In Mujoo area, the granitic pegmatites are developed in the granitic gneiss complex with Jurassic gneissic granites, where Nb-Ta mineralization were reported. Pegmatites are mainly composed of large crystals of quartz, feldspars of end-member orthoclase and albite, and muscovite. Nb-Ta minerals in study area are columbite (Nb > Ta) in composition. Chemistry of muscovites shows post-magmatic in origin and they are closely related with columbite. Large columbite, in pegmatites occurred with quartz and feldspars, while microcrystalline columbite is associated with muscovite. The Nb contents in large columbite are relatively higher than those in microcrystalline ones. Two pegmatites, 4~15 m in width and 120 m, 250 m in extension respective1y, are developed. Five drilling cores with total 600 m in length are finally obtained and revealed no possible potential for economic rare metals of Na-Ta deposits.

Borosilicate glass was prepared in the composition of 81% $SiO_2$, 4% $Na_2O$, 2% $Al_2O_3$, 13% $B_2O_3$. The albite phase($NaAlSi_3O_8$) increased with the $ZrO_2$(0~10wt.%) addition. For measurement of glass transition temperature($T_g$), crystallization temperature($T_{c,max}$) measured by differential thermal analysis. The $T_g$ and $T_{c,max}$ were $510{\sim}530^{\circ}C$$650{\sim}670^{\circ}C$, respectively. The crystallized glass was heated at various conditions(temperature, time). After nucleation at $550^{\circ}C$ for 2hours prior to crystal growth at $650^{\circ}C$ for 4hours, the resulting Vickers hardness, fracture toughness and bending strength were about $736H_v$, $1.0779MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, and 493MPa, which were 17%, 45% and 149% higher than parent borosilicate glass, respectively. Crystal size and transmittance of crystallized borosilicate glass were analyzed by FE-SEM, EDX and UV-VIS-NIR spectrophotometer. Transmittance of crystallized borosilicate glass was decreased with increasing $ZrO_2$(wt%) at visible-range. The results prove that light-weight bulletproof can be fabricated by the crystallization of borosilicate glass.
Geopolymers were synthesized using raw materials produced from two different areas: one was from Indonesia and the other was from Habcheon, Korea. The constituting phases of the Indonesian raw material were quartz and kaolinite, while those of the Habcheon sample were quartz, halloysite and albite. They were both calcined at $750^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours, and solution of NaOH and water glass was added to activate the geopolymeric reaction. The compressive strength of geopolymer synthesized from the Indonesian raw material showed a low value of $151\;kgf/cm^2$ after curing for 28 days. However, it could be greatly increased by adding blast furnace slag powders of $1188\;kgf/cm^2$ and $1969\;kgf/cm^2$ at 20 wt% and 40 wt% additions, respectively. The compressive strength of the geopolymer synthesized from the Habcheon raw material was high, at $557\;kgf/cm^2$, after 28 days, and the very high early-stage (3 days) strength of $556\;kgf/cm^2$ for this sample was remarkable. Commercially available Habcheon metastate raw material, of which composition showed low CaO and $Na_2O$ contents compared to the calcined Habcheon raw material, was also examined. It was found that the compressive strength of the commercial metastate type was nearly identical to that of the calcined Habcheon raw material except for the relatively low value at an early curing stage and at a high curing temperature of $60^{\circ}C$.
Twelve Punchong sherds collected in Hakbongni, Kongju where the well known iron-painted on white slip were manufactured from late 15C to early 16C were analyzed for their composition and microstructure. The composition of the body was analyzed by X-ray fluorescence and that of glaze by electron probe micro-analyzer. Microstructure was observed by optical microscope, polarizing microscope, EPMA, and X-ray diffractometer. The results of composition of body and glaze of Hakbongni were compared with those of Punchong from Yongsuri, Boryong which was close to Hakbongni. The composition of body and glaze of these two areas were compared by principal component analysis using SPSS program. Hakbongni bodies have higher silica and flux materials but lower alumina and their glaze have higher silica, soda, iron oxide but lower alumina, calcia. Hakbongni punchong itself is divided into two groups. Their glaze is lime type. There are many remnant minerals, such as quartz, large feldspar mass with partially melted surrounding area, albite, biotite, and iron-oxide. From such a microstructure we can assume that preparation of raw material was rather crude and firing temperature quite low. Iron-painted material is identified as Mg/Fe/Al spinel by composition analysis and XRD pattern.
