This research is to reconstruction of railway alignment using GPS data, an investigation is made on the method of optimum simplification for reduction of unnecessary linear data, improve the accuracy by using four simplification algorithms among the methods. By applying two measured of displacement between observed data and it's simplification methods have been evaluated. The results showed that the complexities of lines is not practical to investigate simplification algorithms, the Douglas-Peucker method produced a little displacement between observed data and it's simplification. Its by using the Douglas-Peucker method to observed linear GPS data in railway track, design elements of horizontal alignment have been calculated. Then we could know that obtain the good results fur reconstruction of alignment elements through the methods and algorithns of this study.

The result of the line simplification algorithm varies with the choice of algorithms, the change in tolerance and the selection of target objects. Three of the algorithms used in this study are Sleeve-fitting, Visvalingam-Whyatt, and Bend-simplify. They were applied to the three kinds of objects which were buildings, rivers, and roads with the five degrees of the tolerance. Through this experiments the vector displacement, the areal displacement, and the angular displacement were measured and the qualitative analysis was performed with the trend line of the errors. The experimental results show that errors were differ from tolerance values, and characteristics of line simplification algorithms based on changes of tolerance were understood.
We consider a possible generalization of nondeterministic finite automata. The goals of this consideration are: to apply some obtained algorithms for various problems of minimization of classical nondeterministic automata; to use such automata for describing practical anytime algorithms for the same problems of minimization; to simplify some proofs for algorithms of simplification for usual nondeterministic automata.

The quadratic error metric (QEM) algorithm has been frequently used for simplification of triangular surface models that utilize the vertex-pair algorithm. Simplified models obtained using such algorithms present the advantage of smaller storage capacity requirement compared to the original models. However, a number of cases exist where significant features are lost geometrically, and these features can generally be preserved by utilizing the advantages of the curvature-weighted algorithm. Based on the vertex-based geometric features, a method capable of preserving the geometric features better than the previous algorithms is proposed in this work. To validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, a simplification experiment is conducted using several models. The results of the experiment indicate that the geometrically important features are preserved well when a local feature is present and that the error is similar to those of the previous algorithms when no local features are present.

In the mobile environments for the vector map services, a map simplification work through the map generalization steps helps improve the readability of the map on a large scale. The generalization operations are various such as selection, aggregation, simplification, displacement, and so on, the formal operation algorithms have not been built yet. Because the algorithms require deep special knowledge and heuristic, which make it hard to automate the processes. This thesis proposes some map generalization algorithms specialized in mobile vector map services, based on previous works. We will show the detail to adapt the approaches on the mobile environment, to display complex spatial objects efficiently on the mobile devices which have restriction on the resources

Mesh model generated from 3D reconstruction usually comes with lots of noise, which challenges the performance and robustness of mesh simplification approaches. To overcome this problem, we present a novel method for mesh simplification which could preserve structure and improve the accuracy. Our algorithm considers both the planar structures and linear features. In the preprocessing step, it automatically detects a set of planar structures through an iterative diffusion approach based on Region Seed Growing algorithm; then robust linear features of the mesh model are extracted by exploiting image information and planar structures jointly; finally we simplify the mesh model with plane constraint QEM and linear feature preserving strategies. The proposed method can overcome the known problem that current simplification methods usually degrade the structural characteristics, especially when the decimation is extreme. Our experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method, compared to other simplification algorithms, can effectively improve the quality of mesh and yield an increased robustness on noisy input mesh.

Recently needs for the convergence of CAD and GIS data are increasing, and many studies on converting two systems to each other are being carried out. In this study, to revise and update the building data of digital map using CAD data for construction, the outline of building is abstracted from the CAD data and the outline is generalized to the same level of detail with the building data of digital map. Several line simplification algorithms to generalize the outline are adopted and compared, especially at the view of satisfaction to the drawing rule for digital map. Douglas-Peucker algorithm, Lang's algorithm, Reumann-Witkam algorithm, and Opheim algorithm are applied as the line simplification method. To evaluate the results of these algorithms, visual assessment and variation ratio of the number of points, total length of lines, the area of polygon, and satisfaction ratio to the drawing rule of digital map are analyzed. The result of Lang algorithm and Douglas-Peucker algorithm show superior satisfaction ratio. But general satisfaction ratio is 50~60% for all algorithm. Therefore there seems to be a limit to use these algorithms for the simplification method to update the building data in digital map and it is necessary to develop line simplification algorithm which satisfy the drawing rule well.

There has been proposed many simplification algorithms for effectively decreasing large-volumed polygonal surface data. These algorithms apply their own cost function for collapse to one of fundamental simplification unit, such as vertex, edge and triangle, and minimize the simplification error occurred in each simplification steps. Most of cost functions adopted in existing works use the error estimation method based on distance optimization. Unfortunately, it is hard to define the local characteristics of surface data using distance factor alone, which is basically scalar component. Therefore, the algorithms cannot preserve the characteristic features in surface areas with high curvature and, consequently, loss the detailed shape of original mesh in high simplification ratio. In this paper, we consider the vector component, such as surface orientation, as one of factors for cost function. The surface orientation is independent upon scalar component, distance value. This means that we can reconsider whether or not to preserve them as the amount of vector component, although they are elements with low scalar values. In addition, we develop a simplification algorithm based on half-edge collapse manner, which use the proposed cost function as the criterion for removing elements. In half-edge collapse, using one of endpoints in the edge represents a new vertex after collapse operation. The approach is memory efficient and effectively applicable to the rendering system requiring real-time transmission of large-volumed surface data.

In GIS area, many line simplification algorithms are studied among generalization methods used for making the building data in the form of digital map from the original line data. On the other hand, there are few studies on the simplification algorithm considering the drawing rules of the digital map in Korea. In this paper, the line simplification algorithm based on the drawing rules is proposed as the methodology to create or update the building data of digital map by extracting the building outline from the CAD data used in construction. To confirm the usefulness of the algorithm, this algorithm and four other effective and general line simplification algorithms (e.g., Douglas-Peucker algorithm) are applied to the same building outlines. Then, the five algorithms are compared on five criteria, the satisfaction degree of the drawing rules, shape similarity, the change rate of the number of points, total length of lines, and the area of polygon. As a result, the proposed algorithm shows the 100% of satisfaction degree to the drawing rules. Also, there is little loss in four other mentioned criteria. Thus, the proposed algorithm in this paper is judged to be effective in updating the building data in digital map with construction drawings.
