Heavy metal contamination has attracted considerable attention during recent decades due to the potential risk brought about for human beings and the environment. Several adsorbent materials are utilized for the purification of contaminated water resources among which chitosan is considered as an appropriate alternative. Copper is a heavy metal contaminants found in several industrial wastewaters and its adsorption on porous and macroporous chitosan membranes is investigated in this study. Membranes are prepared by phase inversion and particulate leaching method and their morphology is characterized using SEM analysis. Batch adsorption experiments are performed and it is found that copper adsorption on macroporous chitosan membrane is higher than porous membrane. The iso-steric heat of adsorption was determined by analyzing the variations of temperature to investigate its effect on adsorption characteristics of macroporous chitosan membranes. Furthermore, desorption experiments were studied using NaCl and EDTA as eluants. The mechanism of copper adsorption was also investigated using XPS spectroscopy which confirms simultaneous occurrence of chelation and electrostatic adsorption mechanisms.
Zeolite was synthesized from power station waste, coal fly ash, as an alternative low-cost adsorbent and investigated for the removal of Sr(II) and Cs(I) ions from single- and binary metal aqueous solutions. In order to investigate the adsorption characteristics, the effects of various operating parameters such as initial concentration of metal ions, contact time, and pH of the solutions were studied in a batch adsorption technique. The Langmuir model better fitted the adsorption isotherm data than the Freundlich model. The pseudo second-order model was found more applicable to describe the kinetics of system. The adsorption capacities of Sr(II) and Cs(I) ions obtained from the Langmuir model were 1.7848 mmol/g and 0.7640 mmol/g, respectively. Although the adsorption capacities of individual Sr(II) and Cs(I) ions was less in the binary-system, the sum of the total adsorption capacity (2.3572 mmol/g) of both ions in the binary-system was higher than the adsorption capacity of individual ion in the single-system. Comparing the homogeneous film diffusion model with the homogeneous particle diffusion model, the adsorption was mainly controlled by the particle diffusion process.
Dye removal from waste water via adsorption by activated carbons (ACs) developed from agricultural wastes represents an ideal alternative to other expensive treatment options. Physical and chemical ACs were prepared from rice husks. The textural properties of the ACs were characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller-$N_2$ adsorption and scanning electron microscopy. The chemistry of the carbon surface was investigated by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, base and acid neutralization capacities, pH of the active carbon slurry, and $pH_{pzc}$. The adsorption capacities of the ACs for the basic dye (methylene blue) and acid dye (acid green 25) were determined using parameters such as contact time, pH, and temperature. NaOH-ACs showed the highest surface area and total pore volume, whereas steam-ACs showed the lowest ones.
The natural weathered sand of basalt (WSB) has been used for the removal of cadmium from aqueous solution. The influence of various parameters i.e., contact time, pH, weathered sand of basalt dosage, particle size of the weathered sand of basalt, temperature and initial cadmium concentration were analyzed. Cadmium adsorption kinetics was well described by the pseudo second order model. Adsorption equilibrium for cadmium was properly well fitted to Langmuir isotherm model with maximum adsorption capacity 0.50 mg/g. Compared with the other experimental results using various kinds of adsorbents at a low concentration (1.0 mg/L or so) similar to that of this study, the cadmium removal efficiency using weathered sand of basalt was higher. It has been demonstrated that weathered sand of basalt has a available alternative adsorbent for cadmium when its initial concentration is low.

The aim of the present study is to explore the possibility of utilizing fly ash and loess, as alternative to activated carbon, for the adsorption of diazinon in water. Batch adsorption experiment was performed to evaluate the influences of various factors like initial concentration, contact time and temperature on the adsorption of diazinon. The adsorption data shows that fly ash is not effective for the adsorption of diazinon. The equilibrium data for both activated carbon and loess were fitted well to the Freundlich isotherm model. The pseudo-second-order kinetic model appeared to be the better-fitting model because it has higher $R^2$ compared to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. The thermodynamic parameters such as free energy (${\Delta}G$), the enthalpy (${\Delta}H$) and the entropy (${\Delta}S$) were calculated. Contrary to loess, the ${\Delta}G$ values of activated carbon were negative at the studied temperatures. It indicates that the adsorption of diazinon by activated carbon is a favorable and spontaneous process. The positive ${\Delta}H$ values of activated carbon and loess suggest that the diazinon adsorption process is endothermic in nature. In addition, the positive ${\Delta}S$ values show that increased randomness occurs at the solid/solution surface during the adsorption of diazinon.
Food compost, having a higher organic contents than soil, could be an alternative material to prevent the proliferation of heavy metals contamination in soil. In this study we used a convection-dispersion local equilibrium sorption model(CDE) and a two-site non-equilibrium sorption model to find the effects on the adsorption and transportation of Pb by mixing food compost with soil and we also tried to find the effect of velocity and concentration of the injected solution on the characteristics of Pb. We measured Pb concentrations in injection-liquid and in effluent, and then applied them to CXTFIT program. As a result of column experiments, some parameters(D, R, ${\beta}$, ${\omega}$) used in two-site non-equilibrium adsorption model were obtained. Characteristics of Pb adsorption and transport were analyzed using the parameters(D, R, ${\beta}$, ${\omega}$) obtained from the CXTFIT program, We could know that mixed soil with food compost showed a higher adsorption capacity from the retardation factor(R) calculated from the breakthrough curve(BTCs) of Pb. Rs of soil and mixed soil are 20.45, 37.45 respectively, indicating that the adsorption and the transportation characteristics could be accessed quantitatively by using of two-site non-equilibrium adsorption model.
