  • The refrigeration cycle of automobile air-conditioners is simulated in an effort to provide a computational tool for optimum thermodynamic design. In the simulation, thermodynamic and heat transfer analysis was performed for the four major components : evaporator, condenser, compressor, and expansion valve. Effectiveness-NTU method was used for modeling both evaporator and condenser. The evaporator was divied into many subgrids and simultaneous cooling and dehumidifying analysis was performed for each grid to predict the performance accurately. Blance equations were used to model the compressor instead of using the compressor map. The performance of each component was checked against the measured data with CFC-12. Then, all the components were combined to yield the total system performance. Predicted cycle points were compared against the measured data with HFC-134a and the deviation was found to be less than 5% for all data. Finally, the system model was used to predict the performance of CFC-12 and HFC-134a for comparison. The results were very reasonable as compared to the trend deduced from the measured data.

  • The effects of casing shapes on the performance and the interaction between an impeller and a casing in a small-sized centrifugal compressor are investigated. Especially, numerical analyses are conducted for the centrifugal compressor with both a circular casing and a volute one. The optimum design for each element (i.e., impeller, diffuser and casing) is important to develop an efficient and compact compressor using alternative refrigerant as working fluids. Typical rotating speed of the compressor is in the range of 40,000∼45,000 rpm. The impeller has backswept blades due to tip clearance and a vane diffuser has wedge type. In order to predict the flow pattern inside an entire impeller, vaneless diffuser and casing, calculations with multiple frames of reference method between the rotating and stationery parts of the domain are carried out. For computations of compressible turbulent flow fields, the continuity and time-averaged Navier-Stokes equations are employed. To evaluate the performance of two types of casings, the static pressure recovery and loss coefficients are obtained for various flow rates. Also, static pressure distributions around casings are studied for different casing shapes, which are very important to predict the distribution of radial load. The static pressure around the casing and pressure difference between the inlet and outlet of the compressor are measured for the circular casing.

  • We developed a built-in sensor bearing to measure the rotor motion of a rolling piston type compressor for the air conditioner. Because of needs for the high efficiency and long life span of compressor, and the usage of alternative refrigerants, the operating condition of the compressor becomes more severe. The accurate measurement of the rotor motion of the compressor can contribute greatly to the design and analysis of the hydrodynamic bearing. However, it is difficult to measure accurately the shaft behavior of small compressor because of the small space for the sensor mount, high temperature and pressure of compressor, oil mixed with refrigerant, and electromagnetic noise of the motor. To overcome these difficulties, we develop the cylindrical capacitive sensor that is built in the hydrodynamic bearing and calibrate the built-in sensor bearing indirectly through measuring the oil relative permittivity. We measured the rotor motion as well as suction and discharge pressures in various conditions. The several experimental results show that the developed built-in sensor bearing can measure the rotor motion not only in steady state but also in transient state.

  • R-410a and R-407c witch have the best potential among the substances being considered as R-22 alternatives were tested as "drop in" refrigerants against a set R-22 baseline tests for comparison. The performance evaluations were carried out in a psychrometric calorimeter test facility using the residential split-type air conditioner under the ARI rating conditions. Other than the use of different lubricant and a hand-operated expansion valve, one of the commercial systems was selected for the experiment. Performance characteristics were measured; compressor power, capacity, VCR, mass flow rate and COP. The tests showed that R-407c can be directly applied to the existing refrigeration system because of its similar vapor pressure and other thermopysical properties with those of R-22. However, it required change to the volume flow rate of compressor in order to achieve the similar performance with R-22 because of its relatively small VCR and capacity. Meanwhile, R-410a has too high a vapor pressure to be applied to the existing system and this feature results in relatively low COP of the system compared to that of R-22. But this could be improved by changing compressor design considering R-410a's relatively high VCR and capacity compared to those of R-22.

  • Thermodynamic properties of alternatives for R12 and R22 were estimated and performances of refrigerating cycle using these refrigerants were compared. In this study, we adopt R134a, R22/R142b, R22/R152a, R22/R152a/R124 as alternatives for R12 and R32/R134a for R22. Thermodynamic properties of these refrigerants were estimated using modified CSD equation of state. Cycle simulations of the refrigerating system considering heat source were carried out in order to compare the performance of the system. R134a shows relatively lower COP than R12 but very similar VCR. R22/R142b(50/50 mass fraction), R22/R152a(10/90), R22/R152a/R124(30/25/45) are good for the substitutes of R12 and R32/R134a(30/70) is appropriate for that of R22 in view of COP and VCR.

