  • Purpose - Port is vital for international trade accounting for approximately 80% of world cargo transportation in the global trade sector. Air pollutants emitted owing to the related industry interfaces developed around the port spread throughout the dense population region can have harmful effects on the nearby residents. This study aims to analyze high-concentration diffusion pattern by air pollutants, considering the main management periods by air pollutants. Design/methodology - Employing the concentration criteria per main air pollutant, the analyses of concentration change patterns per air pollutant, wind characteristics that directly affected the air pollutant diffusion, distribution types per air pollutant, and high-concentration diffusion patterns by season according to time changes were conducted. Findings - The substances that caused harmful levels of air pollution in the hinterland living zone of the Busan New Port were PM_10, PM_2.5, and NO_2. Furthermore, the intensive management periods were as follows: For PM_10, 24-h (spring), 12:00-16:00 (summer), 12:00-16:00 (summer), 20:00-12:00 (fall), and 24:00-20:00 (winter), and for PM_2.5, 24-h (all four seasons), and for NO_2, 23:00-04:00 (spring), 23:00-08:00 (summer), and 20:00-08:00 (fall), and 23:00-04:00 (winter). Originality/value - Research finding indicates that regular monitoring and countermeasures to reduce air pollution for each air pollutant makes it possible to achieve effective air quality control in the port and hinterland living zones.

  • The compressors in the air conditioner have the role of the pressurization and circulation of the refrigerant. The hermetic reciprocating compressors driven by rotary motor have been used for the air conditioner. The linear compressor has very simple structure and enhancement in the efficiency in comparison to that of conventional reciprocating compressor. The linear compressors are widely used for the small cryogenic refrigerator (below 1 kW), such as the Stirling refrigerator and pulse tube refrigerator. In the cryogenic application, the pressure ratio of the linear compressor is below 1.5, but the linear compressor for the air conditioner should overcome the high pressure ratio and the large pressure difference between the each sides of the piston. The resonance characteristics of the linear compressor has the significant impacts on the power consumption. To minimize the power consumption, the linear compressor should be operated at the resonance point. In the resonance characteristics, the role of the mechanical and gas spring should be considered. In present study, the cycle of the analysis of the vapor compression refrigeration cycle with the different refrigerants (R134a, R4l0a, R600a) and the designs of the linear compressor are performed. The effects of the stiffness of the mechanical spring on the electromagnetic forces would be discussed. Finally, the results show the design specification of the linear compressor for the air conditioner.

  • Several thick board and dimension lumbers of Japanese larch(Larix leptolepis), Dahurian larch(Larix gmelini) and radiata pine(Pinus radiata) air-dried in four different seasons to compare air-drying process. Patterns of air-drying curves were influenced by climatological conditions and limber thickness. The initial drying rates of summer were the highest, followed those of fall, spring and winter. The drying times to equilibrium moisture contents for four seasons were nearly the same except for winter. However, the drying time for winter required twice more time than the other seasons. The drying time of dimension lumbers required 1.3 times more than boards. The final moisture contents were lowest during spring, highest during winter and similar between summer and fall.

  • This research is concerned with the enhancement of heat transfer by surfactant added to the aqueous solution of LiBr. Different vertical tubes were tested with and without an additive of normal octyl alcohol. The test tubes are a bare tube, a groove tube, a corrugated tube and a spring-inserted tube. The additive concentration is about 0.08 mass%. The heat transfer coefficient is measured as a function of the film Reynolds number in the range of 20~200. Experiments are carried out at higher cooling water temperature of $35^{\circ}C$to simulate an air cooling condition for several kinds of absorber testing tubes. The experimental results with and without surfactant are compared. The enhancement of heat transfer by Marangoni convection effect which is generated by addition of the surfactant is observed in each test tube. Especially, it is clarified that the tube with an spring-inserted has the enhancement effect.

  • A set of 1994 data was analyzed to investigate the characteristics of background surface SO$_{2}$ concentrations at Kosan, Cheju Island, Korea. The SO$_{2}$ concentrations at Kosan site show a seasonal variation with a minimum(0.46 ppb) in summer, maximum(1.02 ppb) in spring and an annual mean of 0.83 ppb. These values were 4-7 times higher than those measured in other remote areas, such as Bermuda and Oki Island, but they were similar to the baseline concentrations of other sites in the world. The diurnal variation of SO$_{2}$ concentrations was very small and it shows a peak at 10 am in spring and fall, 2 pm in summer, and 1 pm in winter, respectively. Correlations between local meteorological parameters and SO$_{2}$ concentrations were mot significant. This suggests that the variations of the Kosan's SO$_{2}$ comcentrations were relatively independent on local meteorological variables. Backward trajectory analysis results showed that the seasonal variation of the OS$_{2}$ concentration was mainly due to the inflow of air masses from the continent in spring and from the Pacific Ocean im summer. The results also revealed that the air masses with the highest SO$_{2}$ concentration came through China or the Korea peninsula in spring and through Japan during summer. It was found that the SO$_{2}$ concentrations at Kosan were under the influence of passage of air masses arriving at this site.

