Runoff and nutrient concentrations were monitored to identify pollutant load characteristics of a subwatershed in the Jooam lake. Observed concentrations of T-N and T-P were $1.445{\sim}3.980mg/{\ell}\;and\;0{\sim}0.273mg/{\ell}$, respectively. Runoff load of T-N, T-P by single storm occurred June 24th 2001 contributed 55% of T-N and 41% T-P of total pollutant load during study period.
The long-term monitoring of the Soyang Lake's water quality, covering 25% of the North Han River watershed, is crucial for effective management of both lake water quality and pollution sources in the broader region. This study utilized continuous monitoring data from the front of the Soyang Dam spanning 2003 to 2022, aiming to analyze trends and provide foundational insights for water quality management. Results revealed a slightly poor grade (IV) for total nitrogen (T-N) in both surface and mid-depth layers, indicating a need for concentrated T-N management. Trend analyses using the Mann-Kendall test and Sen's Slope depicted a decreasing trend in total phosphorus (T-P) for both layers, attributed to non-point source pollution reduction projects initiated after the Soyang Lake's designation as a pollution control area in 2007. The LOWESS analysis showed a T-P increase until 2006, followed by a decrease, influenced by the impact of Typhoon Ewiniar in that year. This 20-year overview establishes a comprehensive understanding of the Soyang Lake's water quality and trends, allowing for a seasonal and periodical analysis of water quality changes. The findings underscore the importance of continued monitoring and management strategies to address evolving water quality issues in the Soyang Lake over time.
Saemangeum development project is the world's largest tidal flat reclamation project. It is currently under construction, and proceeding with phased developments. The construction of agricultural areas within the Saemangeum reclamed lands is also a part of this project. These areas will have multi-functional complexes aiming to produce mainly eco-friendly horticultural crops and livestock products for the purpose of export. The major concern is to obtain sufficient water with appropriate quality to supply to those areas. The objective of this study is therefore to provide available water supply plans for agricultural purpose, especially for horticulture and livestock complexes. Alternative methods for water supply are purifying water from the Saemangenm lake or using water supply services providing by K-water or local governments. This study investigates to find an economical water supply plan through comparisons of these methods. As a result, the water purification method with Saemangeum lake water could be advantageous for given water supply conditions to horticulture and livestock complexes.
In this paper, forestry area change effect on the soil erosion in Asan lake watershed was estimated. Temporal variations of land use in the study watershed were analyzed from Landsat-5 TM remote sensing images. Geographic Information System (GIS) combined with Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) was used to estimate the soil erosion of Asan lake watershed. Spatial data for each USLE factors was obtained from the Landsat-5 TM remote sensing images and 1/25,000 scale digital contour maps. Sediment yield to Asan lake was estimated by sediment delivery ratio and sediment accumulation in lake was estimated by trap efficiency. The estimation methods were validated for sediment accumulation in Asan lake. From the hydrographic survey from 1974 to 2003 for Asan lake, sediment accumulation was measured. The estimated accumulation sediment of 303,569ton/yr showed similar value with observed of 295,888ton/yr. From the validated estimation methods, the increasing amount of soil erosion when 1% of forest area in Asan lake watershed decreases was calculated from 12.91 to 1482.05ton/yr.
A subwatershed within the Lake Juam was monitored to identify hydrologic and water quality characteristics. Rainfall record was collected and flow rate measurement and water quality sampling were conducted periodically at the watershed outlet. Water quality of storm period was worse than that of base flow period. Nutrient loading from the watershed was governed by only a few storms during study period. Nonpoint source pollution was identified major problem for water quality management in Juam Lake.
This study aimed to estimate applicability of a model to simulate circulation in estuarine lake caused by operation of drainage gates. The model consists of 2D (depth-averaged) hydrodynamic models, Delft3D-FLOW model and operation model for drainage gates. The flow through drainage gates was calculated using weir formulae with discharge coefficient, 0.8. The simulations are performed under two conditions: uncontrolled condition and controlled by periods of two days. The results on simulation of the model showed that the water level in estuarine lake was tend to increase above mean sea level. Therefore it was proved that the calibration and verification were needed in order to applicate this model for Saemankeum area.