  • A CANFLEX(CANdu FLEXible fuelling) 43-element bundle has developed for a CANDU-6 reactor as an alternative of 37-element fuel bundle. The design has two diameter elements (11.5 and 13.5㎜) to reduce maximum element power rating and buttons to enhance the critical heat flux(CHF), compared with the standard 37-element bundle. The freon CHF experiments have performed for two series of CANFLEX bundles with and without buttons with a modelling fluid as refrigerant H-l34a and axial uniform heat flux condition. Evaluating the effects of buttons of CANFLEX bundle on CHF and Critical Channel Power(CCP) with the experimental results, it is shown that the buttons enhance CCP as well as CHF. All the CHF's for both the CANFLEX bundles are occurred at the end of fuel channel with the high dryout quality conditions. The CHF enhancement ratio are increased with increase of dryout quality for all flow conditions and also with increase of mass flux only lot high pressure conditions. It indicates that the button is a useful design lot CANDU operating condition because most CHF flow conditions for CANDU fuel bundle are ranged to high dryout quality conditions.

  • R502 has been extensively used as a working fluid in transport refrigerating vehicles and low temperature refrigerating machines but is to be phased out by the end of 1995 due to ozone layer depletion problem. In this study, both theoretical cycle analysis and experiments were carried out to examine the best substitutes for R502. Theoretical results indicate that the alternatives available in the market today may replace R502 without significant changes in the system without suction line heat exchanger(SLHX). When the system contains a SLHX, however, COPs of the alternatives increase up to approximately 15~20% than those without the SLHX. But simultaneously, the discharge temperatures of the compressor also increrease significantly with the SLHX. Actual test results obtained from the experiment with a transport vehicle's refrigerator indicate the similar trend as those of the theoretical results. Especially, HFCs and their mixtures show lower discharge temperature than those of R502, which is one of the desirable features. Further research is needed to study the effect of the SLHX on the performance of the real machine as well as on the oil return for reliability of the system.

  • Because of the ozone layer depletion and global warming, new alternative refrigerants are being developed. In this study, evaporation heat transfer characteristics of carbon dioxide flowing upward in a vertical micro-fin tube have been investigated by experiment. Before a test section, a pre-heater is installed to adjust the inlet quality of the refrigerant to a desired value. The micro-fin tube with outer diameter of 5 mm and length of 1.44 m was selected as the test section. The test was conducted at mass fluxes of 318 to $530\;kg/m^2s$, saturation temperature of -5 to $5^{\circ}C$, and heat fluxes of 15 to $30\;kW/m^2$. As the vapor quality increases, the heat transfer coefficients of carbon dioxide are increased, and the heat transfer coefficients increase when the heat fluxes and saturation temperatures increase, and there was not much of influence of mass flux on the heat transfer coefficients.

  • The present study experimentally investigated the effect of refrigeration oil on the condensation heat transfer for R-407C and R-22 in a microfin tube with a U-bend. POE oil ($74.1\;\textrm{mm}^2/s,\;40^{\circ}C$,) and mineral oil $62.5\;\textrm{mm}^2/s,\;40^{\circ}C$,) were used for R-407C and R-22 respectively Experimental parameters were an oil concentration from 0 to 5%, a mass flux from 100 to $400kg/m^{2}s sand an inlet quality from 0.5 to 0.9. The enhancement factors for both R-22 and R-407C refrigerants at the first straight section decreased continuously as the oil concentration increased. They decreased rapidly as the mass flux decreased and the inlet quality increased. The heat transfer coefficients in the U-bend showed the maximum at the $90^{\circ}$/TEX> position. The heat transfer coefficients at the second straight section within the dimensionless length of 48 were larger by a maximum of 33% than the average heat transfer coefficient at the first straight section.

  • With the phaseout of CFC and HCFC refrigerants, refrigeration and heat pump systems must be redesigned to match and improve system performance with alternative refrigerants. A generalized flow model for predicting mass flow rate through short tube orifices is derived from a power law form of dimensionless parameters generated by Pi-theorem. The database for developing the correlation includes extensive experimental data for R12, R22, R134a, R407C, R410A, and R502 from the open literature. The correlation yields an average deviation of $0.3\%$ and a standard deviation of $6.1\%$ based on the present database. In addition, rating charts for predicting refrigerant flow rate through short tube orifices are generated for R12, R22, R134a, R407C, R410A, and R502.
