  • The report of an investigation into the performance of mortar specimens made with recycled fine aggregate (RA) exposed to sodium sulfate solution for 360 days is presented in this paper. Mechanical properties of mortar specimens such as visual examination, compressive strength, expansion and mass loss were periodically monitored. From the test results, it was found that mortar specimens with higher replacement levels of Rh exhibited poor performance in sodium sulfate solution. However, compared to mortar specimens without RA, those with lower replacement levels of RA (up to 50% by mass) was more resistant to sulfate attack. Through the x-ray diffraction analysis, it was confirmed that the main products causing sulfate deterioration in RA mortar specimens were the formation of gypsum and thaumasite.

  • The coarse and fine aggregates that make up the majority of concrete are resources. But, the raw naturals that make up concrete are our earth's resources and there is not a replenishable stock. Also industrial waste and life waste leaped into a pollution source. Therefore, as construction continue, quarries are exhausted and new sources must be discovered. The purpose of this paper is to investigate an application of recycled coal ash plastics in the construction field. The study examined the physical and mechanical properties of recycled coal ash plastics aggregate. In the results, although the absorption and specific gravity of SLAs increases slightly as the fly ash content increases, the compressive strength and modulus of elastic of concrete made with SLAs remains relatively constant when mortar type and volume fraction are also held constant. These values are always lower than natural-weight aggregate concretes.

  • The concrete aggregate generates carbon dioxide in production but its demanding is gradually increased in accordance with the depletion of natural resources. Therefore we evaluated compatibility and basic physical properties of Silicon manganese slag generated in iron production as an applicable concrete aggregate. In our test, the silicon maganese slag shows 2.8g/㎥ of density in 10mm of maximum particle size similar to a natural aggregate, and its absorption rate was 0.3% similar to the electric furnace slag. Unit volume weight and ratio of absolute volume was respectively 2,001㎏/㎥ and 51%. Strength properties of Silicon manganese slag will be evaluated with further studies and experiments.

  • Recycling of waste concrete will contribute not only to the solution of a growing waste disposal problem, also help to conserve natural resources of aggregate and to secure future supply of reasonably priced aggregates for building construction purpose within large urban areas. But there recycled aggregates are more porous and less resistant to mechanical actions. In comparison with natural aggrete concrete, recycled aggregate concrete shows reductions in strength and other engineering properties. And it may also be less durable due to increase in porosity and permeability. Economical ways of improving the quality of recycled aggregate concrete are: (1)by reducing the water-cement ratio; (2)by reducing the water content using a superplasticizer without affecting the workability; (3)addition of pozzolan, such as fly ash; and (4)blending of recycled aggregate with the natural aggretes.

  • Recent economic development caused a vast use of mineral resources in Korea. Consequently, a supply of poor quality course aggregate (poor particle shape as well as poor gradation) in construction material become a social problem. In this study, an effect of aggregate particle shape on property of concrete was evaluated. The flat and elongation ratio of crushed aggregate was controled to 8, 15, 25, 35, and $47\%$ in order to evaluate fresh concrete behavior as well as physical properties in hardened concrete. Test result shows a poor aggregate particle shape cause a significant increase in entrapped air in fresh concrete, while no significant effect on hardened concrete property, such as strength as well as stiffness. This increase in entrapped air, however, believed to cause a significant decrease in concrete durability.

  • Aggregate occupies about 70 to 80 percent by volume in concrete as skeleton of concrete, but recently, it has been insufficient in quantity to collect good natural aggregate because of exhaustion of aggregate resources. In case of Korea, in 2002, the using ratio of crushed stone occupies about $97\%$ of whole coarse aggregate, and ratio of crushed sand occupies about $18.3\%$ of whole fine aggregate. This is an experimental study to compare and analyze the properties of concrete according to the grading of crushed stone to improve quality and mix design of concrete using crushed stone. According to results, it was found that grading level of crushed stone in the range of G42 to G60 was better than any other grading level in terms of fluidity and compressive strength. And it is considered to be in the range of 6.52 to 6.85 in terms of FM.

  • This study is analysis of the utilization as a concrete fine aggregate on CGS, a by-product of Integrated coal gasification combined cycle(IGCC). That is, in KS F 2527 "Concrete aggregate," properties of 1~12times to CGS were evaluated, focusing on quality items corresponding to natural aggregate sand(NS) and melted slag aggregate sand(MS). As a result, the distribution of grain shape, safety and expansion were all satisfied with KS standards by physical properties, but the quality was unstable at 7~12times of water absorption ratio and absolute dry density. The particle size distribution was unstable due to asymmetry distribution of coarse particles, and particles were too thick for 7~12times. The passing ratio of 0.08mm sieve was also out of the KS standard at part factor of 7~12times, but chloride content, clay contents, coal and lignite were all satisfactory. Meanwhile, chemical composition was satisfactory except for $SO_3$ in 1~6times, and content and amount of harmful substances were all within the specified value except for F in 7~12times. As a result of SEM analysis, the surface quality and porosity were 7~12times more than 1~6times, and it was the quality was degraded. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the quality deviation by using separate measures in order to utilize it as concrete aggregate in the future, and if it is premixed with fine quality aggregate, it will contribute positively to solve aggregate supply shortage and utilize circulation resources.

  • Using recycled aggregate from demolished concrete structures provides a peat opportunity fur conserving natural resources. In many parts of world, virgin aggregate deposits have been depleted, and transporting aggregates over long distances can be much more expensive than using a low-cost recycled aggregate. In Korea, about 7-million tons of concrete occurs annually, out of this, about 2-3 million tons are available for recycling. This study is to present the method of utilizing the recycled aggregate. The recycled aggregate concretes were made for compressive strength test, flexural strength test and fatigue test using w/c of 40, 50 and 60%. The replacing rates of recycled aggregate to virgin aggregate were 0, 25 and 50%. The purpose of this study is to compare the fatigue lift of recycled aggregate concrete with that of virgin aggregate concrete. It was shown that the fatigue life of recycled concrete was function of recycled aggregate replacement ratio and water cement ratio.

  • The supply of natural aggregate for concrete has been difficult, and the amount of construction waste has been continuously increasing. Therefore, the necessity of using recycled aggregate made of construction waste as aggregate is rised. Therefore, many studies on the characteristics of concrete using recycled aggregate have been made and positive studies have been reported mainly in recent studies. A study on the chlorides binding effect of the mortar with recycled coarse aggregate has been reported. However, due to the user's perception of waste, most of the recycled aggregate currently produced is used only for low value-added products. In order to improve the recognition of recycled aggregate and the user's perception of recycled aggregate concrete, long-term monitoring of the structure with 100% recycled aggregate was conducted to confirm the applicability of the recycled aggregate concrete.
