We previously identified the rice gene, OsSAP, as an encoder of a highly conserved putative senescence-associated protein that was shown to have anti-apoptotic activity. To confirm the role of OsSAP in inducing abiotic stress tolerance in rice, we introduced OsSAP and AtBI-1, a plant homologue of Bax inhibitor-1, under the control of the CaMV 35S promoter into the rice genome through Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. The OsSAP transformants showed a similar chlorophyll index after salinity treatments with AtBI-1. Furthermore, we compared the effects of salinity stress on leaves and roots by examining the hormone levels of abscisic acid (ABA), jasmonic acid (JA), gibberellic acid (GA3), and zeatin in transformants compared to the control. With the exception of phytohormones, stress-induced changes in hormone levels putatively related to stress tolerance have not been investigated previously. Hormonal level analysis confirmed the lower rate of stress in the transformants compared to the control. The levels of ABA and JA in OsSAP and AtBI-1 transformants were similar, where stress rates increased after one week and decreased after a two week period of drought; there was a slightly higher accumulation compared to the control. However, a similar trend was not observed for the level of zeatin, as the decrease in the level of zeatin accumulation differed in both OsSAP and AtBI-1 transformants for all genotypes during the early period of salinity stress. The GA3 level was detected under normal conditions, but not under salinity stress.

Purpose: This study aimed to explore and describe the school life experience of male nursing students reinstated at school after military service. Methods: The participants in the current study were 20 male nursing students from three universities. The data were collected in focus group interviews, and an inductive content analysis was performed on the data obtained from six focus groups. Results: The content relating to the school experience of the participants was categorized into four themes: making a new start, facing challenges, trying to find one's place, and confusion about one's professional identity. Conclusion: Nursing education in Korea needs to be reconsidered, as it adheres to a gender-stereotyped identity. This study provides implications for improving the content and quality of nursing education.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of health education based on life skill training (LST) on middle school students' health knowledge, attitude, and behavior. Methods: For this study, 961 middle school students, residing in Seoul, Korea, were selected. The students received health education one day a week for 7 weeks from September 1, 2014 to October 25, 2014. Before and after the whole education program, the students filled out questionnaires surveying on their health knowledge, attitude, and behavior. Excluding inappropriate data, the data of 843 students was analyzed through Paired t-test. Results: After the education program based on LST, there were statistically significant increases in the scores for knowledge about drinking, body image distortion, good eating habits, right usage of smartphone, and prevention of smartphone addiction (p<.05). There were also statistically significant increases in the scores for attitude toward smoking, drug, good eating habits and prevention of smartphone addiction (p<.05). There were statistically significant increases in the scores for behavior regarding drug, good eating habits, right usage of smartphone and prevention of smartphone addiction (p<.05). Conclusion: Health education based on life skill training was especially effective in improving the subjects' scores for health knowledge, attitude, and health behavior. Therefore, various and systemic LST educational programs should be developed and implemented and their effects should be evaluated in further studies.

Aphasia is a language disorder that results from brain damage and typically occurs after a stroke. The purpose of this case report was to describe the effects of Korean medical treatment on anomic aphasia after a putaminal hemorrhage. We used Korean medical treatment, including head acupuncture and herbal medicine (Hyungbangsabaek-san) therapy, on a patient who was admitted to the hospital for 19 days. The clinical symptoms were assessed with the Korean version of the Western Aphasia Battery (K-WAB), and quality of life was evaluated with Korean version of Stroke and Aphasia Quality of Life Scale-39 (K-SAQOL-39). After 19 days of treatment, the K-WAB scores were increased from 17 to 19 in the spontaneous speech score, from 7.55 to 9.85 in the comprehension score, from 9 to 9.4 in the speaking score, and from 5.8 to 9.7 in the naming score. The AQ score was increased from 78.7 to 95.9, and the K-SAQOL-3 score was increased from 2.64 to 3.26. In conclusion, the study findings suggested that Korean medical treatment could be an effective option for treating symptoms and improving quality of life in patients with aphasia after stroke.
Objective: To investigate a clinical effect of Taichichuan training focussing on improvement of quality of life in cancer patients. Methods: The subject of study consisted of 10 cancer patients at the East-West Cancer Center of Dunsan Oriental hospital. The survey method of this study is Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy-General (FACT-G) korean version. Patients performed Taichichuan twice a week and filled out FACT-G questionnaire before and after training. Results: Although total FACT-G score decreased 0.7 point after training, emotional well-being score increased 1.0 point after training. Male improved FACT-G score better than female. Over 50 age improved FACT-G score better than under 50 age. Over stage Ⅲ improved FACT-G score better than Under Stage II. Patients who were treated integrative treatment improved FACT-G score better than patients who were only treated conventional treatment. But all results were not significant statistically. Conclusions: Emotional well-being tends to improve after training, but this study cannot proved Taichichuan training improve quality of life in cancer patients. Well designed advanced study will be needed to prove its benefits.
Purpose: This study examined the effects of therapeutic massage (TMP) and home exercise program (HEP) on pain, range of motion (ROM), depression, and quality of life (QOL) after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair in middle-aged women. Methods: Nineteen middle-aged women who underwent arthroscopic rotator cuff repair were enrolled in the study. All subjects were assigned randomly to the experimental group (n=9) or the control group (n=10). The subjects in both groups performed HEP for 30 minutes, three times per day, for eight weeks. The subjects in the experimental group also performed HEP, with TMP being performed for 30 minutes, 16 sessions for eight weeks. All subjects were evaluated with a visual analogue scale (VAS), shoulder ROM, self-rating depression scale (SDS), and Korean brief version of WHO quality of life scale (WHOQOL-BREF). A paired t-test was performed to test the significant differences between before and after the intervention. An independent t-test was conducted to test the significant differences between the groups. Results: Following the intervention, both groups showed significant differences than before the intervention in the VAS, shoulder ROM, SDS, and WHOQOL-BREF (p<0.05). There were significant differences in the ROM of shoulder flexion, SDS, and WHOQOL-BREF between the groups (p<0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that intensive TMP is an effective method for improving shoulder flexion mobility, depressive symptom, and QOL in middle-aged women after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair.
Objective: This study aimed to investigate the effects of fall-prevention exercise programs on fall efficacy, depression and health-related quality of life in elderly. Design: a randomized controlled trial Methods: A total of 57 participants over 65-years-old have been allocated to control and experimental groups. The experimental group received 8 weeks of fall-prevention exercises that included strengthening of lower extremities, balance and gait training. They received the exercises twice a week for 50 minutes as a group. Both groups were assessed using Modified Falls Efficacy Scale (MFES), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), and 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) prior and post to the intervention. The control group also received the same exercise program after the post evaluation. Results: The experimental group showed overall improvement in MFES, GDS, and physical components of SF-36 (p<0.05). The MFES was significantly increased in the experimental group after the intervention (p<0.05). The GDS was significantly decreased in the experimental group after the intervention (p<0.05). The SF-36, only physical Function, Role limitations due to physical health, general health, and energy and fatigue categories were improved in the experimental group after the intervention (p<0.05). Conclusions: The results showed 8 weeks of fall-prevention exercise programs can increase fall efficacy and physical related quality of life while reducing depression of elderly over 65.

