  • Recently, slope stability analysis in current design criteria is criticized for its unrealistic assumption of groundwater table and slope stability analysis incorporating seepage analysis considering rainfall is gaining a recognition as an alternative. However, a reasonable method for determining the rainfall used in the seepage analysis has not yet been established. Rainfall input for seepage analysis is a time series of rainfall and is similar to the hyetograph which is usually obtained from hydrology. In this paper a method to obtain the hyetograph from the intensity-duration-frequency is proposed. The resulting hyetograph can be used in the in the slope design stage. Also some considerations for practical application of slope stability analysis considering the rainfall is included.

  • Environmental friendly architecture'is undeniably a verb important and global paradigm. Beyond energy-conscious design and building with renewable materials, environmental friendly architecture also deals with recyclable and found forms and images. Concepts of sustainable building lead to the analysis of all currently available options for building optimization. Tomorrow's framework for information and communication processing, as well as automation and process optimization. The purpose of this study is to define the conceptions about 'environmental friendly Architecture' and to discover new alternative architecture in the end of the 20th century.

  • This paper deals with the simulation model for A-Mart logistic center design and operations. In developed simulation model, receiving docks, conveyor sorter, conveyor system, shipping docks, material handling devices and manual sorting stations are considered. Three types of cargo such as transfer center cargo, distribution center cargo and supermarket cargo are considered. The simulation model and process animation are developed using the simulation package ARENA. Among various design and operation alternatives consisting of the number of workers of receiving dock, allocation of receiving docks by cargo types, conveyor sorter velocity, the number of folk-lift, the number of manual sorting operators and overall layout, the best alternatives of each subsystem are selected by simulation analysis. The major performance measures such as sorter throughput, utilization of operators at each station, receiving docks utilization and folk-lift utilization are considered for the alternative evaluation.

  • Nowadays, one of the serious problems in the KEPCO system is a much higher fault current than the SCC (Short Circuit Capacity) of the circuit breaker. Since superconductivity technology has become more developed, the HTS-FCL (High Temperature Superconductor-Fault Current Limiter) may become an attractive alternative to solving the fault current problem. In order to achieve the best performance, the parameters of HTS-FCL should be designed optimally. Under this setting, this paper presents the optimal design method of parameters for resistive type HTS-FCL using the Monte Carlo technique.

  • Traditional design methods of bearing capacity of shallow foundations are deterministic in the sense that they do not explicitly consider the inherent uncertainty associated with the factors affecting bearing capacity. To account for such uncertainty, available deterministic methods rather employ a fixed global factor of safety that may lead to inappropriate bearing capacity predictions. An alternative stochastic approach is essential to provide a more rational estimation of bearing capacity. In this paper, the likely distribution of predicted bearing capacity of strip footings subjected to vertical loads is obtained using a stochastic approach based on the Monte Carlo simulation. The approach accounts for the uncertainty associated with the soil shear strength parameters: cohesion, c, and friction angle, ${\phi}$, and the cross correlation between c and ${\phi}$. A set of stochastic design charts that assure target reliability levels of 90% and 95%, are developed for routine use by practitioners. The charts negate the need for a factor of safety and provide a more reliable indication of what the actual bearing capacity might be.

  • Nowadays, the researches for improving LCD manufacturing process and reducing cost are getting accelerated and additionally new types of process are widely developed. In this situation, APEM(Anti Photo Exposure Method) which does not need photo-lithography is realized as one of possible alternative of LCD process. APEM makes LCD pattern by stamping and it can reduce the process cost and process time because of its simplicity. But optical alignment between pattern glass and target glass is very critical fact to realize the precise patterns. So, the analysis of deflection of large size of glass is carried out and design of experiment method is applied for optimal design of jig.

  • LDV measurements in large cavitation tunnel around a propeller in operation are carried out to provide valuable information for more accurate wake-adapted propeller design and to study hull-propeller interactions. Effective velocities are computed by both the simplified vortex ring method and by RANS solver with the body force representing the propeller load. The former method uses the nominal velocities measured at the propeller plane as an input data of the numerical method and shows a better agreement with experimental data. The latter shows the qualitative agreement and may be used as an alternative design tools in the preliminary design stage.

  • Modem society has been complicated and diverse, and then various paradigms coexist. We can see Postmodernism moving in the flows of modern architecture. Therefore looming large is the Fold architecture that can surmount the limit of design in Postmodernism and Deconstruction and suits to the modern culture as an architectural alternative. So I believe this research can make us perceive the streams of modern interior space by considering the features and meanings of Fold conception which has been noticeable in the overall architecture and culture since the middle of 1990's with analyzing and defining atypical organic Fold characteristics appearing in modern interior since 2000, and also predict the next changing direction.

  • The number of tunnel has fast increased with the rapid expansion of highway network. Tunnel should be designed to provide for drivers both safety and pleasant driving conditions. In this perspective, the design for tunnel lightning is very important in order to provide its safety, pleasantness, and cost-efficiency of maintenance, all of which should be considered and analyzed for a better tunnel lighting. This paper attempts to compare the low-pressure sodium lamp, which have usually been used for tunnel lighting, with the fluorescent lamp, which we consider as an alternative for the former. In an effort to determine the number of lamps to meet the required illuminance in the tunnel, this research employs a simulation technique which would allow us to conjecture, with the aid of basic model, the life cycle cost for illumination per each tunnel. This analysis is expected to provide a basic method and related information for tunnel development and design.