  • The chemical and meteorological effects on the concentration variations of ozone ($O_3$) were evaluated based on the intensive air quality measurement (5 pollutants and aromatic volatile organic compounds (AVOCs)) in and out-side an urban valley during spring and summer of 2006. The 5 pollutants measured in the study area include $O_3$, $NO_2$, NO, $PM_{10}$, and CO; the AVOCs include benzene (BEN), toluene (TOL), ethylbenzene (EB), m,p-xylene (MPX), and o-xylene (OX). For the purpose of this study, study areas were classified into two categories: valley area (VA) with a semi-closed topography covering a number of industrial complex, public building, and mountains and non-valley area (NVA) surrounding the suburban and residential areas. In general, the mean concentration levels of most pollutants (except for $PM_{10}$) in the VA were higher than those in the NVA. It was found that the average $O_3$ increase in the VA during spring might result from the combined effects such as the photochemical production from diverse anthropogenic sources and the $O_3$ accumulation due to geographical features (e.g., the semi-closed topography) and wind conditions (e.g., a low wind speed). In addition, the nocturnal $O_3$ increase in the VA during spring was primarily caused by local wind conditions (e.g., mountain and valley winds) with the low wind speed (approximately $1{\sim}2\;m\;s^{-1}$). On the other hand, the $O_3$ difference between the two areas during summer might be because of the photo-chemical production with the $O_3$ precursors (especially the AVOCs) rather than the contribution of wind conditions.

  • The sliding wear behaviors of Zircaloy-4 nuclear fuel rod were investigated using two support springs with convex and concave shapes in room temperature air and water. The main focus is to compare the wear behavior of various test variables such as slip amplitude, environment, contact contours with different spring shape and a number of cycles. The results indicated that wear volume and maximum wear depth increased with slip amplitude in both air and water, but their trends tended to change according to the spring shapes and test environments. In air condition, the wear volume was controlled by wear debris behavior generated on worn surface. As a result, final wear volume and maximum wear depth decreased if a ratio of protruded wear volume to worn area $(D_p)$ would be saturated to specific value. This is because wear particle layer could accommodate large strain by accumulating and transforming wear particle layer. However, in water condition, metal-to metal contact was more dominant and wear volume was greatly affected by changed mechanical behavior between contact surfaces since wear debris should be generated after repeated plastic deformation and fracture. After wear test, worn surfaces were examined using optical microscope and SEM and details of wear mechanism were discussed using a ratio of wear volume to worn area $(D_e)$ at each test condition.

  • An experimental study was performed to evaluate seismic reduction performance and applicability of 3-dimensional floor isolation system to the main control room of nuclear power plant. A friction pendulum system(FPS) and air spring were designed and fabricated for 3-dimensional floor isolation system. Two kind of the partial experimental model of a main control room attached to the FPS and air spring were tested on the shaking table. The experimental model consisted of a control panel, a $2.5m{\times}2.5m$ access floor, four FPS and air springs. The artificial time histories based on the vertical and horizontal floor response spectrums(OBE, SSE) of the main control room were used as the earthquake input signals in the test. Compared to non-isolated system, the seismic response of experimental models using 3-dimensional floor isolation system were shown considerable seismic reduction performance.

  • The Measurement of Pollution in the Troposphere (MOPITT) instrument is an eight-channel gas correlation radiometer that launched on the Earth Observing System (EOS) Terra spacecraft in 1999. Its main objectives are to measure carbon monoxide (CO) and methane (CH4) concentrations in the troposphere. This study analyzes tropospheric carbon monoxide distributions using MOPITT data and compare with ozone distributions in Northeast Asia. In general, seasonal CO variations are characterized by a peak in spring and decrease in summer. Also, this study revealed that the seasonal cycles of CO are maximum in spring and minimum in summer with average concentrations ranging from 118ppbv to 170ppbv. The monthly average of CO shows a similar profile to those of O3. This fact clearly indicates that the high concentration of CO in spring is caused by two possible causes: the photochemical CO production in the troposphere, or the transport of the CO in the northeast Asia. The CO and $O_3$ seasonal cycles in the Northeast Asia are influenced extensively by the seasonal exchange of the different types of air mass due to the Asian monsoon. The continental air masses contain high concentrations of $O_3$ and CO due to higher continental background concentrations and sometimes due to the contribution of regional pollution. In summer the transport pattern is reversed. The Pacific marine air masses prevail over Korea, so that the marine air masses bring low concentrations of CO and $O_3$, which tend to give the apparent minimum in summer.