The present study set out to investigate the adsorption of Cd(II) ions in an aqueous solution by using Peanut Husk Biochar (PHB). An FT-IR analysis revealed that the PHB contained carboxylic and carbonyl groups, O-H carboxylic acids, and bonded-OH groups, such that it could easily adsorb heavy metals. The adsorption of Cd(II) using PHB proved to be a better fit to the Langmuir isotherm than to the Freundlich isotherm. The maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity was 33.89 mg/g for Cd(II). The negative value of ${\Delta}G^o$ confirm that the process whereby Cd(II) is adsorbed onto PHB is feasible and spontaneous in nature. In addition, the value of ${\Delta}G^o$ increase with the temperature, suggesting that a lower temperature is more favorable to the adsorption process. The negative value of ${\Delta}H^o$ indicates that the adsorption phenomenon is exothermic while the negative value of ${\Delta}S^o$ suggests that the process is enthalpy-driven. As an alternative to commercial activated carbon, PHB could be used as a low-cost and environmentally friendly adsorbent for removing Cd(II) from aqueous solutions.

The adsorption of phosphate onto mesoporous $TiO_2$ was investigated in order to reduce phosphorus concentrations in wastewater and provide a potential mode of phosphorus recovery. Three equilibrium isotherms were used to optimize and properly describe phosphate adsorption ($R^2$>0.95). The maximum capacity of phosphate on the adsorbent was found to be 50.4 mg/g, which indicated that mesoporous $TiO_2$ could be an alternative to mesoporous $ZrO_2$ as an adsorbent. A pseudo-second order model was appropriately fitted with experimental data ($R^2$>0.93). Furthermore, the suitable pH for phosphate removal by $TiO_2$ was observed to be in the range of pH 3-7 in accordance with ion dissociation. In contrast, increasing the pH to produce more basic conditions noticeably disturbed the adsorption process. Moreover, the kinetics of the conducted temperature study revealed that phosphate adsorption onto the $TiO_2$ adsorbent is an exothermic process that could have spontaneously occurred and resulted in a higher randomness of the system. In this study, the maximum adsorption using real wastewater was observed at $30^{\circ}C$.
Wastewater from textile industries is a major cause of water pollution in most developing countries. In order to address the issues of water pollution and high cost for treatment processes, the use of an inexpensive and environmentally benign adsorbents has been studied. The objective was to find a better alternative to the conventional methods. Lemon grass waste (ash) collected from a lemon grass stream distillation subunit in Bhutan was tested for dye removal from aqueous solutions. The study investigated the removal of methylene blue using the following operational parameters: initial concentration (100-600 mg/L), contact time, adsorbent dose (0.1-0.55 gm/100 mL), and pH (3-10). It was found that the percentage removal of dye increased with a decrease of the initial concentration and increased contact time and dose of adsorbent. The basic pH solution of dye showed better adsorption capacity as compared to the acidic dye solution. Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms were fitted to the data well. Data fitted better to Lagergren pseudo 2nd order kinetics than a 1st order kinetic model. Surface morphology was also examined via scanning electron microscopy. An elemental analysis was also carried out and the chemical composition and functional groups were analyzed using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy techniques, respectively. The obtained results indicate that lemon grass ash could be employed as a low cost alternative to commercial activated carbon in wastewater treatment for the removal of dyes.
In this study, the performances of various adsorbents-red mud, zeolite, limestone, and oyster shell-were investigated for the adsorption of multi-metal ions ($Cr^{3+}$, $Ni^{2+}$, $Cu^{2+}$, $Zn^{2+}$, $As^{3+}$, $Cd^{2+}$, and $Pb^{2+}$) from aqueous solutions. The result of scanning electron microscopy analyses indicated that the some metal ions were adsorbed onto the surface of the media. Moreover, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis showed that the Si(Al)-O bond (red mud and zeolite) and C-O bond (limestone and oyster shell) might be involved in heavy metal adsorption. The changes in the pH of the aqueous solutions upon applying adsorbents were investigated and the adsorption kinetics of the metal ions on different adsorbents were simulated by pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order models. The sorption process was relatively fast and equilibrium was reached after about 60 min of contact (except for $As^{3+}$). From the maximum capacity of the adsorption kinetic model, the removal of $Pb^{2+}$ and $Cu^{2+}$ were higher than for the other metal ions. Meanwhile, the reaction rate constants ($k_{1,2}$) indicated the slowest sorption in $As^{3+}$. The adsorption mechanisms of heavy metal ions were not only surface adsorption and ion exchange, but also surface precipitation. Based on the metal ions' adsorption efficiencies, red mud was found to be the most efficient of all the tested adsorbents. In addition, impurities in seawater did not lead to a significant decrease in the adsorption performance. It is concluded that red mud is a more economic high-performance alternative than the other tested adsorption materials for applying a removal of multi-metal in seawater.
