The porosity of polyester fibers treated with sodium hydroxide aqueous solution was investigated using a nitrogen porosimeter, and the dyeability of the treated fibers was discussed in terms of the porosity. In pore distribution, the polyester fibers treated with sodium hydroxide aqueous solution were characterized by higher amount of pores below $10\AA$ than those of the untreated fibers, and by shift of the pore size having maximum accumulated volume from $10\AA$ for the untreated fibers to $5~6\AA$. As the weight loss of the polyester fibers treated with sodium hydroxide aqueous solution increased, BET surface area and total pore volume increased linearly, but average pore size, showing some different aspect, increased steeply at earlier stage and then approached the maximum value. The dye uptakes of the polyester fibers treated with sodium hydroxide aqueous solution increased with the BET surface area, the total pore volume and the average pore size. The alkali treatment increased the surface area of polyester fibers, so that the chance of contact between the fiber and dye molecules increased. In addition, the pores created on the surface of polyester fibers by alkali treatment might act as pathways for dye molecules into the polyester fibers.

The effects of alkaline treatment on the WRV, crystalline structure and sheet structure of softwood and hardwood bleached kraft pulp were investigated. Sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate were used as chemicals for alkaline treatment and two levels of alkali dosage (5%, 10%) were applied respectively. Alkali treated and untreated pulp were refined to three levels (550, 450 and 350 mL CSF). WRV of the alkali treated pulps depended on the alkaline type and concentration. It was found that the crystalline structures of softwood and hardwood pulp were not changed by refining. Sodium carbonate and lower concentration of sodium hydroxide treatment did not caused any modification of cellulose crystalline structure, while higher concentration of sodium hydroxide treatment caused the partial modification of cellulose crystalline structure. Alkaline treatment of hardwood bleached kraft pulp led to the shrinkage of fiber diameter and bulky structure of sheet. Alkaline treatment of softwood bleached kraft pulp did not cause the significant change in fiber shrinkage and bulk of sheet.
This study was performed in order to obtain the effect of the compressive strength of the cured product with manufacturing conditions (amounts of fine aggregate and different types of alkali activator). Material which is the basis of the cured product was used for the blast furnace slag, which has a latent hydraulic activity. Consequently, when using sodium hydroxide as the alkali activator, it is possible to obtain a higher compressive strength than using the calcium hydroxide. And also, it can be added a 10% of fine aggregate with blast furnace slag to improve the compressive strength.

Strength model for blasted furnace slag mortar blended with sodium was investigated in this study. The main parameters of AAS (alkali activated slag) mortar were dosage of alkali activator, water to binder ratio (W/B), and aggregate to binder ratio (A/B). For evaluating the property related to the dosage of alkali activator, sodium carbonate ($Na_2CO_3$) of 4~8% was added to 4% dosage of sodium hydroxide (NaOH). W/B and A/B was varied 0.45~0.60 and 2.05~2.85, respectively. An alkali quality coefficient combining the amounts of main compositions of source materials and sodium oxide ($Na_2O$) in sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate is proposed to assess the compressive strength of alkali activated mortars. Test results clearly showed that the compressive strength development of alkali-activated mortars were significantly dependent on the proposed alkali quality coefficient. Compressive strength development of AAS mortars were also estimated using the formula specified in the previous study, which was calibrated using the collected database. Predictions from the simplified equations showed good agreements with the test results.

The optimum alkali pretreatment parameters (reaction time, reaction temperature and potassium hydroxide concentration) for facilitate the conversion into fermentable sugar (glucose) from steam exploded (severity log Ro 2.45) barley husk were determined using Response Surface Methodology (RSM) based on a factorial Central Composite Design (CCD). The prediction of the response was carried out by a second-order polynomial model and regression analysis revealed that more than 88% of the variation can be explained by the models. The optimum conditions for maximum cellulose content were determined to be 201 min reaction time, $124^{\circ}C$ reaction temperature and 0.9% potassium hydroxide concentration. This data shows that the actual value obtained was similar to the predicted value calculated from the model. The pretreated barley husk using acid hydrolysis resulted in a glucose conversion of 94.6%. This research of steam explosion and alkali pretreatment was a promising method to improve cellulose-rich residue for lignocellulosic biomass.

