  • Aerodynamic power and torque of wind turbine are highly nonlinear and its operation mode depends on control strategies. Therefore, it is essential to define steady-state curves for the purpose of control and operation of wind turbine system. The steady-state curves of wind turbine can be defined by determining its operating points. In this paper, an algorithm to determine operating points of variable-speed variable-pitch wind turbine is presented on the basis of pitch-to-feather control strategy. And this algorithm is applied to obtain steady-state curves for an 1.5MW wind turbine.

  • In this paper we proposed the aerodynamic numerical analysis with linear matrix inequality theorem of intelligent control, which is believed to be applicable in the application not only a function of the block size and reduced wind speed but itself depends on both the size and the aspect ratio of the structure, not on the total scruton number. In order to improve the accuracy of the results, the optimization curve was optimized for the test to evaluate the response in the time of achieving the results and we focus on the results that found a significant influence from the assumptions used for damage propagation for aircraft structural analysis of composite materials. Finally, the numerical simulations confirmed the effectiveness of the method.

  • Subsonic aerodynamic force and moment characteristics have been determined for parametric groups of launchers. Geometric variables considered in the experimental study were body length, nose planform, fin planform (body-alone contained), number of stage and existence of extrnal booster, All data were obtained for angles of attack from 0 to 27 deg in 3-deg. increments.

  • CFD simulation for Smart-UAV(TR-E2Sl) is performed to analyze its aerodynamic characteristics. Base geometry and several cases, decided by control surfaces being deflected, are simulated. To obtain the better lift characteristics, the elevator should be deflected between 10o and 20o with the incidence angle of the wing 1o.

  • In this paper, we present a method to design a coupled autopilot for STT missiles which have severe aerodynamic cross-coupling. The aerodynamic model is derived in the meneuver plane and, based on that model, an autopilot scheduled by the normal acceleration and the estimated bank angle is designed. Bank angle is obtained by a simple estimator. With the proposed autopilot, it is shown by computer simulations that induced moments are properly compensated and the performance is supiorior to the conventional autopilot.

  • This paper introduces an experimental device which can measure accurate aerodynamic forces without support interference in wide experimental region for wind tunnel test of micro aerial vehicles (MAVs). A stereo pattern recognition (SPR) method was introduced to a magnetic suspension and balance system (MSBS), which can eliminate support interference by levitating the experimental model, to establish wider experimental region; thereby MSBS-SPR integrated system was developed. The SPR method is non-contact, highly accurate three-dimensional position measurement method providing wide measurement range. To evaluate the system performance, a series of performance evaluations including SPR system measurement accuracy and 6 degrees of freedom (DOFs) position/attitude control of the MAV model were conducted. This newly developed system could control the MAV model rapidly and accurately within almost 60mm for translational DOFs and 40deg for rotational DOFs inside of $300{\times}300mm$ test section. In addition, a static wind tunnel test was conducted to verify the aerodynamic force measurement capability. It turned out that this system could accurately measure the aerodynamic forces in low Reynolds number, even for the weak forces which were hard to measure using typical balance system, without making any mechanical contact with the MAV model.

  • The paper presents the surface-modified NACA 2412 airfoil performance with variable cavity characteristics such as size, shape and orientation, by numerically investigated with the pre-validation study. The study attempts to improve the airfoil aerodynamic performance at 30 m/s with a variable angle of attack (AOA) ranging from 0° to 20° under Reynolds number (Re) 4.4×105. Through passive surface control techniques, a boundary layer control strategy has been enhanced to improve flow performance. An intense background survey has been carried out over the modifier orientation, shape, and numbers to differentiate the sub-critical and post-critical flow regimes. The wall-bounded flows along with its governing equations are investigated using Reynolds Average Navier Strokes (RANS) solver coupled with one-equational transport Spalart Allmaras model. It was observed that the aerodynamic efficiency of cavity airfoil had been improved by enhancing maximum lift to drag ratio ((l/d) max) with delayed flow separation by keeping the flow attached beyond 0.25C even at a higher angle of attack. Detailed investigation on the cavity distribution pattern reveals that cavity depth and width are essential in degrading the early flow separation characteristics. In this study, overall general performance comparison, all the cavity airfoil models have delayed stalling compared to the original airfoil.

  • Traditional autopilot design requires an accurate aerodynamic model and relies on a gain schedule to account for system nonlinearities. This paper presents the control architecture applied to a dynamic model inversion at a single flight condition with an on-line neural network (NN) in order to regulate errors caused by approximate inversion. This eliminates the need for an extensive design process and accurate aerodynamic data. The simulation results using a developed full nonlinear 6 degree of freedom model are presented. This paper also presents the stability evaluation for control systems to which NNs were applied. Although feedback can accommodate uncertainty to meet system performance specifications, uncertainty can also affect the stability of the control system. The importance of robustness has long been recognized and stability margins were developed to quantify it. However, the traditional stability margin techniques based on linear control theory can not be applied to control systems upon which a representative non-linear control method, such as NNs, has been applied. This paper presents an alternative stability margin technique for NNs applied to control systems based on the system responses to an inserted gain multiplier or time delay element.

  • In this paper, an integrator based method to estimate the effective wind speed in wind turbine systems is proposed. First, the aerodynamic torque was accurately estimated through a proportional gain based observer where the generator speed is the measured output of the system. The torque signal contains not only useful frequencies of the wind, but also high frequencies and the ones due to structural vibration. The useful information of the wind signal is low frequency. A spectral analysis permitted the determination of the useful frequencies. The high frequencies were then filtered before introducing the torque signal in the wind speed observer. The desired effective wind speed was extracted through an integrator based observer using the previously estimated aerodynamic torque. The strength of the method is to avoid numerical solutions used in literature of the wind speed estimation. The effectiveness of the proposed wind speed estimator and its use to control the generator speed has been tested under turbulent situations using the FAST software (Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence), for large scale Megawatt turbine.
