  • Alkyl polyglucosides were synthesized by solvent-free glycosidation using ultrasonic emulsification. We examined glycosidation conditions of fatty alcohol with glucose hydrate and anhydrous glucose in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid. Glucose was emulsified in a molar excess of fatty alcohol for 20 minutes with a ultra-sonicator at room temperature and converted in a stirred reactor to more than 95% polyglucoside within $2.5{\sim}3.5$ hr under $20{\sim}30$ mmHg at $110^{\circ}C$ with a three-fold molar ratio of fatty alcohol to glucose in the presence of 1mol% p-toluenesulfonic acid. It was possible to obtain a polyglucoside mixture of HLB 13 consisting of 65% monoglucoside and 35% oligoglucoside with less than 1% of fatty alcohol.

  • Alkyl polyglucosides (APG), so called natural nonionic surfactants, are prepared with glucose from corn starch and fatty alcohol from palm and/or coconut oil. When we studied on interfacial properties of APG, surface and interfacial tension, cmc, foaming and effectiveness, according to degree of polymerization of glucose unit (D.P.=1.2~1.8) and alkyl chain length, the former hardly affects but the latter greatly affects on them. The order of detergency for fatty acid soils decreased as followings ; APG 0814> APG 1214> APG 10> APG 0810> APG 08, and the samples with lowest interfacial tension and maximum adsorption had a better detergency.

  • Interfacial tension between liquid soil and aqueous solution of surfactant can be obtained from theoretical and/or experimental data. A correlation factor(r) between work(Wac) from theotical interfacial tension and detergency was 0.93 at lower concentration(0.04%) and 0.37 at higher concentration(0.1%) but a correlation factor(r) from experimental data(Wae) was 0.95 and 0.84, respectively. There were, therefore, good correlation between adhesional work and detergency at lower concentration but large deviation between them from theoretical and experimental one at higher concentration.

  • Surfactant-enhanced electrokinetic remediation is an emerging technology that can effectively remove hydrocarbons from low-permeability soils. In this study, the electrokinetic remediation using APG(alkyl polyglucoside) was conducted for the removal of phenanthrene from kaolinite. APG, which was an environmentally compatible and non-toxic surfactant, was used at concentrations of 5, 15, and 30g/1 to enhance the solubility of phenanthrene. Also an electrolyte solution was used for considering a relation between electrical potential gradient and removal efficiency of phenanthrene. When the electrolyte solution was used, it represented low electrical potential gradient, but the removal efficiency was lower than that of no electrolyte system. Removal efficiency of phenanthrene in EK process using surfactant solution depended on concentration of surfactant. Because surfactant increased the solubility and the mobility of phenanthrene, when surfactant concentration was high, high removal efficiency was observed.
