  • Rapid set accelerators are widely used in tunnel construction, however quality criteria of and dosage are not well established. The density and solid content of admixtures, setting time and compressive strength of paste and mortar with admixtures were investigated to establish the quality criteria. While the early strength of mortar with sodium-silicate, sodium-aluminate and calcium aluminate type admixtures that have high alkali content are very high, but long-term strength are low. Aggregates of shotcrete has to be carefully selected. Sodium-silicate type admixture need longer setting time than the others.

  • This study investigated the strength of shotcrete with aluminate accelerator to connect with the proper repair methods or monitoring skills in subway, cable tunnel and underground storage. In order to approach these goals, the shotcrete specimens were exposed to acid, sulfate and seawater environments, and strength properties of the shotcrete suffering from the attacking sources were examined.

  • We present the numerical implementation, simulation, and validation of the high-velocity impact experiments that have been described in the companion article. In this part, numerical investigations and simulations performed to mimic the tests are presented. The experiments were analyzed by the explicit integration-based software ABAQUS for improved simulations. Targets were modeled with a damaged plasticity model for concrete. Computational results of residual velocity and crater dimensions yielded acceptable results.

  • Zeolite A was prepared from coal fly ash upon NaOH fusion treatment, followed by hydrothermal treatment. The effects of treatment conditions such as NaOH/ash ratio, fusion temperature, the amount of sodium aluminate added, hydrothermal treatment temperature and time on the type and the crystallinity of zeolites were investigated. The optimal NaOH/ash weight ratio and fusion temperature to produce high crystalline zeolite A were 1.2 and $550^{\circ}C$, respectively. The dissolution of $Si^{4+}$ and $Al^{3+}$ from the fused fly ash was not affected by stirring time. The type of synthetic zeolites was found to be dependent on the amount of sodium aluminate added. The low amount of sodium aluminate favored zeolite X, while a single phase zeolite A was produced by increasing the amount sodium aluminate. Zeolite A was transformed into hydroxysodalite with increasing hydrothermal treatment time and temperature. A high crystalline zeolite A could be obtained by decreasing the temperature increasing time up to the reaction temperature.

  • Current study was undertaken to explain the structural evolution and corresponding changes in the properties of calcium aluminate glasses with the variation of SiO2 doping concentration. Calcium aluminate glasses in the compositional ranges of (100-x)(0.6CaO+0.4Al2O3)+xSiO2(where x=0~60) were fabricated. DTA analysis confirmed an anomalous behavior in glass transition temperature (Tg) with the maximum of 887$^{\circ}C$ and minimum of 859$^{\circ}C$ when x=5 and 50, respectively. densities and refractive indices monotonically decreased with increasing SiO2 content and IR transmitting cutoff shifted to shorter wavelength side when the amount of added SiO2 exceeded 5 mole%. IR fundamental vibration absorption peaks showed the change that NBOs were inclined to SiO4 tetrahedron in the low-silica region and NBO per SiO4 tetrahedra changed from 2 to 0 with increasing silica content. Based on the analysis of IR fundamental vibration absorption peaks, the model of the structural change can be proposed in three step: 1) SiO4 scavenged the NBOs located at AlO4-tetrahedra, which resulted in the increased of Tg values, 2) NBOs located in the main network again with a decrease in Tg, and 3) dominated by the decrease in the relative amount of NBOs in the glass system, where Tg re-increased.

  • Soft-solution route employing PVA(Polyvinyl Alcohol) as a polymeric carrier in a mixed metal cation solution was used for synthesis of single-phase nickel aluminate (NiA1$_2$O$_4$) powders. The PVA ensured the homogeneous distribution of metal ions in the solution and it resulted in the decrease of crystallization temperature. The synthesized powders prepared by PVA addition were soft and ball-milled easily. The ball-milled powders of about 300 nm in size were fully densified to density of 4.35 g/㎤ at 1600$^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The Vickers hardness, flexural strength, fracture toughness and thermal expansion coefficient of the sintered nickel aluminate were 14.2 ㎬, 304 ㎫, 4.8 ㎫$.$m$\^$1/2/ and 9.8${\times}$10$\^$-6//$^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • In order to examine the possibility of practical use of aluminate cement concrete at low-temperature environment with insulation method, an experimental studies on flowability, setting time, freezing temperature, size variation and compressive strength of the mortar at low-temperature were conducted. Compressive strength was increased in use of CSA, aluminate cement with gypsum. Workability and physical properties were improved by using aluminate cement and gypsum. In addition, freezing resistance and physical properties were improved by applying the insulation curing method. Especially, when alumina cement and gypsum were used together, the insulation curing method was more effective in improving the compressive strength.

  • In this study, some engineering properties of OPC and GGBFS shotcrete mortars with alkali-free or aluminate accelerator were experimentally examined. As a result, GGBFS mortars with alkali-free accelerator were significantly similar to OPC mortars with same accelerator with respect to both setting time and compressive strength. Comparatively, GGBFS mortars with aluminate accelerator showed a good performance with an increased replacement of GGBFS. Furthermore, when replaced with GGBFS over 50%, the mortars exhibited superior performances of electrical resistivity and chloride ions penetration resistance. Accordingly, it is suggested that GGBFS has a beneficial effect as shotcreting materials in the condition of proper replacement levels.

  • Shotcrete concrete is generally used in the form of ready-mixed concrete products using type I ordinary portland cement(hereinafter referred to as OPC) and about 5% of accelerator mixed separately in the field. In this study, we tested the effect of OPC fineness and SO3 content on a penetration resistance, compressive strength of binder for shotcrete using calcium aluminate type accerlerator. And we analysed hydrates and pore structure effects on mortar performance. In the future, it is expected to be useful for manufacturing optimized OPC as a binder for shotcrete.
