Neat Epoxy, nano alumina composites, micro alumina composites and multi-nano alumina composites were prepared and experiment were performed to measure their partial discharge resistant characteristics. The partial discharge resistance obtained for the microcomposites, nanocomposites and multi-nanocomposites are compared with those of unfilled epoxy and with GDE amount for surface modifier. It was observed that compare multi-nano alumina composites to micro alumina composites, the partial discharge resistance to degradation gets improved considerably. The improvement in the degradation resistance is attributed to the interface intension between the nano alumina composites and GDE, micro alumina and epoxy neat.
The phase transformation temperature from $\theta$- to $\alpha$-alumina was lowered from 1214$^{\circ}C$ to 114$0^{\circ}C$ in DSC by treating ${\gamma}$-alumina obtained by calcination of boehmite at $700^{\circ}C$ for 2hrswith $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeds (d50=0.36${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and 3wt% of the alumina sol. $\alpha$-Al2O3 seeds seemed to lower to the transformation temperature and the alumina sol suppressed the high temperature agglormeration. The effect was increased as the amount of the sol was increased, which was supported by TEM and particle size distribution. For an example, spherical ${\gamma}$-alumina powder with d50=0.54${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ was prepared by treating the ${\gamma}$-alumina with 9 wt% of the alumina sol and 3wt% of the $\alpha$-Al2O3. It sintered to 99% of the theoretical density at 150$0^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs. and it had relatively homogeneous microstructure with 2~3${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ sized grains.
Activated alumina was fabricated with aluminum hydroxide in this study. High-purity alumina gel and boehmite were prepared from aluminum hydroxide by a hydrothermal process and fired to activate alumina having a surface area of 380 ~ 480 $m^2/g$ with less loss of ignition. The aging and drying condition during the fabrication process affected the loss of ignition, the sedimentation time of the alumina suspension, as well as the surface area of the activated alumina. For pellet-type activated alumina, the pre-fired alumina gel and boehmite were press-formed and fired at $400^{\circ}C$ and $550^{\circ}C$ for 6 h, respectively. The fired pellets showed a low density of 2.0 ~ 2.2 $g/cm^3$ with 20% firing shrinkage and sufficient handling strength. In this study, a new fabrication process for high-quality activated alumina with aluminum hydroxide is introduced. The effects of the processing parameters on the activated alumina properties are also examined.
This study investigated the effect of filler particle size and weight% on mechanical properties of dental core porcelain. In alumina, variation in particle size and weight% and in zirconia, variation in weight%, all specimens were tested three-point bending strength, transmittance, thermal expansion coefficient, porosity and shrinkage and observed with SEM and analysed with X-ray diffractometer. In order to develop shrink-free porcelain, after firing alumina only, glass wasinfiltrated. And aluminum was added to alumina with the expanding character of aluminum oxidize into alumina, and was followed by second firing of glass infiltration procedure. Then mechanical properties were observed. The results of this study were obtained as follows. 1. The bending strength of zirconia was higher than that of alumina, and $5{\mu}m$ alumina had highest strength in variation of particle size of alumina. Except for $5{\mu}m$ alumina, increased with weight%, bending strength increased up to 80% and decreased at 90%. In case of glass infiltration, bending strength was slight higher than 80% and 90% of $5{\mu}m$ alumina. 2. Transmittance increased with increase of shrinkage, decrease of porosity, and with increase of filler size and had no direct correlation with weight%. 3. Thermal expansion coefficient of alumina group was $7.42\sim8.64\times10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ and that of zirconia group was $9.83\sim12.11\times10^{-6}/^{\circ}C$ and the latter was higher than the former. 4. In x-ray diffraction analysis, alumina group and zirconia group increased $Al_2O_3$ peak and $t-ZrO_2$ peak with increase of weight%. The second phase(cristobalite peak) was observed in zirconia 40% group. 5. Porosity of zirconia was lower than that of alumina and $5{\mu}m$ alumina group had many pores with SEM. In case of low filler content, fracture occurred in glass and high filler content, in glass and filler. In case of aluminum addition to alumina, small oxidised aluminum was observed. 6. Zirconia group had high shrinkage than alumina group, and mixed group of alumina group had high shrinkage. In case of glass infiltration, shrinkage decreased and aluminum addition to alumina group was almost shrink-free.
