A Nano-particle Deposition System for Ceramic and Metal Coating at Room Temperature and Low Vacuum Conditions

  • A new nano-particle deposition system (NPDS) was developed for a ceramic and metal coating process. Nano- and micro-sized powders were sprayed through a supersonic nozzle at room temperature and low vacuum conditions to create ceramic and metal thin films on metal and polymer substrates without thermal damage. Ceramic titanium dioxide ($TiO_2$) powder was deposited on polyethylene terephthalate substrates and metal tin (Sn) powder was deposited on SUS substrates. Deposition images were obtained and the resulting chemical composition was measured using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The test results demonstrated that the new NPDS provides a noble coating method for ceramic and metal materials.

Statistical Characteristics of Domestic Composite Material Prepregs (국산 복합재료 프리프레그 통계적 특성)

  • This study shows the statistical properties of the domestic composite material prepregs test result. During the last three years(2012.5~2015.6) the prepreg specimen tests have been performed by referring to NCAMP developed test procedure which was approved by FAA. The database of (1) Carbon Tape, (2) Glass Fabric, and (3) Carbon Fabric composite material prepregs' characteristics have been established for certified aircraft structures. This qualified materials can be used for aircraft structural design through proper material equivalency procedures.

  • The bipolar plate is a major component of the PEM fuel cell stack, which takes a large portion of stack cost. In this study, as alternative materials fur bipolar plate of PEM fuel cells, graphite composites were fabricated by compression molding. Graphite particles mixed with epoxy resin were used as the main substance to provide electric conductivity. Flow channels were fabricated by compression molding, and design of experiments (DOE) was applied to the tests to evaluate moldability. Results showed that land width and channel depth were two significant factors for moldability, and channel width had little influence on the moldability.

  • In this study, a optimal design on the hood automotive using eco-friendly natural fiber composites is performed. The hood of an automobile is determined by dividing the Inner panel shape through optimization phase to outer panel and inner panel. It was performed to optimize the size of the thickness of the inner panel and the outer panel by applying a flax/epoxy composite materials. The optimized shape was evaluated for weight-lightening, stability and the pedestrian collision safety. Through the resin flow analysis are confirmed to molding possibility judgment of product.

  • Composite materials are highly sensitive to the presence of manufacturing and service-related defects that can reach a critical size during service condition and thereby may affect the safety of the structure. When the structure undergoes some kind of damage, its stiffness reduces, in turn the dynamic responses change. In order to avoid safety issues early detection of damage is necessary. The knowledge of the vibration behavior of a structure is necessary and can be used to determine the existence as well as the location and the extent of damage.

  • Ultrasonic Machining (USM) is widely used in cutting of non-conductive, brittle workpiece materials such as engineering ceramics. However, USM has a limitation in its application to micro machining because problems are occurred in attaching micro tools to the machine and maintaining high precision. Therefore Micro Ultrasonic Machining (MUSM) with WEDM is proposed in this research. The experiments are produced as the change of shaft diameter and abrasive size.

  • Damping systems have been widely used to various industrial structures and are mainly hydraulic and pneumatic devices nowadays. In this work, a novel damping system based on the colloidal suspension in the field of nanotechnology is investigated. The colloidal suspension consists of Iyophobic working fluid and hydrophobic-coated porous particle. The mechanism of mechanical energy dissipation in damping system based on the colloidal suspension with nano-porous particles is different from that of the existing hydraulic damping system. The absorbed energy of the damping system using colloidal suspension can be calculated through the mechanical equilibrium condition by the superficial tensions of liquid-gas Interface in the hydrophobic surface in nano-porous particles. The results from an analytic approach have a reasonable agreement with experimental results.

γ'-Precipitation Free Zone and γ' Rafting Related to Surface Oxidation in Creep Condition of Directionally Solidified CM247LC Superalloy (일방향 응고 CM247LC 초내열합금의 크리프 조건에서 표면 산화와 연계된 γ'-석출 고갈 지역 및 γ' 조대화)

  • This study used optical and scanning electron microscopy to analyze the surface oxidation phenomenon that accompanies a γ'-precipitate free zone in a directional solidified CM247LC high temperature creep specimen. Surface oxidation occurs on nickel-based superalloy gas turbine blades due to high temperature during use. Among the superalloy components, Al and Cr are greatly affected by diffusion and movement, and Al is a major component of the surface oxidation products. This out-diffusion of Al was accompanied by γ' (Ni3Al) deficiency in the matrix, and formed a γ'-precipitate free zone at the boundary of the surface oxide layer. Among the components of CM247LC, Cr and Al related to surface oxidation consist of 8 % and 5.6 %, respectively. When Al, the main component of the γ' precipitation phase, diffused out to the surface, a high content of Cr was observed in these PFZs. This is because the PFZ is made of a high Cr γ phase. Surface oxidation of DS CM247LC was observed in high temperature creep specimens, and γ'-rafting occurred due to stress applied to the creep specimens. However, the stress states applied to the grip and gauge length of the creep specimen were different, and accordingly, different γ'-rafting patterns were observed. Such surface oxidation and PFZ and γ'-rafting are shown to affect CM247LC creep lifetime. Mapping the microstructure and composition of major components such as Al and Cr and their role in surface oxidation, revealed in this study, will be utilized in the development of alloys to improve creep life.

  • The chemical response of energetic materials is analyzed in terms of 1) the thermal decomposition under the thermal stimulus and 2) the reactive flow upon the mechanical impact, both of which give rise to an exothermic thermal runaway or an explosion. The present study aims at building a set of chemical kinetics that can precisely model both thermal and impact initiation of a heavily aluminized cyclotrimethylene-trinitramine (RDX) which contains 35% of aluminum. For a thermal decomposition model, the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurement is used together with the Friedman isoconversional method for defining the frequency factor and activation energy in the form of Arrhenius rate law that are extracted from the evolution of product mass fraction. As for modelling the impact response, a series of unconfined rate stick data are used to construct the size effect curve which represents the relationship between detonation velocity and inverse radius of the sample. For validation of the modeled results, a cook-off test and a pressure chamber test are used to compare the predicted chemical response of the aluminized RDX that is either thermally or mechanically loaded.

  • In order to operate a search and rescue robot in hazardous area, the robot requires high mobility and adaptable locomotion for moving in unpredictable environments. In this paper, we propose the deformable soft wheel robot that can produce three kinds of driving modes; caterpillar driving mode, normal wheel driving mode, legged-wheel driving mode. The robot changes its driving mode as it faces the various obstacles such as a small gap, stairs etc. Soft film and composite materials are used for fabrication of deformable wheel structure and Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) coil spring actuators are attached on the structure as an artificial muscle. Film lamination and an composite manufacturing process is introduced and the robot design is required to be modified and compromised to applying the manufacturing process. The prototype is developed and tested for verifying feasibility of the deformable wheel locomotion.
