  • In this study, several design and construction cases of the pile bent system for bridges were introduced. The lateral displacement of the pile bent system is larger than the displacement of pile cap system, due to the smaller bending stiffness and the longer unsupported length. So, the analysis of the lateral pile displacement is main factor for the design of pile bent system and superstructure. For the accurate estimation of the pile displacement, an iterative analysis method was developed. The superstructure was analyzed regarding the pile foundation as $6{\times}6$ spring and the substructure was analysed using non-linear load transfer curves (p-y, t-z, q-z curve). And, to verify this analysis method, the estimated displacements are compared with the results of lateral load test. This analysis method is expected to be a viable alternative approach for the design of bridge foundation hereafter.

  • This research paper explores selected behavioral outcomes of a multi-sensory environment. An experimental study was conducted at a specialized facility for the ageing in Sweden. The objective was to explore the effects of agitated behaviors of ageing residents with dementia and to identify any short-term effects. Appointed nursing staff was instructed to record physically and verbally agitated behaviors on three occasions; pre-session, mid-session, and post-session. Over seven months, nine participants received sixty-one sessions in the multi-sensory room. ANOVA and Post hoc multiple comparisons were performed to identify the differences in mean between each session. Generally irritated/frustrated behavior and eating/drinking non foods revealed statistically significant differences, while there were no significant results in verbally agitated behavior. One short-term effect was observed in one agitated category; a reduction of generally irritated/frustrated behavior. These results suggest that the multi-sensory environment can have positive effects on some manifestations of agitated behavior. This study proposes that a multi-sensory environment may be recommended as an alternative intervention for physically agitated behavior among this category of residents. However, more research is needed to understand the specific effects and the best use of the multi-sensory environment for this population.

So, it is very important to design and build proper housing facilities for Germ Free Pigs. Among the design issues related to Gnotobiotic Pigs' farms, circulation system takes a high position because it carries an important role in keeping the pig's housing environment aseptic. Considering those, this study aims to propose the guidelines for the design of circulation system in Germ Free Pig's facilities. The results of this study are as follows. At first, functional areas of Germ Free Pigs' facilities have been divided into three categories according to the clean level; aseptic area, semi-aseptic area, and non-aseptic area. Secondly, the basic principles of circulation system have been proposed. Finally, circulation system of Gnotobiotic Pigs' facility has been explored as a form of diagram according to the circulating subjects. These include human circulation, pig's circulation, and goods' circulation. This study has some limitations in that it is transcendent and lacks empirical evidence. Despite of some weaknesses, it is expected to give some useful guidelines for the design of circulation system in Germ Free Pigs' facilities.

  • Alternative formulation is presented for robust optimization problems and an efficient computational scheme for reliability estimation is proposed. Both design variables and design parameters considered as random variables about their nominal values. To ensure the robustness of objective performance a new cost function bounding the performance and a new constraint limiting the performance variation are introduced. The constraint variations are regulated by considering the probability of feasibility. Each probability constraint is transformed into a sub-optimization problem and then is resolved with the modified advanced first order second moment(AFOSM) method for computational efficiency. The proposed robust optimization method has advantages that the mean value and the variation of the performance function are controlled simultaneously and the second order sensitivity information is not required even in case of gradient based optimization. The suggested method is examined by solving three examples and the results are compared with those for deterministic case and those available in literature.

  • In the early phases of the product life cycle, Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is recently used to support the decision-making for the product concepts, and the best alternative can be selected based on its estimated LCA and benefits. Both the lack of detailed information and time for a full LCA for a various range of design concepts need a new approach for the environmental analysis. This paper explores a new approximate LCA methodology for the product concepts by grouping products according to their environmental characteristics and by mapping product attributes into environmental impact driver (EID) index. The relationship is statistically verified by exploring the correlation between total impact indicator and energy impact category. Then, a neural network approach is developed to predict an approximate LCA of grouping products in conceptual design. Trained learning algorithms for the known characteristics of existing products will quickly give the result of LCA for newly designed products. The training is generalized by using product attributes for an EID in a group as well as another product attributes for the other EIDs in other groups. The neural network model with back propagation algorithm is used, and the results are compared with those of multiple regression analysis. The proposed approach does not replace the full LCA but it would give some useful guidelines for the design of environmentally conscious products in conceptual design phase.