Alumina powders were dispersed using crosslinkable organic molecules by electrosteric stabilization and then consolidated by crosslinking of organic molecules. The effect of processing variables such as the physicochemical properties of both solvent media and organic molecules, the proportions of mixed organic media, etc. were studied. FT-IR was used todeduce the mechanism of organic molecules adsorption on the alumina particle surfaces. The adsorption characteristics and the electrokinetic behavior of alumina suspensions were correlated with the stability of particle in alumina suspension using rheological measurements. The green body of alumina consolidated by the chemical crosslinking of the adsorbed organic molecules after the alumina suspension had been stabilized was tough enough for green machining and the sintered alumina fabricated by this proposed process also showed a high bending strength and a homogeneous microstructure.
Porous alumina ceramics were fabricated by pseudo-boehmite phydosol-gel process within/without commercial $\alpha$-alumina particles average 1 and 40 micron respectively. The pore characteristics of fired specimens were studied by the measurement of bulk density total porosity thyermal analysis pore volume pore distribution BET area XRD and SEM. with increasing of firing temperature pore volume and BET surface area were decreased and the average pore size was increased to approximately 146$\AA$ upto 80$0^{\circ}C$ by de-watering of [OH] and formation of $\alpha$-alumina. The fired relative density of the alumina-dispersed specimen with average 1 micron particle was increased with the amounts of dispersed particle by bimodal packing theory which is compared to the ones of specimen including of average 40 micron particle. It was confirmed that the percola-tion threshold in porous ceramics with coarser particle (40 micron) has formed between the transformed-alumina from hydrogel and dispersed-alumina of above 50 vol% particle and the total porosity was increased at the threshold point above.
To prepare the alumina cement free vibrated alumina castable, $\rho$-alumina is employed as a binder material, and nano-sized clay is added to enhance the curing strength and give thixotropic behavior. The rheological behavior of matrix of castable is controlled by investigating the influences of ultrafines, $\rho$-alumina, and nano-sized clay on the viscosity of matrix. The microsilica and ultrafine alumina were added 3 wt% and 4 wt%, respectively to the matrix, which showed that the viscosities tends to be lowest values. The rheological property of the matrix is well established by adding $\rho$-alumina as 8 wt% and clay as 4 wt%. The thixotropic behavior of the $\rho$-alumina bonded castable was appeared by introducing nano-sized clay into the matrix and adjusting the pH near to the PZC of the clay suspension.

For an application as templates of high performance with proper pore size and shape, porous anodic alumina films were prepared by anodization in oxalic acid, and formation behaviors of anodic alumina layer as well as dissolution process in acid solution have been investigated. The surface characteristics on anodic alumina layer were shown to be dependent on the fabrication parameters for anodization. For the dissolution behaviors of anodic alumina, the thickness of the barrier-type alumina layer decreased linearly with the rate of 0.98 nm/min in $H_3PO_4$ solution at $30^{\circ}C$. The changes of the anodic alumina layers were analyzed by SEM and TEM.
The size of various alumina ceramics used in semiconductor and display industry is also required to increase with increase in wafer and panel size. In this research, large alumina ceramics was fabricated by filter pressing of alumina slurry using commercial powder and thereafter sintering at $1600^{\circ}C$ in gas furnace. The characteristics of large alumina ceramics thereby were compared to those of small alumina ceramics prepared by pressure forming such as uniaxial pressing and CIP. Careful control of properties of alumina slurry and filter pressing made the fabrication of large alumina ceramics possible, and its characteristics were equivalent to those of small alumina ceramics. The large alumina ceramics, prepared by sintering the green body of 63% relative density at $1600^{\circ}C$, exhibited both dense microstructure corresponding to 98.5% of relative density and 99.8% of high purity as in starting powder.
In this research, dilute colloidal suspension alumina nanofluids were prepared by dispersing alumina nanoparticles in DI water and ethylene glycol as base fluids. Particle size analyzer and TEM test results revealed that the size of the alumina nanofluids(3wt% and 5wt%) with dispersion time 3hrs were 46nm and 60nm respectively. Thermal conductivity of these alumina nanofluids was measured by means of hot wire technique using a LAMBDA system. For water based alumina nanofluids, thermal conductivity enhancement was from 2.29% to 3.06% with 5wt% alumina at temperatures ranging from 15 to $40^{\circ}C$. Whereas in case of ethylene glycol based alumina nanofluids under the same temperature range, thermal conductivity enhancement was from 9.6% to 10% with 5wt% alumina. An enhancement of 37% average convective heat transfer was achieved with 5wt% alumina nanofluids at Re of 1,100.
