  • Aluminum alloy, Al5083-O, is one of candidate materials for the LNG storage tank, because of its excellent weldability, cryogenic characteristics, and corrosion resistance. The good weldability of Al5083-O is very important in LNG storage tank manufacturing. In this study, high current metal inert gas(MIG) welding process was used to get one pass welding of thick plate aluminum alloy. Bead on plate(BOP) welding was performed to evaluate the effect of welding conditions on the height of bead and depth of penetration. The optimum welding conditions were derived to get one pass welding of the thickness of 14.5mm. The mechanical properties of the welded joint were evaluated. The cross-sectional macro test, tensile test, and bending test satisfied the class rule.

  • A hybrid composite (APAL;Aramid Patched ALuminum alloy, CPAL;Carbon Patched ALluminum alloy), consisting of a Al 2024-T3 aluminum alloy plate sandwiched between two aramid/epoxy and carbon/epoxy laminate, was developed. Fatigue crack growth behavior was examined at stress ratios of R=0.2, 0.5. The APAL and CPAL showed superior fatigue crack growth resistance, which may be attributed to the crack bridging effect imposed by the intact fibers in the crack wake.

  • A hybrid composite APAL(Aramid Patched Aluminum alloy) , consisting of Al 2024-T3 aluminum alloy plate sandwiched between two aramid/epoxy laminates, was developed. The characteristics of tensile s trength were investigated and statistical properties of tensile strength were studied in terms of Weibull distribution probability with number of AFRP laminates. The tensile strength of APAL was inproportional to number of AFRP laminates and followed the two-parametic Weibull distribution.

  • The aim of the present study was to improve the radiative heat dissipation of aluminum alloy, Al 1050. Resin/CuO coating and Cu/CuO composite plating were applied on aluminum alloy to improve the radiative heat dissipation. Resin/CuO coating was made using thermosetting silicon resin and Cu/CuO composite plating was made in pyrophosphate copper plating bath. Radiant heat flux($W/m^2$) was measured by self-produced radiant heat measurement device to compare each specimen. The cross section of specimen and chemical bonding of surface were analyzed by FE-SEM, XPS and FT-IR. As a result, radiant heat of Resin/CuO coating was higher than Cu/CuO composite plating due to the adhesion with aluminum plate and the difference in chemical bonding. But, Both of them were higher than aluminum alloy. In order to confirm the result of experiment, aluminum plate, Resin/CuO coating and Cu/CuO composite plating sample were applied LED and measured the LED temperature. As a result, LED temperature of samples were matched previous results and confirmed coated samples were lower about 10 degrees than the aluminum alloy.

  • This paper shows the possibility of performing Lap joint using the friction stir welding with $2mm^t$ aluminum alloy plate and the determination of tool-dimensions for FSW in milling machine. This research also is reported on obtaining the tensile-shear strength, 91.3 (MPa) and the energy absorption, 26.3 (J) for Lap jointed specimen. The optimal tool-dimensions and method for Lap joint using FSW is as follows; each diameter of shoulder and pin is $9\phi(mm) and 3\phi(mm)$, the length of pin is 3.6(mm), Pressing the shoulder of tool into original base metal is not reasonable.

  • The article aims to apply a friction stir spot welding for producing the lap joint between AA5052 aluminum alloy and C11000 copper alloy. The dimension of the materials was 100 mm in length, 30 mm in width and 1.0 mm in thickness. The copper plate was set overlap the aluminum plate by 30 mm. The welding parameter was the rotating speed of 2500-4000 rpm, the pin inserting rate of 2-8 mm/min and the holding time of 6 sec. The mechanical properties test and the microstructure investigation were performed to evaluate the lap joint quality. The summarized results are as follows. The friction stir spot welding could produce effectively the lap joint between AA5052 and C11000 copper. Increase of the rotating speed and holding time directly affected to decrease the tensile shear strength of the lap joint. The optimized welding parameters in this study that indicated the tensile shear strength of 864 N was the rotating speed of 3500 rpm, the pin inserting rate of 6 mm/min and the holding time of 4sec. The experimental results also showed that the hardness of the weld metal was lower than that of the base materials.

  • APAL (Aramid Patched ALuminum alloy) was manufactured, which was a material that was consisting of a A12024-T3 aluminum alloy plate bonded to single-side of it with aramid/epoxy laminates. The aramid/epoxy laminates were bonded to it in condition of 1, 2 ply and fiber orientation of .+-.45, 0.deg./90.deg. Fatigue crack propagation tests were performed at stress ratio R-0.2, 0.5 with Al 2024-T3, APAL 45-1P, APAL 0/90-1P, APAL 45-2P, APAL 0/90-2P specimens to examine behavior of retardation in fatigue crack propagation. All the APAL specimens showed superior fatigue crack resistance. Number of cycle spended for crack to propagate from $a_{M}$=37 to $a_{M}$=65 mm in case of APAL 0/90-2P specimen was half that of Al 2024-T3 specimen. Fatigue crack propagation rate of APAL 0/90 specimens were retarded more compared to APAL 45 specimens and the amounts of retardation at R=0.5 were larger than that at R=0.2. It was found that the retardation in fatigue crack propagation was caused by intact fibers in the wake of crack.ack.

  • Conventionally, Al-Sn bearing manufacturing involves casting the Al-Sn alloy and roll-bonding to a steel backing strip. This article will describe the microstructural control of Al-Sn metal bearing alloy following heat treatment. When the pure aluminum rod dipped in the melt of tin maintained below the melting point of aluminum, the melting of aluminum was accelerated with penetration of tin along the grain boundary of aluminum. The length of plate-shaped eutectic tin was decreased with heat treatment time. With even longer heat treatment time over 1 hour the length of eutectic tin didn't decrease any more, while resulting in coarsening of aluminum matrix. Exuded liquid of eutectic tin was formed at the surface of Al-Sn alloy after heat treatment even at below eutectic temperature.

  • The weight of the bipolar plate is one of the crucial aspects of improving power density in PEMFC stacks. Aluminum alloys have good mechanical properties such as density, electrical resistivity, and thermal conductivity. Furthermore, using aluminum in a bipolar plate instead of graphite reduces the bipolar plate cost and makes machining easier. Therefore in this study, an aluminum alloy was selected as the appropriate material for a bipolar plate. Results from feasibility experiments with the aim of developing fuel cells consisting of Al bipolar plates with multiple channels are presented. Dynamic loading was applied and the formability of micro channels was estimated as a function of punch pressure and die radius. Sheets of Al5052 with a thickness of 0.3mm were used. For a die radius of 0.1mm the formability was optimized with a sine wave dynamic load of 90kN at maximum pressure and 5 cycles of a sine wave punch travel. The experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed manufacturing technique for producing bipolar plates.