Separation process of heavy minerals was performed with sand from Dunjang beach of Jaeundo, Shinangun, Chonnam, and the feasibility study separating heavy minerals was carried out, and their properties were studied. Samples were selected in three parts, which were upper part, middle part and lower part, with depth. Samples of heavy mineral groups separated with the spiral separator were chosen as starting materials, and they were separated with 3 times of table separation. Heavy minerals presenting in this area were ilmenite, zircon, rutile, anatase, monazite, and xenotime. In the results of 3 times of table separation, minor content of quartz, orthoclase, albite and muscovite were existed as gangue minerals. Accordingly, we concluded that additional specific gravity separation was needed. In the results of separation of heavy minerals by hand picking, it was confirmed that heavy minerals had various genesis because of their various roundness and color.
Fe compounds of volcanic basalt samples distributed at the Hantan riverside in Cheorwon were investigated by means of X-ray diffractometry (XRD), X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRF) and $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectroscopy. We found that samples were typical basic rock which consisted of augite, anorthite, albite and sanidine etc. They had the total amount of iron compounds including hematite (${\alpha}-Fe_2O_3$) varies from 6.20 w% to 12.8 w% depending on the different regions by XRF. The $M{\ddot{o}}ssbauer$ spectra of the samples were consisted of three doublets. The balance state of Fe ions of all samples were chiefly $Fe^{2+}$, and $Fe^{2+}/Fe^{3+}$ ratios were 2.27~3.42.

In this study, characteristics of sediments and suspended solids flowing into Andong and Imha Dam was analyzed by color, X-ray diffraction and ICP/MS analysis. The minerals of sediments and suspended solid consist mainly of quartz, albite, chlorite, illite and small amounts of montmorillonite and kaolinite. Unlike the Andong Dam, the Imha Dam sediments contain large amounts of calcite. Color of sediments and suspended solids varies from grayish brown to dark orange. The concentrations of major heavy metals of sediments and suspended solids in the Andong and the Imha Dam are higher than the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration standard values. The concentration of heavy metals in sediments of Andong is higher than that of Imha Dam because concentration of heavy metals in the suspended solid flowing into Andong is higher than that of Imha Dam.
Asian dust (Hwangsa) deposited on the surface of the Korean Peninsula is difficult to recognize their existence in mountainous terrain undergoing active erosion and weathering. This study examined Asian dust sediments mixed in soils by analysing clay mineralogy, mineral composition, and microtextures of fine silt (< 20 ㎛) in the alkali feldspar granite area of Seoraksan. The fine silt was composed of detrital particles derived from bedrocks, Asian dust sediments, and their weathering products. Clay minerals of 2:1 structural type, chlorite, amphibole, epidote, and Ca-bearing plagioclase were identified as eolian mineral particles. During the weathering of the bedrock composed of quartz and alkali feldspars, albite was partially weathered to produce small amounts of gibbsite and kaolin minerals. Hydroxy-Al interlayered clay minerals were formed by the exchange and fixation of polynuclear Al cationic species into the interlayers of expandable 2:1 clay minerals dominated by illite-smectite series clay minerals. Contribution of Asian dust to the fine silt of soils was estimated around 70% on the basis of total contents of 2:1 phyllosilicates.