The remote monitoring system of water salinity was assessed in Wando reclaimed land lake during a farming season in 2009. Increasing of water salinity in this lake used to bring about salt damage on rice plant occasionally. At the early stage of the rice growing period, rice growth was not damaged due to enough rainfall with more than 120 mm from the mid-May to the first ten days of June. Data collection using on-site water salinity measuring sensors every 2 hours and real-time transmission in system were carried out for the experiment. We compared the transmitted values from the sensor system with water sample values collected and analyzed by a local technical office. Salt concentrations measured by sensor in real-time monitoring system were available data. The regression equation between rainfall and water salinity was presented as (water salinity after rainfall) = $0.621{\times}$(water salinity before rainfall)${\times}exp(-0.0139{\times}rainfall)$, ($r^2=0.579$, p<0.01). It is suggested that the system is useful for stable farming in the area where farmer use water in reclaimed lakes as an irrigation source.
To investigate the characteristics of 17 solid waste landfills in the upper drainage basin of Lake Daechong, the landfill sites were surveyed, the leachate of these landfills were analyzed, and the analysis results were assessed from standpoint of water contamination. Sanitary landfills which are now being operated are relatively well equipped with facilities such as leachate collection, daily soil cover and landfill gas treatment devices. But a few of open-dumping landfills were leaking leachate apparently and were supervised improperly and neglectfully by local governments. Some of sanitary landfills exceeded the COD permission criteria of leachate effluent, and some of open-dumping landfills exceeded SS, T-P, Pb, As, Fe, Mn permission criteria of leachate effluent. To improve the water quality of Lake Daechong which is utilized for supplying drinking water, agricultural water, and industrial water to the great part of Chungchong area, the adequate and prompt measures for preventing Daechong Lake water contamination from landfills leachate is necessary.
The emergence and spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria have been increasing with anthropogenic contamination. Understanding the prevalence and distribution of these resistant bacteria in environments is crucial for effectively managing anthropogenic pollutants. Lake Gyeongpo in the Gangwon Province of South Korea is known for its diverse ecological features and human interactions. The lake is exposed to pollutants from nonpoint sources, including urban areas, agricultural practices, and recreational activities, which can introduce antibiotics and foster antibiotic resistance in bacteria. The present study investigates Lake Gyeongpo as a potential reservoir for antibiotic-resistant bacteria in a natural ecosystem. A total of 203 bacterial isolates were collected from six sampling locations in Lake Gyeongpo during May, July, and November 2022. Most isolates were taxonomically identified as Pseudoalteromonas, Bacillus, Shewanella, and Vibrio spp.; their abundance showed a spatiotemporal distribution. An antibiotic susceptibility test was conducted on 75 isolates using the disk diffusion method with six drugs according to the CLSI guideline; 42 isolates were resistant to one or more antibiotics. Among these, 15 isolates were identified as multidrug resistant bacteria. This finding suggests the potential anthropogenic impact on Lake Gyeongpo and provides valuable insights into the dissemination of antibiotic resistance caused by anthropogenic pollutants.
The EFDC (Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code), a numerical model for simulating three-dimensional (3D) flow, transport, and biogeochemical processes in surface water systems including rivers, reservoirs, and estuaries, was applied to assess the effect of sea water and fresh water exchange rates ($Q_e$) on the mixing characteristics of a conservative pollutant (tracer) induced from upstreams and salinity in Saemangeum Lake, Korea. The lake has been closed by a 33 km estuary embankment since last April of 2006, and now seawater enters the lake partially through two sluice gates (Sinsi and Garyuk), which is driving the changes of hydrodynamic and water quality properties of the lake. The EFDC was constructed and calibrated with surveyed bathymetry data and field data including water level, temperature, and salinity in 2008. The model showed good agreement with the field data and adequately replicated the spatial and temporal variations of the variables. The validated model was applied to simulated the tracer and salinity with two different gate operation scenarios: RUN-1 and RUN-2. RUN-1 is the case of real operation condition ($Q_e=25,000,000\;m^3$) of 2008, while RUN-2 assumed full open of Sinsi gate to increase $Q_e$ by $120,000,000\;m^3$. Statistical analysis of the simulation results indicate that mixing characteristics of pollutants from upstream can be significantly affected by the amount of $Q_e$.
