  • Korean cabbage, a member of the Brassicaceae family which also includes cauliflower, mustard, radish, and turnip plants, is a crucial leafy vegetable crop. Korean cabbage is harvested after completion of the leaf heading process and is often prepared for use in "baechu kimchi", a traditional Korean food. Many of the components in Korean cabbage are essential for proper human nutrition; these components can be divided into two groups: primary metabolites, which include carbohydrates, amino acids, fatty acids, and organic acids, and secondary metabolites such as flavonoids, carotenoids, sterols, phenolic acids, alkaloids, and glucosinolates (GSLs). Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, this study examined the variety of volatile compounds (including isothiocyanates) contained in Korean cabbage and its seed, which resulted in the identification of 16 and 12 volatile compounds, respectively. The primary volatile compound found in the cabbage was ethyl linoleolate (~23%), while 4,5-epithiovaleronitrile (~46%) was the primary volatile component in the seed.

  • Berberine is one of alkaloids extracted from Phellodendri Cortex or Coptidis Rhizoma and has extensively used as an antibacterial and antidiarrheal drug. In order to increase the bioavailability of berberine preparation, berberine pamoate was synthesized and investigated on its usage in vitro and in vivo. Berberine was more rapidly extracted from herbal plants by hot water extraction method than soxhlet extraction method. Berberine pamoate was easily synthesized from berberine hydrochloride and potassium pamoate solution and identified using the infrared spectrum. Quantitative analysis of berberine was possible in methanol solution by fluorometric determination. The dissolution rate of berberine pamoate was more decreased than that of berberine hydrochloride in simulated gastric fluid and simulated intestinal fluid. The remaining proportion of berberine pamoate in the small intestine of rat was maintained at high concentration for a long time as compared with that of berberine hydrochloride.

  • Saururus chinensis has been reported to contain compounds such as lignans, alkaloids, diterpenes, flavonoids, tannins, steroids, and lipids. Fermentation is commonly used to break down certain undesirable compounds, to induce effective microbial conversion, and to improve the potential nutraceutical values. Previous studies have reported that the fermentation process could modify naturally occurring constituents, including isoflavons, saponins, phytosterols, and phenols, and could enhance biological activities, specifically antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. The probiotic strains used for fermentation exert beneficial effects and are safe. In this study, the antioxidative effects of the Bacillus subtilis fermentation of Saururus chinensis were investigated in a rat model with Triton WR-1339-induced hyperlipidemia by comparing the measured antioxidative biological parameters of fermented Saururus chinensis extract to those of nonfermented Saururus chinensis extract. Fermentation played a more excellent role than nonfermentation in ultimately protecting the body from oxidative stress in the liver of the experimental rats with Triton WR-1339-induced hyperlipidemia.

  • Codonopsis lanceolata has numerous chemical constituents that includes polyphenols, saponins, tannins, triterpene, alkaloids, and steroids. The extract of C. lanceolata was partitioned with Haxane, CH2Cl2, EtOAc, n-BuOH and MeOH. The determination of structure for lancemaside G, lancemaside B, lancemaside A were based on physicochemical and HPLC chromatogram data, including NMR and HR-MS. In addition, tangshenoside I and lobetyolin were identified in the material separation process for the extract of C. lanceolata, and content analysis was performed using HPLC. The compounds were confirmed as lancemaside G, lancemaside B, lancemaside A, tangshenoside I, and lobetyolin.

  • The effects of aporplline isoquinoline alkaloids such as liriodenine. anonaine and asimilobine on dopamine biosynthesis in PC12 cells were investigated. Treatment of PC12 cells with liriodenine (10 ${\mu}$M), anonaine (0.05 ${\mu}$M) and asimilobine (0.15 ${\mu}$M) showed 33.6%, 37.7% and 35.1 % inhibition of dopamine content for 12 h. The IC$\sub$50/ values of liriodenine. anonaine and asimilobine were 8.4 ${\mu}$M. 0.05 ${\mu}$M and 0.13 ${\mu}$M. respectively. (omitted)
