Development of Adhesive Resins Formulated with Rapeseed Flour Hydrolyzates for Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF) (유채박 가수분해물을 이용한 중밀도섬유판(MDF) 제조용 접착제의 개발)

  • The interest to develop adhesives from renewable resources is growing to substitute petroleum-based adhesive resins in the manufacture of wood based panels. In our study, rapeseed flour (RSF), which is the by-product of bio-diesel produced from rapeseed, were hydrolyzed with acid and alkali. As a crosslinking agents of the RSF hydrolyzates, phenol-formaldehyde prepolymers (PF) were prepared. The RSF hydrolyzates and PF were mixed to complete the formulation of RSF-based adhesive resins, and the resins were applied to make the medium density fiberboard (MDF). The physical and mechanical properties of the MDF were measured to examine whether RSF can be used as raw materials of adhesive resins for the manufacture of MDF or not. The average moisture content and density of the MDF made with RSF-based adhesive resins satisfied the minimum requirement of KS standard, but the thickness swelling was not. The bending strengths of the MDF made with RSF-based adhesive resins were lower than that of the MDF made with commercial UF resins, but the internal bonding strengths of tested MDF in some make-up conditions of RSF-based adhesive resins were higher than that of MDF made with commercial UF resins. These results showed the potential of RSF as a raw material of adhesives for the production of MDF. Future works on the optimal manufacturing process conditions of MDF made with RSF-based adhesive resins are required to improve the performance of MDF made with RSF-based resins.

Gelatinization and Retrogradation Properties of Surfactant Added Sweet Potato Starches (계면활성제 첨가 고구마 전분의 호화와 노화특성)

  • Physicochemical properties, gelatinization and retrogradation characteristics of surfactant added sweet potato starches were investigated. Three different surfactants, SSL (sodium stearoyl-2-lactylate), Dimodan (mono/diglyceride) and SE1670 (sucrose fatty acid ester 1670) were used. Shapes and crystallinities of starch granules were not changed by the addition of surfactants. Total lipid contents increased and the amylose content decreased by the addition of surfactants and the order was as follows: SE1670>SSL>Dimodan. The swelling power and solubility at $80^{\circ}C$ decreased in the surfactant added starches. By amylograph, initial gelatinization temperature of untreated sweet potato starch was $72.5^{\circ}C$, and did not change by the addition of surfactants, but SE1670 or Dimodan added starch showed the peak viscosity. The peak temperature of gelatinization and enthalpy of untreated starch by DSC were $53.9^{\circ}C$ and 1.3cal/g, respectively. The peak temperature increased by the addition of surfactants, while the enthalpy decreased. In gelatinization by alkali, the viscosity was lower in surfactant added starches than in untreated starch at concentration. The degree of retrogradation by ${\alpha}-amylase-iodine$ method was a lower in SSL and SE1670 added starches than untreated starch and the enthalpy by DSC also decreased in surfactant added and retrograded starches.

Viscometric Properties of Waxy Rice Starches (일반계 및 다수계 찹쌀 전분의 점성 특성)

  • Viscometric properties of japonica(Olchal) and japonica${\times}$indica(Hankang and Suwon 317) waxy rice starches were investigated. Light transmittance of starch suspension increased from $50^{\circ}{\sim}55^{\circ}C$ and remained constant after $75^{\circ}C$. Swelling power was in the order of Hankang, Suwon 317 and Olchal. Amylograph data revealed that Hankang had the highest viscosity at all reference points. The apparent viscosity of 5% starch suspension indicated that the j${\times}$indica starches were completely gelatinized after 30 min cooking at $65^{\circ}C$ whereas japonica starch at $70^{\circ}C$. The apparent viscosity of gelatinized starch at $121^{\circ}C$(15 psig) was higher compared to that of gelatinized one at $95^{\circ}C$. Hankang was the most susceptable to alkali gelatinization followed by Suwon 317 and Olchal.

An Experimental Study on the Degradations of Material Properties of Vinylester/FRP Reinforcing Bars under Accelerated Alkaline Condition (급속 알칼리 환경하에서의 비닐에스터/FRP 보강근의 재료성능 저하 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • There is increasingly more research focusing on the application of FRP reinforcing bars as an alternative material for steel reinforcing bars, but most such research look at short term behavior of FRP reinforced structures. In this study, the microscopic analysis and tensile behavior of Basalt and Glass FRP bars under freezing-thawing and alkaline conditions were experimentally evaluated. After 100 cycles of the freezing and thawing, the tensile strength and elastic modulus of FRP bars decreased by about 5%. In the case of microstructure of FRP bars during the initial 20 days, no significant damages of FRP bar sections were found under $20^{\circ}C$ alkaline solution; however, the specimens immersed in $60^{\circ}C$ alkaline solution were found to experience resin dissolution, fiber damage and the separation of the resin-fiber interface. In the alkaline environment, the strength decrease of about 10% occurred in the environment at $20^{\circ}C$ for 100 days, but the tensile strength of FRPs exposed for 500 days decreased by 50%. At temperature of $40^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$, an abrupt decrease in the strength was observed at 50 and 100 days. Especially, the tensile strength decrease of Basalt fiber Reinforced Polymer bars showed more severe degradation due to the damage caused by dissolution of resin matrix and fiber swelling in alkaline solution. Therefore, in order to improve the long-term performance of the surface braided FRPr reinforcing bars, surface treatment is required to ensure alkali resistance.

