In this study tensile and impact properties of three hypo-eutectoid steels containing different micro-alloying elements were investigated in terms of microstructural factors such as pro-eutectoid ferrite grain size, pearlite fraction, interlamellar spacing, and cementite thickness. Yield point phenomenon appeared in all the steel specimens during tensile testing, and ultimate tensile stress was mainly dependent on pearlite fraction. On the other hand, the refinement of austenite grain size caused by the addition of micro-alloying elements resulted in the increment of ferrite volume fraction and carbon contents in pearlite because of the refinement of pro-eutectoid ferrite grain size. As a result, cementite thickness in pearlite increased and had an effect on deteriorating the low temperature impact toughness.
A mixture of elemental Co50Si50 powders was subjected to mechanical alloying (MA) at room temperature to prepare a CoSi thermoelectric compound. Consolidation of the Co50Si50 mechanically alloyed powders was performed in a spark plasma sintering (SPS) machine using graphite dies up to 800 ℃ and 1,000 ℃ under 50 MPa. We have revealed that a nanocrystalline CoSi thermoelectric compound can be produced from a mixture of elemental Co50Si50 powders by mechanical alloying after 20 hours. The average grain size estimated from a Hall plot of the CoSi intermetallic compound prepared after 40 hours of MA was 65 nm. The degree of shrinkage of the consolidated samples during SPS became significant at about 450 ℃. All of the compact bodies had a high relative density of more than 94 % with a metallic glare on the surface. X-ray diffraction data showed that the SPS compact produced by sintering mechanically alloyed powders for 40-hours up to 800 ℃ consisted of only nanocrystalline CoSi with a grain size of 110 nm.

High-strength low-alloy steel is one of the widely used materials in onshore and offshore plant engineering. We investigated the alloying effect of solute atoms in α-Fe based alloy using ab initio calculations. Empirical equations were used to establish the effect of alloying on the Vicker's hardness, screw energy coefficient, and edge dislocation energy coefficient of the steel. Screw and edge energy coefficients were improved by the addition of V and Cr solute atoms. In addition, the addition of trace quantities of V, Cr, and Mn enhanced abrasion resistance. Solute atoms and contents with excellent mechanical properties were selected and their thermal conductivity and thermal expansion behavior were investigated. The addition of Cr atom is expected to form alloys with low thermal conductivity and thermal expansion coefficient. This study provides a better understanding of the state-of-the-art research in low-alloy steel and can be used to guide researchers to explore and develop α-Fe based alloys with improved properties, that can be fabricated in smart and cost-effective manners.
In this study, the ZnS composite powders for host material in phosphor was synthesized in situ by mechanical alloying. As the mechanical alloying time increases, particle size of ZnS decreases. ZnS powders of $1.85\;\mu{m}$ in a mean size was fabricated by mechanical alloying for 10h. The crystal structures of ZnS powders were investigated by X-ray diffraction and the photo-luminescence properties was evaluated with the optical spectra analyzer. The steady state condition of mechanically alloyed ZnS was obtained as a mean particle size of $2\;\mu{m}$ in 5h milling. The sphalerite and wurtize structures coexist in the ZnS mechanically alloyed for 5h. The ZnS powder mechanically alloyed for 10h grows to the sphalerite structure. And the strong emission peaks of ZnS are observed at 480 nm wave length at the powders of mechanically alloyed for 10h, but the sphalerite and wurtize structures in ZnS coexist and emission peaks are not appeared at the powders of mechanically alloyed for 10h.

The effects of alloying elements on the mechanical properties of normalized and quenched 3.60wt%C-2.60wt%C ductile cast iron poured into shell stack mold were investigated. The strength and hardness of as-cast specimen were increased and the elongation of it was decreased with the additions of Mn, Cu and Sn. The strength and hardness were increased with the addition of 0.40wt%Mo and then rather decreased with the increased addition of 0.80wt%. The strength and hardness were increased with normalizing treatment and the strengths of normalized specimens were increased slightly with the addition of alloying elements except Mo. Meanwhile the yield strength of the normalized specimen was increased slightly with the addition of Mo, the tensile strength was not changed much. Meanwhile the hardness and strength of the quenched specimen were slightly increased with the addition of Mn, those were almost not changed with the amount added. The tensile strength of the quenched specimen with larger diameter, when the Cu had been added, and the tensile and yield strengths of them, when Mo had been added, were increased with the addition of alloying element. On the other hand, those were not changed with the amount added. For the case of specimen with smaller diameter, there were no effects of these two elements. When Sn had been added, the strength of hardened specimen with larger diameter was slightly increased with the amount added. However, that with smaller diameter was rather decreased with it. The effect of specimen diameter on the strength of quenched specimen with the addition of Cu, Mo and Sn was reduced.

