Physicochemical Characteristics and Antioxidant Activities of Doragi (Platycodon grandiflorum) at Different Aging Temperatures and for Various Durations (숙성온도와 기간에 따른 도라지의 이화학적 특성과 항산화 활성)

  • We investigated the physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant activities of Doragi (Platycodon grandiflorum) at different aging temperatures (60, 70 and $80^{\circ}C$) and for various periods of duration (5, 10, 15, 30 and 50 days). As the temperature and duration were increased, the pH of Doragi water extracts decreased from 5.22 to 4.17, whereas total acidity increased from 0.265 to 0.998 lactic acid eq.%. In addition, browning index went up from 0.092 to 1.002 and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) content steeply rose to 50.40 mg/g from its initial zero value with an increase in temperature and duration. The radical scavenging activity of ethanol extracts was enhanced with a rise in temperature and duration as evident from the value of total polyphenol content (0.589 to 2.358 mg/g), DPPH (0.149 to 1.244 mg Trolox eq/g) and ABTS (0.354 to 1.509 mg Trolox eq/g). The correlation between physicochemical characteristics and antioxidant activities was high; the correlation between pH and total acidity showed a r value of -0.910 (P<0.01), whereas between browning index and 5-HMF content, the r value was 0.880 (P<0.01). Total polyphenol content and DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity were highly correlated with the r value of 0.885 (P<0.01) and 0.745 (P<0.01), respectively.

Comparison of Drying Yield, Meat Quality, Oxidation Stability and Sensory Properties of Bone-in Shell Loin Cut by Different Dry-aging Conditions

  • This study aimed to investigate the drying yield, meat quality, oxidation stability and sensory properties of Hanwoo beef loin subjected to different dry-aging conditions. A total of 54 Hanwoo beef loins (bone-in, $6^{th}-13^{th}$ ribs) with fat cover at 2 d postmortem were assigned to four groups and hung in a dry-aging room at a controlled temperature ($2^{\circ}C-4^{\circ}C$), humidity (65%-85%) and air velocity (3 m/s). Four treatment conditions were tested; the respective temperature, humidity and treatment duration are as follows: T1, $2^{\circ}C$, 85%, 60 d; T2, $2^{\circ}C$, 65%, $20d+2^{\circ}C$, 75%, $20d+4^{\circ}C$, 85%, 20 d; T3, $2^{\circ}C$, 75%, $20d+4^{\circ}C$, 85%, 40 d; T4, $4^{\circ}C$, 85%, 60 d. The drying yield, total aerobic counts and fat contents increased, whereas the moisture content, meat color (CIE $L^*$, $a^*$, and $b^*$), and Warner-Bratzler shear force values decreased significantly during the aging period for all treatments (p<0.05). The cooking loss (%) did not change significantly until 40 d, and it was significantly higher in T1 and T4 than in T2 and T3 at 60 d (p<0.05). The water-holding capacity, pH and lipid oxidation [thiobarbituric acid reactive substance (TBARS) values] increased during aging (p<0.05). The sensory scores for tenderness, juiciness, flavor, and overall acceptability of dry-aged loin muscles increased as the aging period increased. T2 and T3 had significantly higher sensory scores and T1 had significantly lower scores for tenderness, juiciness, flavor, and overall acceptability at 20, 40, and 60 d for loin muscles (p<0.05).

  • Background: The aim of this study was to analyze the total phenol and total flavonoid contents and antioxidant activity of steam-treated leaves and rhizomes of Polygonatum sibiricum Redoute. In addition, we aimed to confirm their potential use as cosmetic materials by investigating their anti-aging and skin-whitening activity. Methods and Results: The leaves and rhizomes of P. sibiricum were treated with steam at different temperatures for different durations, and the antioxidant activity (DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity) and total phenol and total flavonoid contents of each sample were tested. The steam temperature and treatment duration siginificantly affected the antioxidant activity and, total phenol and total flavonoid content of the leaves and rhizome of P. sibiricum. Treating the P. sibiricum samples with steam at 120℃ for 12 h, yielded higher total phenol and total flavonoid contents. Comparatively, the samples treated with steam at 120℃ for 12 to 24 h showed significantly higher antioxidant activity. Further, the steamed samples of P. sibiricum demonstrated collagenase and tyrosinase inhibition activity, which indicated their anti-aging and skin-whitening properties. The samples steamed at 120℃ for 12 h, exhibited higher collagenase and tyrosinase inhibition activity. Conclusions: Leaves and rhizomes of P. sibiricum steamed at 120℃ for 12 h, showed highest antioxidant activity and, total phenol and total flavonoid contents than all other samples. Our results indicate the potential of using P. sibiricum as a cosmetic material by confirming its excellent anti-aging and whitening activity.

  • This paper investigated the aging characteristic under long-term corona discharge on roan temperature vulcanized silicone rubber, which has been using as a protective coating material for solving the contaminant problem. The applied electrical field is 10kV/cm ac and corona discharge treatment was applied on RTV silicone rubber sheet for maximum 250 hours. With the duration of corona discharge. the diffusible low molecular weight species increased, which was determined the usage of n-hexane extraction method. In addition, the contaminant layer was formed on the treated surface, and then measured the contact angle. We investigated the relation of contact angle and diffusible low molecular weight species. It is found that scissor of main chain PDMS and side chains $(CH_3)$ and the generation of LMW species were occurred by a corona discharge. The improvement of hydrophobicity rate is thought due to the increase of diffusible LMW species.

