  • This study tries to analyze topographic distribution and characteristics of as well as formative age and incision rate of fluvial terraces in Danyang River on western side and Geum River on eastern side of the northern Sobaek Mountains and to estimate geomorphic development during the late Quaternary in the mountains regarded as one of the uplift axes in the Korean Peninsula. OSL age dating shows that the fluvial terrace I with an altitude above riverbed of approximately 7~13 m in Danyang River has a formative age of approximately 18 ka (MIS 2) and incision rate in the river is approximately 0.156~0.194 m/ka based on the age. Altitudes above riverbed of the fluvial terrace I in Geum River range from approximately 7 to 14 m and the terrace is thought to be older than 70 ka based on age result from aeolian sediments above the terrace deposits, suggestive of an incision rate less than approximately 0.10 m/ka. These results indicate lower uplift rate in the northern Sobaek Mountains than in the Taebaek Mountains. Moreover, it can be suggested that the northern Sobaek Mountains has experienced asymmetric uplift during the late Quaternary, because the river on western side of the northern Sobaek Mountains shows greater uplift rate than the eastern side river does. Low incision rate in Geum River can be attributed to low altitude of the river basin with little difference in altitude from the base level as well as to gentle river slope due to influence of Nakdong River.

  • Archaeomagnetic dating method is used to assign a date to the archaeological remains in which burnt soil is found by measuring the changes in terrestrial magnetism with the thermal remanent magnetization retained in burnt soil. This method, in particular, is quite useful to determine an age of the archaeological remains in which no properties are found, which makes it difficult to assigning a date. Hemp kiln and lime kiln fall under remains of these features, and 21 and 5 archaeomagnetic data from both kilns respectively were obtained by measuring the- remanent magnetization in burnt soil samples that are extracted in hemp kilns and lime kilns in the country. The results of archaeomagnetic dating with these data show the age range of the hemp kilns is between the late 10th century A.D. and the middle of the 19th century, and that of the lime kilns is between the early 16th century A.D. and the middle of the 18th century. The factor that the number of data collected from the hemp kilns was comparatively more than those from the lime kilns might affect the result, however corresponding to the fact that hemp had been used for a long period of time, the period of hemp kiln are widely spread over the chronological table. And the archaeomagnetic dating of lime kiln, in view of archaeological periods, is not only in accord with the late Joseon period when the tombs with lime-soil mixture barrier in trend; this is also telling that its width of archaeological period is comparatively narrow.

  • We conducted TL/OSL dating for the earthenware kilns in the Bongsan-ri archaeological site, Osong, which was occupied from the late nineteenth to the late twentieth century. With the SAR-TL/OSL method, paleodose was determined from the equivalent dose during the burial period($ED_{burial}$), the background dose($ED_{BG}$), the fading correction factor(f), and the overestimation correction factor(C). The annual dose rates and their provenance were evaluated from the measurement of natural radionuclides $^{238}U$, $^{232}Th$, and $^{40}K$. Because the comprehensive absolute age was provided by combining the resulting TL/OSL and radiocarbon data, we concluded that, for the absolute chronology of a modern archaeological site, TL/OSL dating and radiocarbon dating must be carried out together and summed. The construction and occupation of earthenware kilns in the Bongsan-ri site had changed from stage I (No.5, 6 kilns), to stage II (No.1, 2, 3 kilns), to stage III (No.4) in chronological order. When Bayesian statistics were applied, we found that the absolute ages of occupation for stages I, II, and III correspond to AD $1910{\pm}23$, AD $1970{\pm}10$, and AD $1987{\pm}4$. These results were in good agreement with the archaeological context or chronology.

  • We present the K-Ar age dating results of <0.1㎛ fraction of the selected fault rocks from the Yangsan fault in the Yeonghae area. Based on the mineralogical characterization, the <0.1㎛ fractions were mostly composed of 1Md illite polytype, or I-S interstratified mineral, which should be formed by fault activation. Therefore, we determined the timings of fault activation events by analyzing K-Ar age-dating for the <0.1㎛ fractions. Accordingly, the activation timings of Yangsan Fault in the Yeonghae area were determined as 45.5±1.1 Ma, 50.9±1.2 Ma, 58.2±1.3 Ma, 60.8±1.4 Ma, 65.3±1.6 Ma, 66.8±1.5 Ma, 67.1±1.5 Ma, and 75.1±1.7 Ma. These results indicate that at least 5-times of major fault events occurred in the Yangsan fault from late Mesozoic to Cenozoic Era. In the outcrop, age dating results tend to be younger age from the location of the oldest sample(75.1±1.7 Ma) toward to the both sides. From the results, it suggests that the fault activation extends from the location of oldest age saple to both sides. This geochronological research of the multiple fault activation ages for the Yangsan Fault will provide crucial information for establishing the tectonic evolution model in the southeastern part of the Korean Peninsula.

