The purpose of this study was to isolate bacteriocin-producing bacteria with antagonistic activities against pathogens from the intestines of pigs for probiotic use. Lactobacillus sp. AP 116 possessing antimicrobial property was selected from a total of 500 isolates. The AP 116 strain showed a relatively broad spectrum of inhibitory activity against Listeria monocytogenes, Clostridium perfringens, Pediococcus dextrinicus, and Enterococcus strains using the spot-on-lawn method. Bacteriocin activity remained unchanged after 15 min of heat treatment at $121^{\circ}C$ and exposure to organic solvents; however, it diminished after treatment with proteolytic enzymes. Maximum production of bacteriocin occurred at $34^{\circ}C$ when a pH of 6.0 was maintained throughout the culture during fermentation. According to a tricine SDS-PAGE analysis, the molecular weight of the bacteriocin was approximately 5 kDa. The isolate tolerated bile salts and low pH, and also induced nitric oxide (NO) in mouse peritoneal macrophages. Bacteriocin and bacteriocin-producing bacteria, such as Lactobacillus sp. AP 116, could be potential candidates for use as probiotics as an alternative to antibiotics in the pig industry.

This study proposes an alternative approach for the use of chitosan silver-based dressing for the control of foot infection with multidrug-resistant bacteria. Sixty-five bacterial isolates were isolated from 40 diabetic patients. Staphylococcus aureus (37%) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (18.5%) were the predominant isolates in the ulcer samples. Ten antibiotics were in vitro tested against diabetic foot clinical bacterial isolates. The most resistant S. aureus and P. aeruginosa isolates were then selected for further study. Three chitosan sources were tested individually for chelating silver nanoparticles. Squilla chitosan silver nanoparticles (Sq. Cs-Ag0) showed the maximum activity against the resistant bacteria when mixed with amikacin that showed the maximum synergetic index. This, in turn, resulted in the reduction of the amikacin MIC value by 95%. For evaluation of the effectiveness of the prepared dressing using Artemia salina as the toxicity biomarker, the LC50 was found to be 549.5, 18,000, and 10,000 μg/ml for amikacin, Sq. Cs-Ag0, and dressing matrix, respectively. Loading the formula onto chitosan hydrogel dressing showed promising antibacterial activities, with responsive healing properties for the wounds in normal rats of those diabetic rats (polymicrobial infection). It is quite interesting to note that no emergence of any side effect on either kidney or liver biomedical functions was noticed.
Background: Significant increases in the bacterial resistance to various antibiotics have been found in fish farms. Non-antibiotic therapies for infectious diseases in aquaculture are needed. In recent years, light-emitting diode technology has been applied to the inactivation of pathogens, especially those affecting humans. The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of blue light (wavelengths 405 and 465 nm) on seven major bacterial pathogens that affect fish and shellfish important in aquaculture. Results: We successfully demonstrate inactivation activity of a 405/465-nm LED on selected bacterial pathogens. Although some bacteria were not fully inactivated by the 465-nm light, the 405-nm light had a bactericidal effect against all seven pathogens, indicating that blue light can be effective without the addition of a photosensitizer. Photobacterium damselae, Vibrio anguillarum, and Edwardsiella tarda were the most susceptible to the 405-nm light (36.1, 41.2, and $68.4J\;cm^{-2}$, respectively, produced one log reduction in the bacterial populations), whereas Streptococcus parauberis was the least susceptible ($153.8J\;cm^{-2}$ per one log reduction). In general, optical density (OD) values indicated that higher bacterial densities were associated with lower inactivating efficacy, with the exception of P. damselae and Vibrio harveyi. In conclusion, growth of the bacterial fish and shellfish pathogens evaluated in this study was inactivated by exposure to either the 405- or 465-nm light. In addition, inactivation was dependent on exposure time. Conclusions: This study presents that blue LED has potentially alternative therapy for treating fish and shellfish bacterial pathogens. It has great advantages in aspect of eco-friendly treating methods differed from antimicrobial methods.

Excessive dynamic airway collapse (EDAC) is a disease entity of excessive reduction of the central airway diameter during exhalation, without cartilage collapse. An 80-year-old female presented with generalized edema and dyspnea at our hospital. The patient was in a state of acute decompensated heart failure due to pneumonia with respiratory failure. We accordingly managed the patient with renal replacement therapy, mechanical ventilation and antibiotics. Bronchoscopy confirmed the diagnosis of EDAC. We scheduled extubation after the improvement of pneumonia and heart condition. However, extubation failure occurred due to hypercapnic respiratory failure with poor expectoration. Her EDAC was improved in response to high flow nasal oxygen therapy (HFNOT). Subsequently, the patient was stabilized and transferred to the general ward. HFNOT, which generates physiologic positive end expiratory pressure (PEEP) effects, could be an alternative and effective management of EDAC. Further research and clinical trials are needed to demonstrate the therapeutic effect of HFNOT on EDAC.

