Bubble behaviors in two-phase flows have been analyzed by tomography methods such as an algebraic reconstruction technique (ART) and a multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique (MART). Initially, a bubbly flow and an annular flow have been investigated by cross-sectional view using computer synthesized phantoms. Two tomography methods have been compared to obtain more accurate results of the two-phase flows. Then, reconstruction of three-dimensional density distributions of phantoms with two and three bubbles have been accomplished by the MART method which provided the better results for the two-dimensional reconstructions accurately to analyze the bubble behaviors in the two-phase flow.
Tomography has been investigated to observe bubble behaviors in two-phase flows. A bubbly flow and an annular flow have been reconstructed by tomography methods such as an algebraic reconstruction technique (ART) and a multiplicative algebraic reconstruction technique (MART) . Computer synthesized phantom fields have been used to calculate asymmetric density distributions for limited cases of 3, 5, and 7 projection angles. As a result of comparison of two tomography methods, the MART method has shown a significant improvement in the reconstruction accuracy for analysis of the two-phase flows.
This work shows that it is possible to obtain information about more than one parameter from acoustic field information. A variety of ultrasonic Lamb wave modes were utilized to reconstruct thickness and density of an isotropic plate. An image reconstruction of one parameter (thickness of a plate) was carried out for four cases, i.e., the lowest symmetrical and anti symmetrical modes, and the fastest symmetrical and anti symmetrical Lamb waves among multiple modes. For two parameter reconstructions (thickness and density), the image processing was performed using the lowest symmetrical and antisymmetrical modes simultaneously. In this work, a modified version of algebraic reconstruction technique (ART), which is a form of finite-series expansion method, was employed to reconstruct the ultrasonically computed tomographic images. Results from several sample geometries are presented.

Computed tomography has widely been used to diagnose patient disease, and patient dose also increase rapidly. To reduce the patient dose by CT, various techniques have been applied. The iterative reconstruction is used in view of image reconstruction. Image quality of the reconstructed section image through algebraic reconstruction technique, one of iterative reconstruction methods, was examined by the normalized root mean square error. The computer program was written with the Visual C++ under the parallel beam geometry, Shepp-Logan head phantom of $512{\times}512$ size, projections of 360, and detector-pixels of 1,024. The forward and backward projection was realized by Joseph method. The minimum NRMS of 0.108 was obtained after 10 iterations in the regularization parameter of 0.09-0.12, and the optimum image was obtained after 8 and 6 iterations for 0.1% and 0.2% noise. Variation of optimum value of the regularization parameter was observed according to the phantom used. If the ART was used in the reconstruction, the optimal value of the regularization parameter should be found in the case-by-case. By finding the optimal regularization parameter in the algebraic reconstruction technique, the reconstruction time can be reduced.

Inspection and shape measurement of three-dimensional objects are widely needed in industries for quality monitoring and control. A number of visual or optical technologies have been successfully applied to measure three-dimensional surfaces. However, those conventional visual or optical methods have inherent shortcomings such as occlusion and variant surface reflection. X-ray vision system can be a good solution to these conventional problems, since we can extract the volume information including both the surface geometry and the inner structure of any objects. In the x-ray system, the surface condition of an object, whether it is lambertian or specular, does not affect the inherent characteristics of its x-ray images. In this paper, we propose a three-dimensional x-ray imaging method to reconstruct a three dimensional structure of an object out of two dimensional x-ray image sets. To achieve this by the proposed method, two or more x-ray images projected from different views are needed. Once these images are acquired, the simultaneous algebraic reconstruction technique(SART) is usually utilized. Since the existing SART algorithms have several shortcomings such as low performance in convergence and different convergence within the reconstruction volume of interest, an advanced SART algorithm named as USART(uniform SART) is proposed to avoid such shortcomings and improve the reconstruction performance. Because, each voxel within the volume is equally weighted to update instantaneous value of its internal density, it can achieve uniform convergence property of the reconstructed volume. The algorithm is simulated on various shapes of objects such as a pyramid, a hemisphere and a BGA model. Based on simulation results the performance of the proposed method is compared with that of the conventional SART method.
This paper proposes an improved ART (Algebraic Reconstruction technique) algorithm. This algorithm is an iterative one with iteration sequence criteria based on the discrepancy between measurement and pseudo-projection data. The simulation result using the proposed algorithm shows a significant improvement in convergency rate over the conventional ART algorithm.
We produced the electron density distribution in the ionosphere over South Korea using the data from nine permanent GPS (Global Positioning System) stations which have been operated by KASI (Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute). The dual-frequency GPS receiver data was used to precisely estimate the electron density in the ionosphere and we obtained the precise electron density profile based on two-dimensional TEC (Total Electron Contents). We applied ART (Algebraic Reconstruction Technique), which is one of the most commonly used algorithms to develop the tomography model. This paper presented the electron density distribution over South Korea with time. We compared with the electron density profiles derived from the GPS tomography reconstruction, Ionosonde measurement data obtained by observations, and the IRI-2001 values. As a result, the electron density profile by GPS reconstruction was in excellent agreement with the electron density profile obtained by Ionosonde measurement data.

As a potential approach for non-destructive testing of concrete structures, we evaluate the time-of-flight (TOF) ultrasound tomography technique In conventional X ray tomography, the reconstructed Image corresponds to the internal attenuation coefficient However, in TOF ultrasound tomography, the reconstructed Image is proportional to the retractive index of the medium Because refractive effects are minimal for X-rays, conventional reconstruction techniques are applied to reconstruct the Image in X-ray tomography However, since ultrasound travels in curved path, due to the spatial variations in the refractive index of the medium, the path must be known to correctly reconstruct the Image. Algorithm for determining the ultrasound path is developed from a Geometrical Optics point view and the image reconstruction algorithm, since the paths are curved It requires the algebraic approach, namely the ART or the SIRT Here, the difference between the computed and the measured TOP data is used as a basis, for the iteration process First the initial image is reconstructed assuming straight paths. It then updates the path based on the recently reconstructed image This process of reconstruction and path determination repeats until convergence The proposed algorithm is evaluated by computer simulations, and in addition is applied to a real concrete structure.

Medical image acquisition techniques such as CT and MRI have disadvantages in that the numerous time and efforts are needed. Furthermore, a great amount of radiation exposure is an inherent proberty of the CT imaging technique, a number of side-effects are expected from such method. To improve such conventional methods, a number of novel methods that can obtain 3D medical images from a few X-ray images, such as algebraic reconstruction technique (ART), have been developed. Such methods deform a generic model of the internal body part and fit them into the X-ray images to obtain the 3D model; the initial shape, therefore, affects the entire fitting process in a great deal. From this fact, we propose a novel method that can generate a 3D vertebraic generic model based on the statistical database of CT scans in this study. Moreover, we also discuss a method to generate patient-tailored generic model using the facts obtained from the statistical analysis. To do so, the mesh topologies of CT-scanned 3D vertebra models are modified to be identical to each other, and the database is constructed based on them. Furthermore, from the results of a statistical analysis on the database, the tendency of shape distribution is characterized, and the modeling parameters are extracted. By using these modeling parameters for generating the patient-tailored generic model, the computational speed and accuracy of ART can greatly be improved. Furthermore, although this study only includes an application to the C1 (Atlas) vertebra, the entire framework of our method can be applied to other body parts generally. Therefore, it is expected that the proposed method can benefit the various medical imaging applications.
