To detect dust-loaded air-mass over land and ocean, we propose an index, which is essentially the difference in Rayleigh-corrected reflectance between 412 and 443 nm bands of SeaWiFS. Radiative transfer simulations are conducted to show that the index is linearly related to the optical thickness of modeled dust-contaminated aerosol while showing insensitivity against non-absorbing model aerosols. Asian SeaWiFS data set of 2001 spring is used to produce daily composite imagery of the index, which compares well with TOMS Aerosol Index and with predicted aerosol optical thickness predicted by CFORS chemical weather forecast.
The real-time monitoring of surface vegetation is essential for the management of droughts, vegetation growth, and water resources. The availability of land cover maps based on remotely collected data makes the monitoring of surface vegetation easier. The vegetation index in an area is likely to be proportional to meteorological elements there such as air temperature and precipitation. This study investigated relationship between vegetation index based on Moderate Resolution Image Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and ground-measured meteorological elements at the Yongdam catchment station. To do this, 16-day averaged data were used. It was found that the vegetation index is well correlated to air temperature but poorly correlated to precipitation. The study provides some intuition and guidelines for the study of the droughts and ecologies in the future.

An indoor air quality index for school classrooms based on the Hazard Quotient (HQ) was developed in this study. The current index (IAQI-S) covered PM10, PM2.5, and CO2, and breakpoints of IAQI-S were calculated using each HQ value. IAQI-S was applied to the real-time data obtained from 123 classrooms of 46 schools during November 2017 to December 2020. As a result of the comprehensive assessment, 93.1% of PM10 and 94% of PM2.5 belonged to 'good' and 'moderate', respectively. The IAQI-S based on an 8-hour predicted moving average was compared with Comprehensive Air-quality Index (CAI) and with the IAQI of a foreign reference. The IAQI-S includes CO2 and consists of more stringent levels comparing to outdoor index (CAI).
Various air indexing and data scheduling schemes for wireless broadcast of spatial data have been developed for energy efficient query processing. The existing schemes are not effective when the clients' data access patterns are skewed to some items. It is because the schemes are based on flat broadcast that does not take the popularity of the data items into consideration. In this paper, thus, we propose a data scheduling scheme letting the popular items appear more frequently on the channel, and grid-based distributed index for non-flat broadcast (GDIN) for window query processing. The proposed GDIN allows quick and energy efficient processing of window query, matching the clients' linear channel access pattern and letting the clients access only the queried data items. The simulation results show that the proposed GDIN significantly outperforms the existing schemes in terms of access time, tuning time, and energy efficiency.
Aluminum thin plate coated with epoxy resin containing about 20wt% brass powder, was applied to fins of heat exchanger. We carried out a series of detailed examinations to evaluate the anti-bacterial performance of the plate and heat exchanger (fan coil unit). In the presence of water or moisture, copper ions which have an anti-bacterial ability eluted from brass powder and showed sufficient effects on many kinds of bacteria. We also evaluated the anti-bacterial performance quantitatively by use of the index API (Anti-bacterial Performance Index) which has already been proposed by authors.
In recent years, the air pollution and Air Quality Index (AQI) has been a pivotal point for researchers due to its effect on human health. Various research has been done in predicting the AQI but most of these studies, either lack dense temporal data or cover one or two air pollutant elements. In this paper, a hybrid Convolutional Neural approach integrated with recurrent neural network architecture (CNN-LSTM), is presented to find air pollution inference using a multivariate air pollutant elements dataset. The aim of this research is to design a robust and real-time air pollutant forecasting system by exploiting a neural network. The proposed approach is implemented on a 24-month dataset from Seoul, Republic of Korea. The predicted results are cross-validated with the real dataset and compared with the state-of-the-art techniques to evaluate its robustness and performance. The proposed model outperforms SVM, SVM-Polynomial, ANN, and RF models with 60.17%, 68.99%, 14.6%, and 6.29%, respectively. The model performs SVM and SVM-Polynomial in predicting O3 by 78.04% and 83.79%, respectively. Overall performance of the model is measured in terms of Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Mean Absolute Percentage Error (MAPE) and the Root Mean Square Error (RMSE).

SAI(Secondary Air Injection) system has been studied widely as one of the promising countermeasure for reducing HC emission at cold start. In this paper, in order to find out the optimal position of SAI, computational thermal fluid analysis on exhaust system adapted SAI system is performed using commercial 3-D CFD code, CFX. The present results showed that SAI position strongly affected the uniformity of air distribution in front of catalyst. And also through the decision process of optimal position of SAI, new index, uniformity of air distribution($U_{\phi}$) is proposed to define it quantitively. Because $U_{\phi}$ is very simple equation and similar with flow uniformity, it is very easy to figure out the physical meaning and to apply it to practices. Finally, we applied the index $U_{\phi}$ to the decision process of the optimal position of SAI, so that we could get the clear comparison results.
This study investigated exposure to air pollutants in rooms in low-income houses at Shomolu (R1), Mafoluku (R2) and Mushin (R3) in Lagos state. The concentrations of most measured exceeded limits of Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) for indoor air quality. Air quality index (AQI) in rooms studied was unhealthy for sensitive people in terms of CO, unhealthy in terms of $SO_2$ and very unhealthy in terms of $NO_2$ while moderate air quality was obtained in terms of $PM_{10}$ in most rooms. High concentrations of carbontetrachloride, formaldehyde and xylene measured could have been responsible for some of the health complaints of the occupants. Factor analysis shows that cooking with kerosene, use of gasoline generator and insecticide were the major contributors to indoor air pollution in these rooms. Therefore, there is need to urgently tackle poverty as all affected by these pollutants were poor who live in substandard houses without kitchens.

In this study, the combined-type diffuser developed by the Authors, in a previous study, was applied to a residential space. The performance of a ventilation and thermal environment, created by the use of a combined-type diffuser was compared to the pan-type diffuser widely used in apartment houses. In cooling conditions, because of the relatively high air flow rate of ceiling cassette-type air conditioners, the characteristics of airflow distribution in a room were governed by the air conditioner's airflow. In heating conditions, because of the low air flow rate of the diffuser, the characteristics of airflow distribution were governed by the buoyancy effect created by cold external walls and a hot floor. In terms of the Air Diffusion Performance Index (ADPI), which is a thermal environmental index, the result of a combined-type diffuser was greater than a pan-type diffuser in both of cooling and heating conditions. Consequently, the combined-type diffuser showed equal or superior ventilation and thermal environment performance compared to a pan-type diffuser.
