Economic Design of Three-Stage $\bar{X}$ Control Chart Based on both Performance and Surrogate Variables (성능변수와 대용변수를 이용한 3단계 $\bar{X}$ 관리도의 경제적 설계)

  • Purpose: Two-stage ${\bar{X}}$ chart is a useful tool for process control when a surrogate variable may be used together with a performance variable. This paper extends the two-stage ${\bar{X}}$ chart to a three stage version by decomposing the first stage into the preliminary stage and the main stage. Methods: The expected cost function is derived using Markov-chain approach. The optimal designs are found for numerical examples using a genetic algorithm combined with a pattern search algorithm and compared to those of the two-stage ${\bar{X}}$ chart. Sensitivity analysis is performed to see the parameter effects. Results: The proposed design outperforms the optimal design of the two-stage ${\bar{X}}$ chart in terms of the expected cost per unit time unless the correlation between the performance and surrogate variables is modest and the shift in process mean is smallish. Conclusion: Three-stage ${\bar{X}}$ chart may be a useful alternative to the two-stage ${\bar{X}}$ chart especially when the correlation between the performance and surrogate variables is relatively high and the shift in process mean is on the small side.

  • This paper presents an intelligent model; named as free model, approach for a closed-loop system identification using input and output data and its application to design a power system stabilizer (PSS). The free model concept is introduced as an alternative intelligent system technique to design a controller for such dynamic system, which is complex, difficult to know, or unknown, with input and output data only, and it does not require the detail knowledge of mathematical model for the system. In the free model, the data used has incremental forms using backward difference operators. The parameters of the free model can be obtained by simultaneous perturbation stochastic approximation (SPSA) method. A linear transformation is introduced to convert the free model into a linear model so that a conventional linear controller design method can be applied. In this paper, the feasibility of the proposed method is demonstrated in a one-machine infinite bus power system. The linear quadratic regulator (LQR) method is applied to the free model to design a PSS for the system, and compared with the conventional PSS. The proposed SPSA-based LQR controller is robust in different loading conditions and system failures such as the outage of a major transmission line or a three phase to ground fault which causes the change of the system structure.

Transfer characteristics of a lithium chloride-potassium chloride molten salt

  • Pyroprocessing is an alternative method of reprocessing spent fuel, usually involving the dissolving spent fuel in a molten salt media. The National Nuclear Laboratory designed, built, and commissioned a molten salt dynamics rig to investigate the transfer characteristics of molten lithium chloride-potassium chloride eutectic salt. The efficacy and flow characteristics of a high-temperature centrifugal pump and argon gas lift were obtained for pumping the molten salt at temperatures up to $500^{\circ}C$. The rig design proved suitable on an industrial scale and transfer methods appropriate for use in future molten salt systems. Corrosion within the rig was managed, and melting techniques were optimized to reduce stresses on the rig. The results obtained improve the understanding of molten salt transport dynamics, materials, and engineering design issues and support the industrialization of molten salts pyroprocessing.

A simplified analysis of catenary action in steel beams in fire and implications on fire resistant design

  • This paper describes the results of a numerical investigation of the large deflection behaviour of steel beams under fire conditions, taking into consideration the effect of catenary action provided by the surrounding structures. The main focus is on the development, validation and application of a simplified calculation method that may be adopted in design calculations. Because no experimental result is available for validation of the simplified calculation method, the finite element program ABAQUS has been used to simulate the large deflection behaviour of a number of steel beams so as to provide alternative results for validation of the proposed method. Utilising catenary action has the potential of eliminating fire protection to all steel beams without causing structural failure in fire. However, practical application of catenary action will be restricted by concerns over large beam deflection causing integrity failure of the fire resistant compartment and additional cost of strengthening the connections and the surrounding structures to resist the catenary forces in the steel beams. This paper will provide a discussion on practical implications of utilising catenary action in steel beams as a means of eliminating fire protection. A number of examples will then be provided to illustrate the type of steel framed structure that could benefit the most from exploiting catenary action in fire resistant design.

A Study on the Application and Characteristics of Interior Design in the Traditional Housing from an Ecological Aspect (생태학적 관점에 의한 전통 주거의 실내디자인 특성과 적용에 관한 연구)

  • The ideal housing in the 21st century means that it can provide people with the balanced life between nature and human life, while is possible through the systematic harmony of nature, environment, and human. As our society increasingly pays attention to the importance of environment, environment friendly houses and ecological dwellings are being built. If we add our own cultural environment attribute and historical identity to the ecological housing, we can create the most unique Korean ecological architecture. This study examines ecological interior expression methods from the traditional housing architecture which started out of nature, in order to find out an ecological approach in the interior design of the dwelling space. Based upon this examination, it mainly focuses on how these methods can be applied to a modern housing architecture. From an ecological perspective, the traditional house interior has two distinct characteristics; nature friendly and human friendly, because it considered nature and human harmoniously. The interior of the traditional housing can be divided into three types; nature friendly, health friendly, and human friendly. Finally, this study investigates the ecological value of the three types and application of them to modern housing. It will help to find out the harmonious way of building a house harmonizing both nature and human. Especially, considering that the nature is being destructed and the health of human is deteriorating due to the destruction of the nature, this study will show a feasible alternative to build the most Korean style of environmental architecture.