Prevailing dissemination of machine tools and cutting technology have caused drastic developments of high speed dry machining with work materials of high hardness, and demands on the high-hardness-materials with high efficiency have become increasingly important in terms of productivity, cost reduction, as well as environment-friendly issue. Addition of Si to TiAlN has been known to form nano-composite coating with higher hardness of over 30 GPa and oxidation temperature over $1,000^{\circ}C$. However, it is not easy to add Si to TiAlN by using conventional PVD technologies. Therefore, Ti-Al-Si-N have been prepared by hybrid process of PVD with multiple target sources or PVD combined with PECVD of Si source gas. In this study, a single composite target of Ti-Al-Si was prepared by powder metallurgy of MA (mechanical alloying) and SPS (spark plasma sintering). Properties of he resulting alloying targets were examined. They revealed a microstructure with micro-sized grain of about $1{\sim}5{\mu}m$, and all the elements were distributed homogeneously in the alloying target. Hardness of the Ti-Al-Si-N target was about 1,127 Hv. Thin films of Ti-Al-Si-N were prepared by unbalanced magnetron sputtering method by using the home-made Ti-Al-Si alloying target. Composition of the resulting thin film of Ti-Al-Si-N was almost the same with that of the target. The thin film of Ti-Al-Si-N showed a hardness of 35 GPa and friction coefficient of 0.66.
The effects of alloying elements, Cr, Mo, and N on repassivation characteristics of stainless steels were investigated by using the abrading electrode technique and a.c impedance spectroscopy. The role of alloying elements on the stability of passive film and their repassivation characteristics were examined using alloy steels such as Fe-Cr, Fe-Cr-Mo, 304, 304LN, 316, and 316LN. The electrochemical characteristics of the passive film were investigated by in-situ d.c. and a.c. electrochemical methods. Localized corrosion resistance is believed to have much to do with the stability and repassivation characteristics of the passive film. The effects of alloying elements on the current transients and repassivation kinetics were systematically examined by using the abrading electrode technique and a.c. impedance spectroscopy. The experimental results were analyzed in order to elucidate the relationship between passive film stability, repassivation characteristics, and alloying elements.
In this study, various alloying elements (Cr, Sr, Ca, Cd) were added to improve the mechanical properties of ADC12 fabricated by a die casting process. The effect of alloying elements on the microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. The phase analysis results of the modified ADC12 alloy with conventional ADC12 alloy, showed the similar characteristics of Al matrix, Si phase, $CuAl_2$ phase and the Fe intermetallic phase. As a result of the microstructure observation, the secondary dendrite arm spacing (SDAS) was shown to have decreased after the addition of the alloying elements. The eutectic Si phase, which existed as flake form in the conventional ADC12 alloy, was modified finely as a fiber form in the modified ADC12 alloy. It was observed that the $CuAl_2$ phase as the strengthening phase was relatively finely distributed in the modified ADC12 alloy. The Fe intermetallic appeared as a Chinese script shaped $Al_6$ (Mn,Fe) which is detrimental to mechanical properties in conventional ADC12 alloy. On the other hand, in the modified ADC12 alloy, polyhedral ${\alpha}-Al_{15}Si_2$$(Fe,Mn,Cr)_3$ was observed. The tensile properties were improved in the modified ADC12 alloy. The yield strength and tensile strength increased by 12.4% and 10.0%, respectively, in the modified ADC12 alloy, and the elongation was also seen to have been increased. As a result of the pin on disk wear test, the wear resistance properties were also improved by up to about 7% in the modified ADC12 alloy. It is noted that the wear deformation microstructures were also observed, and it was found that the fine eutectic Si and strengthening phases greatly improved abrasion resistance.
Mo-10 at.% Cu nanocomposite powders were fabricated by using planetary ball-milling (PBM), a mechanical alloying technique for preparing nanocomposite alloy powders of metals with mutual insolubility, and the variations in the physical and the chemical characteristics with the process conditions were investigated. We observed that Mo-10 at.% Cu was an appropriate composition to ensure a good alloying grade and minimal welding between particles. The influences of the temperature and the milling conditions on the mechanical alloying process and the phase change of Mo-10 at.% Cu composite powders were investigated, and the particle and the grain sizes of the powders after mechanical alloying were confirmed. The Mo-10 at.% Cu powders showed homogeneous elemental distributions and no phase changes up to $1200^{\circ}C$; their compositions were retained after the mechanical alloying process. The finest grain size obtained was about 5 nm for powders processed using optimum PBM processing conditions: ball-to-powder weight ratio of 5 : 1, ambient air atmosphere, a milling time of 20 h, a rotation speed of 200 rpm, and a stearic acid content of 4 wt.% produced superfine-grained Mo-10 at.% Cu nanocomposite powders with an average grain size of 5 nm (which is smaller than that of other similar materials reported in the literature). The analytical results confirmed that the PBM technique presented here is a promising method for preparing superfine-grained Mo-10 at.% Cu powders with improved properties.
The effects of alloying elements(Mo, Cu, Ni) and austempering temperature conditions on the microstructural morphologies and mechanical properties in austempered ductile cast iron has been investigated. The austempering at $350^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs after austenitizing at $900^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs in all specimens with various alloying elements was optimum because the good combination of tensile and yield strength, hardness and impact value was obtained. The microstructures of these ADIs treated by a forementioned austempering condition are nearly a mixture type of needle and feathery bainite. Among those alloys, Mo-Cu alloyed DCI had the best optimum mechanical properties of hardness and toughness for automobile parts by austempering treatment for 2hrs at $900^{\circ}C$ followed by $350^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs.
