  • Recently, the recording density of hard disk drives has improved at an annual percentage rate of 100%. Therefore for faster access, higher disk rotational speeds will be required. The influence of the airflow produced by the rotation of a disk on the positioning accuracy has become a serious topic of research and the aerodynamic aspect of hard disk drives is now quite considerable with the increases in recording density and higher rotational speeds. Unsteady airflow in an actual hard disk drive is numerically simulated by using LES(Large Eddy Simulation) technique, we could predicted and aerodynamic mechanism that was related actuators' surroundings in HDD. At a result, with modifying the various shapes of the E-block and Damper, we estimated the characteristic of the influence of airflow in HDDs.

  • In this paper, aerodynamic noise of axial flow fans for outdoor unit of air-conditioner was analyzed by both experiment and numerical simulation. The three-dimensional incompressible turbulent flow was predicted by the commercial computational fluid dynamics code SC/Tetra, while the aeroacoustic noise of an axial flow fan was predicted by FlowNoise. Computations and experiments were performed with two types of axial flow fans, in which very different noise source distributions were presented. The results obtained from this study are expected to show the way to reduce the noise of axial flow fans in industrial applications.

  • The aerodynamic performance of axial flow fans for outdoor unit of air-conditioner is investigated by numerical and experimental approaches in this study. The pressure drop and volumetric flow rate are compared each other in several different conditions and fan speeds. It is shown that the predicted fan performances are quite well matched with the experimental results. It is also shown that the curvature of the fan arc and hub height have significant influences on the flow distribution after hub. By the results of this study, it can be suggested that several ways to improve the aerodynamic performance of the axial flow fan can be found using the numerical analysis.

  • Large amplitude oscillation of steepled main cables usually presents during construction of a long-span bridge. To study this phenomenon, six typical main cables with different cross sections during construction are investigated. Two main foci have been conducted. Firstly, aerodynamic coefficients of a main cable are obtained and compared through simulation and wind tunnel test: (1) to ensure the simulation accuracy, influences of the numerical model's grid size, and the jaggy edges of main cable's cross section on main cable's aerodynamic coefficients are investigated; (2) aerodynamic coefficients of main cables at different wind attack angles are obtained based on the wind tunnel test in which the experimental model is made by rigid plastic using the 3D Printing Technology; (3) then numerical results are compared with wind tunnel test results, and they are in good agreement. Secondly, aerodynamic coefficients of the six main cables at different wind attack angles are obtained through numerical simulation. Then Den Hartog criterion is used to analyze the transverse galloping of main cables during construction. Results show all the six main cables may undergo galloping, which may be an important reason for the large amplitude oscillation of steepled main cables during construction. The flow structures around the main cables indicate that the characteristic of the airflow trajectory over a steepled main cable may play an important role in the galloping generation. Engineers should take some effective measures to control this harmful phenomenon due to the big possibility of the onset of galloping during the construction period.

  • The Strouhal number is an important nondimensional number which is explanatory of aerodynamic instability phenomena. It takes on the different characteristic constant value depending upon the cross-sectional shape of the body being enveloped by the flow. A number of investigations into this subject, especially on the drag test, surface pressure test and hot-wire test, have been carried out under the fixed state of the body in the past. However, almost no investigations concerning the determination of the St on wind-induced vibration of the body have been reported in the past even though the aerodynamic behavior of the body is very important because the construction of wind-sensitive structures is recently on the sharp increase. Based on a series of wind tunnel tests, this paper addresses a new method to determine the Strouhal number of rectangular cylinder in the uniform flow. The central idea of the proposed method is that the Strouhal number can be obtained directly by the aerodynamic behaviors of the body through wind-induced vibration test. The validity of proposed method is evaluated by comparing with the results obtained by previous studies in three B/Ds at attack angle $0^{\circ}$ and a square cylinder with various attack angles. The values and trends of the proposed Strouhal numbers are in good agreements with values of previous studies. And also, the Strouhal numbers of B/D=1.5 and 2.0 with various attack angles are obtained by the proposed method and verified by other method. This proposed method is as good as any other previous methods to obtain the Strouhal number.

  • Noise emitted by driving cars affects our daily life, penetrating wherever man lives or works. There are three types of possible sound emitting processes that are aerodynamic sources, air pumping and tire vibration. In this paper, a theoretical model has been studied to describe the sound radiation by the surface vibration of running tires and experimental verification has been conducted to evaluate sound radiation characteristic due to tire vibration.

  • A recent study for tracing the profiles of supersonic axisymmetric Minimum Length Nozzle with uniform and parallel flow at the exit section, the stagnation temperature is taken into account. The aim of this work is to add optimization algorithm to the supersonic nozzle design in order to get the optimum nozzle shape. The comparisons of the nozzle contours based on the method of characteristics are presented. The specific heats and their ratio vary with the stagnation temperature when this temperature of a perfect gas increases. An application is made for air in a supersonic nozzle.

  • Electric machines for office automation device such as printer and scanner have been required the low noise and vibration performance. Many researches about the low noise and vibration of polygon mirror scanner motor have been also progressed. The noise and vibration of polygon mirror scanner motor can be classified by aerodynamic, structural and electromagnetic. Electromagnetic noise and vibration can be occurred by high cogging torque and nonsinusoidal back EMF. To improve the cogging torque and back EMF characteristic, we apply unequal air-gap. To analyse characteristic of a polygon mirror scanner motor, two dimensional finite element method is used. To minimize the cogging torque of a polygon mirror motor, Kriging based on latin hypercube sampling (LHS) is utilized. As a result, the cogging torque and torque ripple improved while maintaining the back EMF and average torque.
