analytical methods, ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma-Mass Spectrometry) and ICP-AES, are the best for the analysis of titanium, it is hard to adopt because of their high prices for small cosmetic companies. It was found that the volumetric method presented here gat e quantitative and reliable results with routine lab-wares and chemicals.