Nine alkali-activated (AA) mortars were mixed and cured at water or air-dried conditions to explore the significance and limitation for the application of the combination of Ba and Ca ions as an alkali-activator. Ground granulated blast-furnace slag (GGBS) was used for source materials, and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) and barium hydroxide (Ba(OH)2) were employed as alkali activators. Test results clearly showed that the water curing condition was more effective than the air-dried curing condition for the formation of the denser calcium silicate hydrate (C-S-H) gels that had a higher molar Si/Ca ratio, resulting in a higher strength development. At the same time, the introduction of Ba(OH)2 led to the formation of 2CaO·Al2O3·SiO2·8H2O (C2ASH8) hydrates with higher molar Si/Al and Ca/Al ratios. Based on the test results, it can be concluded that the developed cementless mortars have highly effective performance and high potential as an eco-friendly sustainable building material.
The effect of steam explosion coupled with alkali (1% sodium hydroxide, 1% potassium hydroxide and 15% sodium carbonate) or organosolv solvent (85% methanol, 70% ethanol and dioxane) on the production of sugar, changes in the chemical composition of M. sinensis were evaluated. The steam explosion coupled with 1% potassium hydroxide and dioxane were better as compared with other treatments based on the removals of acid insoluble lignin, and about 89.0% and 85.4%. Enzymatic hydrolysis of steam explosion with 1% potassium hydroxide and dioxane treated M. sinensis, gave a 98.0% and 96.5% of glucose conversion, respectively. These results suggested that pretreatment of M. sinensis with either potassium hydroxide or dioxane could be a promising pretreatment method for glucose production.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of alkali-washing with different sodium hydroxide concentrations on the chemical compositions of steam-treated Betung bamboo strand. Strands were subjected to steam treatment at 126 ℃ for 1 h under 0.14 MPa pressure and followed by washing with 1-5% sodium hydroxide solution for 30 sec. The alteration of structural and non-structural chemical components content of bamboo strands was evaluated. Steam and washing treatments with various concentrations of sodium hydroxide solution considerably reduced the extractive content of bamboo strands, and the cell wall chemical components of the strand in the small degree. FTIR analysis showed noticeable changes in peaks related to hemicellulose and lignin. The relative crystallinity increased significantly after steam and washing treatment with sodium hydroxide up to 3% concentration. SEM Images showed smooth and clean strands surface after washing with 3% sodium hydroxide.

The present study concerns the leachability of alkali ions from hardened cement paste in terms of an increase in the pH together with the rate of alkali leaching. To evaluate the influence of mix design on the leaching capacity and rate of alkali, different water-cement ratios (W/C) and binders were used to manufacture paste specimens. The cement paste was made in the form of rectangular bucket where deionised water was subsequently supplied as solvent media. Then the specimen was wrapped in polythene film to avoid contact to atmospheric conditions, which may affect the water chemistry in the bucket. The pH of media was monitored until no further change in the pH value was observed, of which value then used to calculate the leaching capacity and rate. The influence of binder on the pH of solvent is more dominant than that of water to cement ratio: OPC paste produced the highest level of alkali leaching, whilst 30% PFA and 60% GGBS pastes imposed lower level of alkali leaching. After the monitoring of the pH, the inner bucket was ground with an increment of 1.0 mm to measure the leaching influence using the suspension consisting of paste powder and deionised water. It was found that the impact zone for OPC was about 7-8 mm, whilst 30% PFA and 60% GGBS had deeper impact depth of the alkali leaching.
This paper describes the synthesis of alkali metal salts of urea (ureates) and their application to the direct preparation of 4-nitrosoaniline from nitrobenzene via nucleophilic aromatic substitution of hydrogen. Sodium and potassium ureates were readily prepared from the reaction of urea with sodium hydride, metal methoxides, and metal hydroxides. The effect of ureates as nucleophiles on the conversion of nitrobenzene to 4-nitrosoaniline was investigated and compared with that of a urea-metal hydroxide mixture. It was found that the ureates were superior for producing 4-nitrosoaniline owing to their higher thermal stability of the ureate. The ureate obtained from the treatment of urea with sodium hydride gave the highest yield for the preparation of 4-nitrosoaniline. The ureates generated from the reaction of urea with metal hydroxide also gave high yields of 4-nitrosoaniline. Catalytic hydrogenation of 4-nitrosoaniline afforded polymer-grade 1,4-benzenediamine in quantitative yield.
