A study of temperature profiles in mixing zone of AHU (air handling unit) can contribute greatly to enhance performance of AHU system, so the study on the temperature distribution between RA (return air) and OA (outdoor air) is important to analyze the mixing characteristics in a mixing zone of AHU. Accordingly, the temperature profiles during RA (return air) and OA (outdoor air) supply process into mixing zone of AHU with an air mixer are studied experimentally. The effect of air mixer, OA temperature and RA/OA flow rate are studied in detail. In this study, the results show that the mixing efficiency is all high for installed the air mixer. The more OA temperature increase and OA flow rate decrease, the more mixing efficiency is high.

It is a serous subject for energy conservation to prevent the energy loss caused by the mixture of heated and cooled air jets in perimeter and interior zone of a building operated with tow kinds of air-conditioning system simultaneously. The purpose of this paper is to clarify the quantitative and qualitative mechanisms of mixing loss and to propose a evaluation method for it. By using the dynamic heat load calculation, heat extraction load of a typical office building in Busan are calculated. According to the results, numerical simulations based on CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) were performed in order to evaluate mixing loss in the physical size of HVAC system. Then, the distributions of air temperature and airflow patterns according to the differences of set-point temperature are analyzed to grasp relations how to influence mixing loss.
Air mixing system which is composed of air pressure control system, hot pipe system and air mixer, is the facility for mixing hot air($1000^{\circ}C$, 10kg/s) from storage air heater (SAH) and decompressed air($20^{\circ}C$, 15kg/s) from high pressure air supply system. Air pressure control system reduce the pressure of the air, from 32MPa to 3.5 MPa and supply the decompressed air to air mixer. The hot pipe system supply hot air from SAH to air mixer which mix hot with the decompressed air from air pressure control system. Fully mixed air flow rate is 25kg/s and mixed temperature is up to $400^{\circ}C$. So, we can expand the operating envelop of the supersonic ground test facility to low Mach number and low altitude region.

In this paper, the performance of ventilation equipments in enclosed parking garages were investigated for several air distribution systems by numerical method. Air change effectiveness of the non-mixing system was 0.42. It meant that more supply air as much as the design supply air was needed to maintain good indoor air quality. In the high speed nozzle ventilating system which is most expensive one, air change effectiveness was 0.54. Therefore this system satisfied to ventilation design. In the jet fan ventilating systems, air change effectiveness for jet fan ventilating system-A with 18 jet fans and jet fan ventilating system-B with 6 jet fans in circulation mixing arrangement were 0.565 and 0.42 respectively. Jet fan ventilating system-C with 6 jet fans in transport mixing arrangement was 0.535. Jet fan ventilating system-A and jet fan ventilating system-C met the ventilation design. But velocity in jet fan ventilating system-A was over 2.0m/s which is inappropriate in human comfort. Therefore this system is not proper to ventilation. Jet fan ventilating system-C was the optimum one for enclosed parking garages among 5 systems examined in this paper.

The spray-induced mixing characteristics and thermal decomposition of aqueous urea solution into ammonia have been studied to design optimum sizes and geometries of the mixing chamber in SCR(Selective Catalytic Reduction) system. The cold flow tests about the urea-injection nozzle were performed to clarify the parameters of spray mixing characteristics such as mean diameter and velocity of drops and spray width determined from the interactions between incoming air and injected drops. Discrete particle model in Fluent code was adopted to simulate spray-induced mixing process and the experimental results on the spray characteristics were used as input data of numerical calculations. The simulation results on the spray-induced mixing were verified by comparing the spray width extracted from the digital images with the simulated Particle tracks of injected drops. The single kinetic model was adopted to predict thermal decomposition of urea solution into ammonia and solved simultaneously along with the verified spray model. The hot air generator was designed to match the flow rate and temperature of the exhaust gas of the real engines The measured ammonia productions in the hot air generator were compared with the numerical predictions and the comparison results showed good agreements. Finally, we concluded that the design capabilities for sizing optimum mixing chamber were established.

Air-fuel mixing and flame-holding are two important factors that have to be considered in the design of an injection system. Different injection strategies have been proposed with particular concern for rapid air-fuel mixing and flame-holding. Two representative injection techniques can be applied in a supersonic combustor. One of the simplest approaches is a transverse(normal) injection. The cavity flame holder, an integrated fuel injection/flame-holding approach, has been proposed as a new concept for flame holding and air-fuel mixing in a supersonic combustor. This paper describes numerical efforts to characterize the flame-holding and air-fuel mixing process of a model scramjet engine combustor, where hydrogen is injected into a supersonic cross flow and a cavity. The combustion phenomena in a model scramjet engine, which has been experimentally studied at University of Queensland and Australian National University using a free-piston shock tunnel, were observed around the separation region of the transverse injector upstream and the inside cavity. The results show that this flow separation generates recirculation regions which increase air-fuel mixing. Self-ignition occurs in the separation-freestream and cavity-fteestream interfaces.

This paper aims at suggesting design guidelines for a perimeter-less HVAC system that contributes energy savings. Perimeter-less HVAC system is one that relieves difficulties fuck as handling mixing loss, uneven radiative environment, and maintenance and repair. It prevents heat load gained through window and outdoor wall without modifying a previously equipped building skin system. In this paper, we performed several kinds of CFD (computational fluid dynamics) cases through numerical simulation to obtain an optimized perimeter-less design, and then we conducted a large-scale model experiment to see how the push-pull air flow would handle indoor heat to obtain an optimized perimeter-less design.

In automotive air handling system, mixing of air streams by the cooler and the heater affects the comfort of cabin room. In the present study, computer-aided analysis is done to improve the thermal comfort and for the optimal design of automotive HVAC system. The simulation software used was FLUENT, and complicate geometries were created by three dimensional CAD. Air flow volume, fir distribution rate and temperature controllability and temperature differences between upper and lower discharge air are analyzed through numerical simulation at vent, floor and defrost mode. Also, velocity vector of sirocco fan is investigated through the scroll housing. The velocity vector magnitude is larger at lower region of fan than that at any other regions. Recirculation and disturbance of air is relatively high near the cut-off edge in the scroll housing. By using the results of this study, the time for prototype production can be reduced and timely decisions can be made to determine initial design directions.
Effect of improvement of the dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma system on the inactivation performance of bacteria were investigated. The improvement of plasma reactor was performed by combination with the basic plasma reactor and UV process or combination with the basic plasma reactor and circulation system which was equipped with gas-liquid mixer. Experimental results showed that tailing effect was appeared after the exponential decrease in basic plasma reactor. There was no enhancement effect on the Ralstonia Solanacearum inactivation with combination of basic plasma process and UV process. The application of gas-liquid mixing device on the basic plasma reactor reduced inactivation time and led to complete sterilization. The effect existence of gas-liquid mixing device, voltage, air flow rate (1 ~ 5 L/min), water circulation rate (2.8 ~ 9.4 L/min) in gas-liquid mixing plasma, plasma voltage and UV power of gas-liquid mixing plasma+UV process were evaluated. The optimum air flow rate, water circulation rate, voltage of gas-liquid mixing system were 3 L/min, 3.5 L/min and 60 V, respectively. There was no enhancement effect on the Ralstonia Solanacearum inactivation with combination of gas-liquid mixing plasma and UV process.