  • In the present paper, the destructive behavior of distilled water, salty water, sulfuric acid, and heat on glass/vinyl ester composites was investigated by experimental methods. Hetron 922 vinyl ester resin and two types of mat and woven glass fibers as the reinforcements were used to fabricate composite test samples. All samples were immersed in distilled water, salty water, and sulfuric acid with three different concentrations. The tests were performed at 20℃ and 70℃ for the exposure duration of 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks. Bending tests were performed after aging for all composite samples to check the degradation of the bending modulus and strength. The results show that the effect of distilled water, in comparison with salty water, on the degradation of composite samples was significant. On the other hand, almost non-sensitivity of concentrations of salty water on the weight gain of specimens has been observed. In addition, it was also observed that the degradation of samples at 70℃ temperature is much more than that of at 20℃. Also, it was observed that the flexural modulus of virgin specimens exposed to salty water (2% concentration) has been recovered just after two weeks of immersion. Furthermore, in some cases, composite samples under the sulfuric acid solution have lost almost 80% of their mechanical properties.

Effect of Al Precursor Addition Time on Catalytic Characteristic of Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 Catalyst for Water Gas Shift Reaction (Water Gas Shift 반응을 위한 Cu/ZnO/Al2O3 촉매에서 Al 전구체 투입시간에 따른 촉매 특성 연구)

  • $Cu/ZnO/Al_2O_3$ catalysts for water gas shift (WGS) reaction were synthesized by co-precipitation method with the fixed molar ratio of Cu/Zn/Al precursors as 45/45/10. Copper and zinc precursor were added into sodium carbonate solution for precipitation and aged for 24h. During the aging period, aluminum precursor was added into the aging solution with different time gap from the precipitation starting point: 6h, 12h, and 18h. The resulting catalysts were characterized with SEM, XRD, BET surface measurement, $N_2O$ chemisorption, TPR, and $NH_3$-TPD analysis. The catalytic activity tests were carried out at a GHSV of $27,986h^{-1}$ and a temperature range of 200 to $400^{\circ}C$. The catalyst morphology and crystalline structures were not affected by aluminum precursor addition time. The Cu dispersion degree, surface area, and pore diameter depended on the aging time of Cu-Zn precipitate without the presence of $Al_2O_3$ precursor. Also, the interaction between the active substance and $Al_2O_3$ became more stronger as aging duration, with Al precursor presented in the solution, increased. Therefore, it was confirmed that aluminum precursor addition time affected the catalytic characteristics and their catalytic activities.

Analysis of Degradation Phenomena in Arc-Tube of Ceramic Metal Halide Lamp (세라믹 메탈할라이드 램프의 아크튜브 열화현상 분석)

  • Recently, the demand of ceramic metal halide lamp has been expanded. Therefore, the lamp with high efficiency and long lifetime are increasing and the evaluation of reliability is needed. In this paper, the degradation phenomena of ceramic metal halide lamp was studied. The lamp was tested for 3000 on/off cycles with each cycle having a duration of 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off based on the accelerated aging experiment based on "Reliability Standards RS C 0085". As result, the corrosion of arc tube and leak was appeared from reaction between inner wall of PCA and chemical elements, and distortion of electrode was resulted from difference of thermal expansion between arc tube of PCA and electrode. Also, the efficiency of lamp was decreased by the change of inner pressure, operation temperature, and driving voltage from wall blackening.

XRD Study for the Effect of Aging and Gel Composition on the Crystdlinity of MCM-41 (숙성과 겔 성분이 MCM-41의 결정성에 미치는 효과에 대한 XRD 연구)

  • The reaction gel mixtures of molar composition (0.3${\sim}$2.1) $SiO_2:\;(0.10{\sim}0.50)\;CTABr:\;0.15{\sim}0.23)\;TMAOH:\;(20{\sim}100)\;H_2O$ we prepared and then aged at room temperature for a definite duration. The aged gel is reacted hydrothermally at $150^{\circ}C$ for 2 days. The pH of reaction gel during synthesis is strongly influenced by the concentration of TMAOH and silica source. The pH change affects the phase of product, which is monitored by X-ray diffractometer. With increasing the TMAOH ratio from 0.19 to 0.23, the gel becomes more basic, and the product involves more lamellar phase. At TMAOH ratio lower than 0.19, the hexagonal phase is lower with decrease of pH. The content of the lamellar phase increases at a lower $SiO_2$ concentration, and higher concentrations have a clear detrimental effect on the crystallinity ofMCM-41 due to an excess silica source. The best quality MCM-41 is synthesized from a reaction gel composition of $1.0\;SiO_2:\;0.27\;CTABr:\;0.19\;TMAOH:\;40\;H_2O$. The pH values of this gel, aged one for 24 hr, and reacted one at $150^{\circ}C$ for 2 days are 12.3, 11.5, and 10.5, respectively. Gel aging for 24 h is essential for preparing high quality MCM-41. Longer aging causes a decrease of hexagonal phase.

An Experimental Study on the Early Strength Development Properties of Concrete According to Curing Condition and Used Materials (사용재료 및 양생조건에 따른 콘크리트의 조기강도발현 특성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the engineering properties of concrete for the early strength development. As a result of reviewing it by establishing each experimental factor and level, the cement had more excellent quality performance in CHC and HESPC than OPC. This study has shown that the PC series admixture was more excellent in side of elapsed time (aging) and early strength development than PNS series admixture. In addition, there was much difference according to the curing temperature, but the early strength development showed the considerable vulnerability in curing temperature below $12^{\circ}C$. To satisfy the strength requirements of 5 MPa/18 hr this study has shown that it needed the curing temperature over $17^{\circ}C$ to the minimum in OPC, over $14^{\circ}C$ in CHC, and over $11^{\circ}C$ in HESPC. On the other hand, as to the strength properties according to W/C, the less W/C was, the more strength development was excellent. If this study is to be used in construction filed on a basis of this result, this researcher is considered as possible of the economic execution of construction by advancing the early strength and by the reduction of construction cost according to shortening construction duration.