This study has a purpose to analyze trajectories of life satisfaction of the elderly after their retirement and how the characteristics of individual, retirement and family relationship have an effect on the life satisfaction. This study has investigated the Korean elderly, who had been retired, using the data from three waves(1st wave(2005)~3rd wave(2009) of the Korean Retirement and Income Panel(KReIS). Data analysis has been used to identify the predictors of the intercept and slope related to the life satisfaction after retirement, focusing the trajectories of the life satisfaction after retirement and individual characteristics, retirement characteristics and family relationship with application of the growth curve model by Amos 20.0. First, the intercept of the life satisfaction after retirement was somewhat below average. Life satisfaction averagely increased little by little from 1st wave to 3rd wave. Second, by conducting the conditional growth curve model, the study revealed that the intercept of the life satisfaction after retirement is high on individual characteristics(sex, educational level, income, health status) and in retirement characteristics(voluntary retirement) and satisfaction with family relationship and married life). Furthermore, health status, voluntary retirement, and satisfaction with family relationship asserted the meaningful variables in the slope of life satisfaction after retirement.
The purpose of this study was to verify the effectiveness of sociodrama on adolescents who are maladjusted in school. For this study, nine adolescents were selected from a middle school located in Seoul. The Inventory of School adjustment by Bae Sook-Jin, Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory(BDHI) and Impulsivity Test by Eysenck were administered. The experiment group acted out a sociodrama twelve times. The first follow-up test was conducted twelve weeks after the pre-test. The second follow-up test was conducted six weeks after first follow-up test. Each time the adolescents acted out a sociodrama their behavior was recorded by a video- camera and then documented by research assistants. Also in order to discover any changes in daily life after sociodrama, an interview survey were done with the adolescents' teachers. The findings were as follows. First, in the initial follow-up test degree of school-maladjustment was less than in the pre-test. Further decreases in the level of maladjustment were noted in the subsequent follow-ups. Therefore, it can be concluded that the performance of sociodramas can reduce school-maladjustment among adolescents and that this reduced level is maintained. Second, the level of hostility discovered in the first follow-up test was less than that in the pre-test, and this level continued to decrease in the following follow-ups. Therefore, we may conclude that sociodrama that reduces adolescent hostility and the reduced levels continue. Finally, the degree of impulse detected in the first follow-up was, once again, less than that of the pre-test, And, as in the other cases, there was a continued decrease in this level. We may therefore conclude that sociodrama does reduce the impulse of adolescents and that this reduction is maintained. This study indicates that sociodrama is an effective method to improve the psychological characters of adolescents who are maladjusted in school. Given the above, a follow up study is suggested.
Recently, Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG) was shown to exert insulin-sensitizing and adiposity-reducing effects in high-fat (HF) diet-fed mice. In the present study, we observed that the effects were correlated with the extent of dysbiosis induced by HF diet feeding before LGG administration. LGG-treated mice were protected from HF diet-induced adiposity and/or insulin resistance when LGG was treated after, not along with, HF diet feeding. Results indicate that, under HF dietary condition, supplemented LGG reverses insulin resistance, but does not block its onset.
