Several oxide (ZrO2, Al2TiO5, reactive Al2O3) and nonoxide (SiC, Si3N4, "ALON" (5AlN.9Al2O3)) additives were used as a microfiller for alumina based LCC (Low-Cement-Castable). High temperature prooperties (HMOR, softening under load) and the phase changes of developed LCC on various sintering temperatures were examined. In addition, thermal shock test and corrosion test were accomplished. Based on these data the effects of each microfiller on the properties of LCC were established comparing to those of the commercial LCC with amorphous silica as a microfiller. The castables, containing reactive alumina, ZrO2 and "ALON" (5AlN.9Al2O3) as a first portion, exhibited considerably higher HMOR-values over 100$0^{\circ}C$, better creep behavior, and thermal shock resistance than those of castables with amorphous silica. The LCC with 5% Al2TiO5 showed no corrosion against molten aluminum.nst molten aluminum.
Aluminum sec-butoxide was synthesized from aluminum foil and alcohol. The characteristics of the alumina powder prepared from the synthesized alkoxide by the Yoldas method were studied. As a result of measuring the synthesized aluminum sec-butoxide by GC, the purity of the synthesized alkoxide was 98.7% on the basis of commercial alkoxide and the yield was 78.5%. A127-MASNMR analysis shows that powders dried at 9$0^{\circ}C$ and $\alpha$-Al2O3 have 6-cordinated structure and ${\gamma}$-Al2O3 has 4-coordinated structure. The characteristics of alumina powder prepared from the synthisized alkoxide showed the same characteristics with the alumina powder prepared from the commercial alkoxide.
Alumina composites reinforced with SiC whiskers only or combinded with TiC particles were prepared by hot-pressing at 1850$^{\circ}C$ for 1h. The mechanical properties and microstructures of composites were investigated in this study. By of addition either 20 vol% SiC whiskers or 20 vol% TiC particles, the flexural strength fo alumina was increased from 360 MPa to 650 MPa or 730 MPa, respectively, and the KIC was also increased from 3.5 MPa$.$m1/2 to 5.5MPa$.$m1/2 or 4.4MPa$.$m1/2, respectively. In the case of composites with 20 vol% SiC whiskers and 2 vol% TiC particles. The flexural strength and KIC showed relatively high value of 800 MPa and 5.3MPa$.$m1/2, respectively. The improvement of mechanical properties was considered to be due to both the smaller average grain size and the crack deflection.
The biaxial fracture behavior of alumina ceramics was studied using ball-on-3-ball test. The polished surfaces of alumina specimens were indented at 0mm, 1mm, 2mm, 3mm apart from the center of the specimen along path A, passing between the two supporting balls from the center of the specimen, and along path B, passing above the three supporting balls from the center of the specimen. The fracture strength of the indented specimens was measured using the ball-on-3-ball test, a kind of biaxial strength test. The fracture strength increased with increasing the distance from the center to indented position. The fracture strength of the specimen indented along path B was higher than that of the specimens indented along path A. It was presented that the fracture caused by tangential stress rather than radial stress when the indented positions are 1mm and 2mm from the center of the specimen. This phenomenon was in good agreement with FEM analysis.
The tungsten paste was printed on the surface of 92% alumina sheet which was made by type casting process. The printed tungsten was bonded on the Al2O3 by co-firing in reducing atmosphere. During the co-firing, the binder burn-out was easier in wet H2 atmosphere than in dry H2, which affected sintered density. In practically, the use of wet H2 above 100$0^{\circ}C$ was beneficial for density of alumina and bond strength. This phenomena occured more distinctly when atmosphere varied from dry H2 to wet H2 than varied dew point in wet H2. In wet H2, the improvement in bonding strength can be attributed to good glass migration into the metal layer due to inhibition of the tungsten particle growth, with increase of alumina density, at the temperatrue higher than 100$0^{\circ}C$.

A ball-shape alumina arc-tube for low-wattage lamp was developed by the PIM process. An ultra high purity translucentgrade alumina powder was used. In injection molding process, a hot-runner type mold was developed. The translucent-grade alumina powder was extremely sensitive to contamination so that the injection molding condition and atmosphere control in the furnace should be taken care of with extreme caution. Contamination sources were pinpointed with EPMA. The arc-tube was molded in half and two halves were bonded in the middle by a new bonding technique at room temperature developed in this study.
Dispersant was used to avoid the agglomeration of aluminum hydrate precipitate and improve the sinterability of calcined alumina powder. The mean particle size of the aluminum hydrate precipitates was 0.26${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 0.44${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ when ball-milled with and without dispersant, respectively. After calcination at 110$0^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours, the size of the alumina powder without dispersant increased to 0.84${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$, while with dispersant slightly decreased to 0.22${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. The most thermally active alumina powder was obtained from the sample calcined at 110$0^{\circ}C$ for 5 hours with the 1% dispersant concentration. Using the calcined alumina powder at the above optimized condition, the specimen showed fired density of 3.94g/㎤, 4-point MOR of 364MPa, and KIC of 3.26MPam1/2 after sintered at 155$0^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours.
In nowdays many dental CAD/CAM system were developed. Among those only Cerec and Celay were used globally as clinical application. Celay is a machinable ceramic system that is capable of milling inlays, onlays, and veneers from prefabricated industrial ceramic blocks(Vita Celay Blanks). The advatages of Celay are to simplify the manufactures and to save the processing time. For esthetics In-Ceram Alumina bridges were introduced into maxillary anterior restoration. They have a high strength, a high translucency and an excellent marginal adapation. But the laboratory processes are very difficult and complicated. So the construction of In-Ceram Alumina bridge combined with celay system was desgined. The patient is a 28 year old age male. The chief complain is missing of maxillary left central incisor. He wants to restore anterior bridge for esthetically. The Alumina bridge framework was constructed easily by celay system. Glass ilfiltration was occurred. After that, vitadura-${\alpha}$porcelain build up was occurred by conventional method. The translucency of In-Ceram Alumina 3 unit bridge revealed to be superior to that of porcelain fused to metal bridge. So we report it with clincal case and literature reviews.
Recently, the use of high-tech ceramic parts in functional electronic parts, automobile parts and semiconductor equipment parts is increasing. These ceramics materials are required to have high reproducibility, reliability, large size and complex shapes. The researchers initiated the work to develop a new shaping method called gel casting, which allows high performance ceramic materials with a complex shape to be produced. The manufacturing process parameters of gel casting include uniform mixing of the initiator, bubble removal, and slip injection. In this study, we analyzed the dispersion and gelation characteristics according to the change in the additive content of the alumina slurry in the gel casting process. The alumina slurry for gel casting was prepared by mixing a solvent, a monomer and a dispersant through a ball mill. Alumina powder and a gelation initiator were added to the mixed solution, and ball milling was performed for 24 hours. A viscosity of 6,435 cps and a stable zeta potential value were obtained under the conditions of alumina powder content of 55 vol% and dispersant 2.0 wt%. After curing for 12 hours by adding aps 0.1wt%, TEMED 0.2wt%, and Monomer 3, 5wt%, it was possible to separate from the molding cup, confirming that the gelation was completed.