The Kimhae napseok clay deposit was studied to characterize its mineralogy and genesis. Geology of the deposit is composed of Tertiary volcanic rocks and granodiorite. Tertiary volcanic rocks consist of andesitic tuff with minor interstratified tuffaceous shale, and rhyodacitic tuff. The main ore body of 2.4 to 4 m in thickness developed parallel to the bedding of andesitic tuff bed. Its strike and dip are $N70^{\circ}E-N85^{\circ}E$ and $16^{\circ}NW-32^{\circ}NW$, respectively. Two alteration zones; the propylitic zone of albite-epidote-chlorite-quartz assemblage and advanced argillic zone of pyrophyllite-dickite-alunite-diaspore assemblage are developed. Correlation of $SiO_2$ to $Al_2O_3$ shows no relation in propylitic zone, while a negative linear relation in advanced argillic zone. Chemical variation shows that $SiO_2$, $Al_2O_3$, MgO, CaO, $Na_2O$ and $K_2O$ were leached out during hydrothermal alteration. Pyrophyllite, the most abundant mineral in advanced argillic zone, occurs as low temperature 2M polytype. It is closely associated with dickite, diaspore and alunite. The Hinckley index of dickite is 0.83 showing moderate crystallinity. Na content is increasing in the M site with the increasing content of cations in the R-site. the mole percent of Na replacing K in alunite ranges from 53.2 to 71.6. It is also found that pyrophyllite grows in the dissolution site of diaspore. Plagioclase was albitized. Lowering of pH caused mainly by sulfide and sulfate decomposition resulted in preferential leaching of Si. It is inferred that aluminum released from plagioclase in the volcanic rocks as well as from the tuffaceous shale intercalated in andesitic tuff were the main sources of aluminum required for the formation of clay deposit. pH in hydrothermal fluid decreased from propylitic zone to advanced argillic zone with increasing degree of alteration. Based on experimental data reported in the literature and mineral assemblages, the formation temperature of the deposit ranges 270 to $320^{\circ}C$.
The variation of Na(A), K, Na(M4), A l O and Al(VI)+Fe3++Ti+Cr in the zonal amphiboles from the amphibolites of the Hwanggangri area indicates that the tschermakite-, edenite- and glaucophane substitutions are higher in the rim than in the core, in which actinolite changes to hornblende with going outward from core to rim. The contents of substitutional elements of hornblende~ of three samples@l29-2, M76-2, M78), which include diopside and greenish brown hornblende and are thought to represent the highest metamorphic grade, are lower than those of rim homblendes of the lower metamorphic grade and are higher than those of core actinolite that they conform to the middle domain in those of the whole amphiboles. Considerations about the origin of zonal amphiboles are as follows. Firstly, two samples(R102-1, R210-9) have the same amphibole composition like core is actinolitic hornblende, and rim is magnesian hastingsite although plagioclases such as albite(R102-1) and labradorite (R210-9) show the wide compositional difference. It is impossible to produce both albite and labradorite by one metamorphic event. Judging from this wide compositional difference, the existence of zonal amphiboles does not indicate the miscibility gap but is thought to be the result of the polymetamorphism. Secondly, the crystallographically sharp and gradational interfaces between actinolite and hornblende fonned in the amphibolites rgardless of the distance from the granite. In case of the samples(R210-9, M128, M130) having the sharp interface between two amphiboles, the plagioclase show the compositions produced at the low grade and the medium grade. Because such variable compositions of plagioclase indicates the overprinting of metamorphism of higher metamorphic grade than that of the formation of miscibility gap, it implies that zonal amphiboles were formed by polymetarnorphism. In case of the gradational interface between two amphiboles, this texture is also thought to be the effect of polymetamorphism from the fact that this texture mainly occur near the granite and from the consideration of the metamporphic grade. The relationship between the compositional variations of the amphiboles and the pressure types of metamorphism suggests that actinolitic core is considered to be grown by the metamorphism of medium pressure, while hornblende rim is shown to have genetic relations with the metamorphism of low pressure type.