Centrifugal Clutch Design for Unmanned Helicopter - Simulation of Optimal Factors - (농용 무인헬리콥터의 원심클러치 설계 - 최적 설계치의 시뮬레이션 -)

  • Aerial application using an agricultural unmanned helicopter was suggested for an alternative against current pesticide application methods. Centrifugal clutches play important roles in the performance and safety of the helicopter operation. A previous study analyzed and verified the power transfer theory of the guide type centrifugal clutch. Based on the clutch theory, optimal designs of the clutch became possible and feasible using a simulation method. Design criteria of the clutch were the power transfer capacity of 24.66 kW(33.5 PS) at the rated engine speed and the engaging range speed of 3,000${\sim}$3,500 rpm. Various designs were accomplished using the simulation. An optimal clutch was simulated by determining the values of spring constant and mass of friction sector, which were 94,700 N/m and 123.7 g, respectively. The design performed the power capacity of 24.86 kW(33.8 PS) and engagement speed of 3,069 rpm, meeting the design criteria. Using the designed clutch, an efficient transfer of the power would be possible for the unmanned agricultural helicopter.

  • The underground space of the Banwoldang in Daegu is the private enterprise historical development project that Daegu City & The forth construction company of the Samsung, Kolon, Daewoo, Hwasung promote, and take a role as the underground bridgehead that links east and west of the Daegu as the lunction of the 2 subway line. Accordingly, the underground space of the Banwoldang in Daegu have a import significance in that not only the alternative of the solution about the simple commercial formation or the limited ground but also compose the important axis of the city develoment. But, When I see the variety of problems, especially see the negative import in Daegu, the solution of the problems is the large underlying cause that revitalize the city. Consequently, in the study I would like to analyze the characteristics of the large underground space and the directivity of the interior design, to assistant for the develement plan of the more safe, comfort underground space.

Nonparametric procedures based on aligned method and placement for ordered alternatives in randomized block design (랜덤화 블록 모형에서 정렬방법과 위치를 이용한 순서형 대립가설에 대한 비모수 검정법)

  • Nonparametric procedures in a randomized block design was proposed by Friedman (1937) as a general alternative as well as suggested as a test for ordered alternatives by Page (1963). These methods are used for the rank of treatments in each block. In this paper, we proposed nonparametric procedures using aligned method proposed by Hodges and Lehmann (1962) to reduce among block information and based on placement suggested by Kim (1999) in a randomized block design. We also perform a Monte Carlo study to compare the empirical powers of the proposed procedures and established method.

National Highway's Design Criteria Based on Analysis of Functional Classification (일반국도의 수행 기능 분석에 의한 적정 설계기준 연구)

  • This study shows that a functional order relationship of national highways in rural areas, which provides the functional system as a principal and minor arterial highways, can be established by the use of statististics. As a result, the adequate functional design criteria of those highways are proposed on the basis of the traffic characteristics in those areas. According to those statistical studies, a function of national highways in the national road network is proved to form three categories broadly. Especially, the survey results based on the traffic characteristics on each road sections show that the initially constructed national highways can not provide an adequate functional role as the arterial highways in the studied areas. In order to operate the intended national highways functionally as the arterial highways, the functional design criteria of highways and the standard order of highway facilities based on the design traffic speed should be considered as an alternative.

Transmit Precoder Design for Two-User Broadcast Channel with Statistical and Delayed CSIT

  • Recent studies have revealed the efficacy of incorporating delayed channel state information at transmit side (CSIT) in transmission scheme design. This paper focuses on transmit precoder design to maximize the ergodic sum-rate in a two-user Multiple-Input Single-Output (MISO) system with delayed and statistical CSIT. A new transmit strategy which precodes signals in all transmit slots is proposed in this paper, denoted as all time-slots precoding Alternative MAT (AAMAT). There is a common procedure in conventional delayed-CSIT based schemes, which is retransmitting the overheard interferences. Since the retransmitting signal is intended to both users, all previous schemes tend to use only one antenna. We however figure out an improvement in spectral efficiency could be realized if all antennas can be utilized. In this paper, we detail the design of the procoder which enabling all antennas and also we compute a lower bound of the ergodic sum-rate in an ideal condition. In addition, simulation results demonstrate the superiority of our proposed scheme.