Characteristics of Carbozymethylated Substrates from Delignified Autohydrolyzed Substrates (탈리그닌한 자기가수분해 시료로부터 준비한 카복시메틸화 시료의 특성)

  • This study was performed to evaluate the characteristics of the carboxymethylated substrate from high reactive autohydrolyzed cellulose (HRC) and those of commercial α-cellulose (CAC) and refiner mechanical pulp (RMP). Saccharification rates of HRC substrate were achieved over 70% with 12 hr hydrolysis, about 90% with 24 hr, and 99.5% with 72 hr. CMCase and avicelase activities of cellulase onozuka were 4.09 ㎛ G/mg·min and 14.0 ㎛ G/mg·min, respectively. There were no any significant changes in cellulase activities with this substrate. The saccharification rates of CAC and RMP were very low, 57% and 38% with 72 hr, respectively. Those lignin-zero autohydrolyzed substrates, HRC and CAC, were highly carboxymethylated at the high alkali concentration, near 30%, for 3 hr. reaction, and resulted in 1.13-1.15 of D.S., besides 0.85 of D.S. from RMP. Water solubilities of carboxymethylated substrates were increased with an increase of D.S., 98-98.5% from HRC and CAC and 31.5% from RMP. RMP which has low specific surface area showed lower water retention values, compared to high values of 435 and 321% from CAC and HRC, respectively. There were no direct relationship between surface area and swelling ratio of the substrates.

Influence of Green Tea Powder on the Physical Properties of the Bread Flour and Dough Rheology of White Pan Bread (녹차분말 첨가가 소맥분의 물리적 특성과 제빵적성에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine physical properties of the addition of green tea powder on bread flour and dough rheology of white pan bread. Three levels(0.1, 0.5 and 1.0% ) of each green tea powder with bread flour were tested for their effects in dough mixing using rapid disco analyzer, alveogram and farinogram. Addition of green tea powder tended to reduce initial pasting temperature and increase peak viscosity, break down and set back. L(extensibility) and G(swelling index) value in alveogram showed decrement with increasing green tea powder. These meant that the volume of white pan bread would show same tendency. The use of green tea powder increased consistency and water absorption of the bread flour but decreased development time, salability and degree of softening on farinogram. White pan bread with green tea powder had higher value of hardness and springness than without it. Sensory evaluation determined that the white pan bread with 0.5% green tea powder had the highest score.

Study on Material Characteristics and Conservation Methods for Tracksite of Cretaceous Dinosaurs and Pterosaurs of Jeongchon area in Jinju, Korea (진주 정촌면 백악기 공룡·익룡발자국 화석산지의 재질특성 및 보존 방안 연구)

  • The Tracksite of Cretaceous Dinosaurs and Pterosaurs in Jeongchon, Jinju was discovered in late 2017 during the construction of the Ppuri industry complex. This site is a natural heritage site with a high paleontological value, as it preserves fossils of various types of dinosaurs, pterosaurs, and animal traces at a dense concentration. In this study, we surveyed that physical weathering such as joint, crack, scaling, exfoliation, and fragmentation occurred through field research in the fossil site, and conducted basic research on conservation science to reduce the damage. To this end, among the eight levels identified after excavation, the rocks of Level 3, which yielded a large number of theropod footprint fossils, and Level 4, which yielded pterosaur footprint fossils, were analyzed for material characteristics and evaluation of the effectiveness of consolidation and adhesion. This results showed that the rocks in the Level 3 stratum were dark gray siltstone and the rocks in the Level 4 stratum were dark gray shale, which contained a large amount of calcite and were composed of quartz, plagioclase, mica, alkali feldspar, and other clay minerals, which are likely to be damaged by rainfall under external conditions. As a result of conducting an artificial weathering experiment by dividing the probationary sample into four groups: untreated, consolidation treatment, anti-swelling treatment, and adhesive treatment, the consolidation and the swelling inhibitor showed an effect immediately after treatment, but did not show a blocking effect under a freezing-thawing environment. The adhesive showed that the adhesive effect was maintained even under freezing-thawing conditions. In order to preserve the fossil sites at Jeongchon in the future, in addition to temporary measures to block the inflow of moisture, practical measures such as the construction of protective facilities should be prepared.