  • This study examined how the rejection sensitivity model might be applied to the link between rejection sensitivity and dating relationship satisfaction by means of investigating the mediating effect of cognitive emotion regulation strategy and conflict resolution strategy. A total of 668 college students in Seoul (232 males, 436 females, mean age of 21.59 years [SD=2.08]) participated in this study. The results illustrated that the adaptive emotion regulation strategy, among cognitive emotion regulation strategies, and the integration and compromise strategies, among conflict resolution strategies, had the double mediation effect on the association between rejection sensitivity and dating relationship satisfaction. In other words, a direct negative correlation between rejection sensitivity and dating relationship satisfation resulted in high rejection sensitivity, which was expected to generate low satisfaction in dating relationships. However, it was confirmed that the use of these two strategies-the cognitive emotion regulation and the conflict resolution strategy-could bring positive effects in terms of the dating relationship satisfaction; the former helped couples to see situations more broadly and increase positive perceptions, while the latter solve their problems each other. Based on these findings, we discuss their implications for counseling practice and therapeutic interventions

  • Optimum counting condition of a low level liquid scintillation counter for radiocarbon dating has been determined to minimize the contribution of tritium activity and get the highest FOM by the variation of scintillation solutions, scintillation solution to benzene ratio, and ${\beta}$-ray spectrum counting ranges. Under the condition, background count rate has been reduced to $2.26{\pm}0.03cpm$, and the maximum measurable age reached to about 40,000 years. And the practicality of counting system has been verified by the analysis of shell and peat samples.

  • Re-Os isotopic system, based on the long-lived $\beta^-$ transition of $^{187}Os(\lambda=1.67\times10^{-11}year^{-1})$ is being widely used in cosmochemistry and geochemistry. Along with the development of elemental separation and mass-spectrometric technique, the Re-Os isotopic system, like Sm-Nd, Rb-Sr, U-Th-Pb isotopic system, is now conventionally applied as a useful tool for absolute dating and isotoptc tracers. This paper introduces brief principles of Re-Os isotopic system and presents the general methodology fur dating the formation age of the subcontinental lithospheric mantle, based on the Re-Os isotopic data of the mantle xeonliths from South Korea.

  • Uranium-thorium separation technique from shallow sediment and ${\alpha}$-source electrodeposition technique are established in the present work, and uranium series disequilibrium dating method is applied to the quaternary piston core from Sangback-do, South Sea of Korean Peninsula. The age of the piston core (depth 200~300cm) sampled from Latitude $34^{\circ}06^{\prime}37^{{\prime}{\prime}}$, Longitude $127^{\circ}37^{\prime}37^{{\prime}{\prime}}$ was determined as ranging from $9.0{\pm}2.2$ to $22.9{\pm}3.3$ Ky B.P, i.e., Later Pleistocene, older than Holocene which was stratigraphically known in the previous study. The sedimentation rate in the area is regularly increased according to the depth of the sedimentation layer. Except a few split sections of the piston core the sedimentation rates are avarage 7.2cm/1,000 years. Where sedimentation layer is deeper, then sedimentation rate tend to be slower. It must be pointed in age calculation that initial $^{230}Th/^{234}U$ radioactivity ratio is much influenced when detrital material was introduced in the sample. The $^{230}Th/^{234}U$ activity ratio measured in the present work is 0.06 at $^{232}Th=0$, and this value shows higher analytical errors because of the low· radioactivity of $^{230}Th$ in the samples.

  • It was estimated that wooden warehouses excavated from Bongseon-ri site in Seocheon were built around the 5th century according to the soil layers and construction methods of earthen structures. In order to identify the exact date, three wooden materials (BSMG 01, 06, and 12) from wooden warehouses were analyzed through radiocarbon dating using wiggle match. The outermost ring of BSMG 01 produced a radiocarbon date (95.4% confidence interval) of AD 431~551, BSMG 06 produced a date of AD 460~570, and BSMG 12 produced dates of either AD 240~430 or AD 490~510. The common age of the three wooden materials was identified as AD 490-510 and coincided with the original estimated archaeological age. Therefore, this study proved the accuracy of radiocarbon dating using wiggle match.

  • It was estimated that the Imdang-dong site of Gyungsan was constructed in the 2nd to 4th century based on excavated layers and artifacts. This study was carried out to verify the result using the dendrochronological analysis of six wooden pillars excavated at the site. As a result, it was proven that 6 specimens were not cut at the same age because their tree-ring chronologies were not synchronized each other. And more, it was reconfirmed in wiggle matching dating as confirming two of them were dated to A.D. 94-135 and A.D. 224-289, respectively. It was coincided with the above-mentioned estimated age. In wood identification, most of them were identified as Hovenia dulcis Thunb., Tilia spp., Ulmus spp. which grow usually under cool environment. Based on the result, we could conclude that the climate at that time was cooler than the present.