Klebsiella pneumoniae is a Gram-negative, rod-shape bacterium causing disease in human and animal lungs. K. pneumoniae has been often found to gain antimicrobial resistance, thus it has been difficult to treat K. pneumoniae infection with antibiotics. For such infection, bacteriophage can provide an alternative approach for pathogenic bacterial infection with antimicrobial resistance, because of its sensitivity and specificity to the host bacteria. Bacteriophage KP1 was isolated in sewage and showed specific infectivity to K. pneumoniae. Here, we report the draft genome sequence of Klebsiella pneumoniae phage KP1. The draft genome of KP1 is 167,989 bp long, and the G + C content is 39.6%. The genome has 295 predicted ORFs and 14 tRNA genes. In addition, it encodes various enzymes which involve in lysis of the host cell such as lysozyme and holin.
The aim of this study was to isolate a potential multifunctional biocontrol agent from bacteria for control of multiple plant diseases as an alternative to fungicides. A total of 201 strains were isolated from soil undamaged by repeated cultivation in Sunchang and their ability to produce antibiotics, siderophores and extracellular enzymes such as protease, cellulase and amylase was investigated. Selected strain SCS3 produced cellulose, protease and amylase. This strain also produced siderophores and showed excellent antifungal activity against various phytopathogens. SCS3 was identified as Bacillus subtilis using 16S rRNA sequencing, and named Bacillus subtilis SCS3. Finally, physiological and biochemical characteristics of B. subtilis SCS3 were examined. From the results, B. subtilis SCS3 was found to be a useful multifunctional biocontrol agent against various phytopathogens.

Artemisia capillaris THUNB is a perennial herb that belongs to the family Compositae spp and the most common plant among the various herbal folk remedies used in treatment of abdominal pain, hepatitis, chronic liver disease, jaundice and coughing in Korea. In this study, antimicrobial effects of Artemisia capillaris extracts on the food poisoning bacteria were investigated for further clinical application, which is an alternative for the use of antibiotics and their unexpected resistance. Artemisia capillaris extract using ethyl acetate showed the highest antimicrobial effects on S. enteritidis, E. coli O157 : H7, L. monocytogenes and S. aureus. The chloroform extract showed strong effects on all kinds of bacteria; whereas ethanol and methanol extracts showed weaker effects. Finally, ether and water extracts showed the weakest effects under the same conditions. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of ethyl acetate extract was 1 mg/mL for E. coli O157 : H7 and L. monocytogenes, and 2 mg/mL for S. enteritidis and S. aureus. The inhibitory effects on all the bacteria continued for 12 hours after incubation using 20 mg/mL and 30 mg/mL of ethyl acetate extract. The inhibitory effects continued maximally for 72 hours. The results of these studies indicate Artemisia capillaris extract exhibited excellent antimicrobial and inhibitory effects on the food poisoning pathogenic bacteria; S. enteritidis, E. coli O157 : H7, L. monocytogenes and S. aureus.

Ginseng (Panax ginseng) is one of the most widely cultivated medicinal herb in Korea. However, yield losses reached up to 30~60 % due to various diseases during 3 or 5 years of ginseng cultivation. Therefore, successful production of ginseng roots depends primarily on the control of diseases. The objective of this study is to select potential multifunctional biocontrol agents from actinomycetes for the control of multiple ginseng diseases as an alternative to fungicides. Ninety three Streptomyces strains were selected and their ability to produce antibiotics, siderophore and lytic enzymes such as protease and cellulose were investigated. Eight of the isolates, strains A75, A501, 515, 523, A704, A1444, A3265 and A3283 produced cellulase and protease. These strains also produced siderophore and showed potent antifungal activity against Botrytis cinerea, Cylindrocarpon destructans, Collectotricum gloeosporioides, Phytophthora capsici and Rhizoctonia solani causing ginseng root rot.
The paper reviewed research status and outlook of genetic transformation in fruit trees in Korea. Genetic transformation has been long considered as an alternative technique overcoming limitation of conventional breeding and conducted since early 1990's. An efficient genetic transformation was established with major cultivars of apple, even in Fuji and Gamhong, and some transgenic apple plants have been transferred into the greenhouse for further analysis of gene expression. A few successes of genetic transformation have been reported and application to a variety of cultivars tried in citrus and kiwifruit. Successful genetic transformation has not been reported in the other fruit trees including grapevine, yet and it is considered being at the level of research. Those factors including replacement of antibiotics as a selective agent, use of transgenic rootstocks and manipulation of gene expression at proper parts and developmental stages have been prerequisites for the rapid commercialization of transgenic fruit plants.
The present study was performed to investigate an antibacterial activity of specific bacteriophage (phage) and Bacillus subtilis KM-1 (B. subtilis) mixture against Edwardsiella tarda (E. tarda). An appropriate number of phage showing the most effective antibacterial activity was $2{\times}10^5$ PFU/ml with $1{\times}10^7$ CFU/ml of B. subtilis 36 h post incubation. On the other hand, B. subtilis showed a dose dependant manner in inducing antibacterial activity in the presence of phage ($2{\times}10^5$ PFU/ml). The phage and B. subtilis mixture showed higher antibacterial activity against E. tarda than phage or B. subtilis only. These results suggest that the phage and B. subtilis mixture could be utilized as an alternative to antibiotics in the control of fish diseases caused by E. tarda.
