The objective of this study is to present flow and pressure drop characteristics of R22 in adiabatic capillary tubes of inner diameters of 1.2 to 2.0mm, and tube lengths of 500 to 2000mm. Distributions of temperature and pressure along capillary tubes and the refrigerant flow rates through the tubes were measured for several condensing temperatures and various degrees of subcooling at the capillary tube inlet. Condensing temperatures of R22 were selected as 40, 45, and 50$^{\circ}C$ at the capillary tube inlet, and the degree of subcooling was adjusted to 1 to 18$^{\circ}C$. Experimental results including mass flow rates and pressure drops of R22 in capillary tubes were provided. A new correlation based on Buckingham II theorem to predict the mass flow rate through the capillary tube was presented considering major parameters which affect the flow and pressure drop characteristcis.
The performance of adiabatic capillary tubes are measured to provide the database for a generalized correlation. Test conditions and capillary tube geometries are selected to cover a wide range typically observed in air-conditioning and heat pump applications. Based on extensive experimental data for R22, R290, and R407C measured in this study, a generalized correlation for refrigerant flow rate in adiabatic capillary tubes is developed by implementing dimensionless parameters for tube inlet conditions, capillary tube geometry, and refrigerant properties. The correlation yields good agreement with the present data for R22, R290, and R407C with average and standard deviations of 0.9% and 5.0%, respectively. In addition, approximately 97% of the data for Rl2, R134a, R152a, R410A, and R600a obtained in the open literature are correlated within a relative deviation of $\pm$ 15%.
A centrifugal water chiller using alternative refrigerant R134a have been developed. The prototype was designed to have refrigeration capacity of 300RT. Its compressor employs a single high-speed impeller, airfoil diffuser and collector. Newly developed enhanced tubes were installed in the evaporator and the condenser to reduce the required head for the compressor. Off-design characteristics at various conditions, performance test of the compressor and analysis of the refrigeration cycle were performed. So the probability of use in part load condition was checked and the direction for revision was suggested.
An experimental investigation on the two-phase flow through tube orifices was performed with the refrigerant mixture of R32/125/134a(30/10/60). A series of tests were conducted to generate wide range of data at varying operation conditions with four short tubes. The tests include both single and two-phase flow conditions at the inlet of the short tube with different oil concentrations. Experimental data were presented as a function of major operating parameters and short tube diameter. Based on test results and data analysis, a semi-empirical flow model was developed to predict the mass flow rate through short tube orifices with a given set of conditions. The flow model was formed to cover both single and two-phase flow at the inlet of short tube with considering the effects of oil concentration.
Nowadays HCFCs refrigerant are restricted because it cause depletion of ozone layer. However, natural gases such as ammonia as an organic compound, propane and propylene as hydrocarbon are easy and cheap to obtain as well as environmental. Accordingly, this experiment apply the $NH_3$ and R22 to study the performance characteristic from the superheat control and compare the energy efficiency of two refrigerants from the high performance. The condensing pressure of refrigeration system is increased from 15bar to 16bar and degree of superheat is increased from 0 to $10^{\circ}C$ at each condensing pressure. As the result of experiment, when comparing the each COP, we knew the $NH_3$ is suitable as the alternative refrigerant of the R22.
A small refrigeration system used in a water purifier was tested by employing propane/isobutane (R-290/R-6OOa) mixtures as an alternative refrigerant of R-12. The drop-in tests were performed by varying mass fraction of propane at 0.25, 0.5 and 0.75 with a change of both refrigerant charge amount and capillary tube length in order to find an optimum composition in aspect of performance and reliability of the system. As a result, the mixture of 50% propane-50% isobutane showed the best performance and reliability among them in a small refrigeration system. During steady state operations, both the COP and refrigeration capacity increased by 4% and 9%, respectively, as compared to the baseline R-12 system. In addition, the propane/isobutane (50/50) mixture system yielded advantages in the minimization of modification and redesigning of system components due to very similar saturation tempera- ture and pressure characteristics with R-12.
In order to replace CFC-502 which has been widely used in transportation and low temperature refrigeration system, performance tests using HFC-407A, HFC-404A and HFC-507 have been carried out. Measurements were conducted at two different condensing temperatures of $43.3^{\circ}C$and $54.5^{\circ}C$ for each refrigerant. System performance characteristics and heat transfer characteristics of each refrigerant were obtained at several compressor speeds and evaporating temperatures ranging from$-25^{\circ}C$ to $-10^{\circ}C$ Test results show that the use of tested alternative refrigerants without changing system components offers the potential performance improvement of a refrigeration system.
Thermodynamic performance of eight zeotropic R-22 alternative refrigerant mixtures selected by AREP(R-22 Alternative Refrigerants Evaluation Program) and R-32/R-125/R-134a(23%/25%/52%), namely R-407C were evaluated by the "drop-in" simulation method. An existing air conditioner was selected and its design data were used for the simulation. "ARI Test A" air conditions were applied. The degree of vapor superheat at the compressor inlet fixed at $5^{\circ}C$ for all the mixtures. The results of the simulation were compared with those of R-22. COPs of all mixtures except for R-32/R-227ea(35%/65%) and R-32/R-125/R-134a(10%/70%/20%), were higher than that of R-22 by 2%~8%, while the capacities were all lower than that of R-22 by 13%~27%. COP of R-32/R-134a(40%/60%) was 2.4% higher but the capacity was 15% lower than those of R-22. In the case of R-32/R-134a(30%/70%), COP and capacity were 5.5% higher and 15% lower than those of R-22, respectively. Among the ternary mixtures, R-407C and R-32/R-125/R-134a(30%/10%/60%) showed the best performance. COP of R-407C was 2.4% higher than those of R-22 but the capacity was 15% lower.
