Aerial Application using a Small RF Controlled Helicopter (IV) - CFD Simulation of Rotor Lift - (소형 무인헬기를 이용한 항공방제기술 (IV) -로터양력의 CFD시뮬레이션 -)

  • Aerial application using an unmanned agricultural helicopter became necessary for both labor saving and timely spraying. In the previous paper, a rotor system was developed and lift capability was evaluated. The experimental results were compared with simulated predictions using the CFD-ACE program. From the simulation, the relative velocity on the top surface of the blade airfoil increased, resulting in the pressure drop. The CFD analyses were revealed that a drag resistance on the leading edge of the airfoil, a wake at the trailing edge, and a positive pressure underneath the bottom surface were observed. As the results of the simulation, total lifts of 56.8, 74.4 and $95.0kg_f$ were obtained at the 6, 8 and $10^{\circ}$ of AAT (angle of attack), respectively. The simulation results agreed reasonably up to $10^{\circ}$ of AAT. However, at a greater AAT $(<12^{\circ})$ the simulated total lift continuously increased to $105kg_f$, comparing with a decreasing experimental total lift due to the lack of engine power. At a stiff angle of $18^{\circ}$ AAT, a wake was observed at the trailing edge of the airfoil. A rated operating condition determined from the previous paper was also verified through the simulation.

  • In this study, in the field of remote sensing, where the scope of application is rapidly expanding to fields such as land monitoring, disaster prediction, facility safety inspection, and maintenance of cultural properties, monitoring of rural space and surrounding environment using UAV is utilized. It was carried out to verify the possibility, and the following main results were derived. First, the aerial image taken with an unmanned aerial vehicle had a much higher image size and spatial resolution than the aerial image provided by the National Geographic Information Service. It was suitable for analysis due to its high accuracy. Second, the more the number of photographed photos and the more complex the terrain features, the more the point cloud included in the aerial image taken with the UAV was extracted. As the amount of point cloud increases, accurate 3D mapping is possible, For accurate 3D mapping, it is judged that a point cloud acquisition method for difficult-to-photograph parts in the air is required. Third, 3D mapping technology using point cloud is effective for monitoring rural space and rural resources because it enables observation and comparison of parts that cannot be read from general aerial images. Fourth, the digital elevation model(DEM) produced with aerial image taken with an UAV can visually express the altitude and shape of the topography of the study site, so it can be used as data to predict the effects of topographical changes due to changes in rural space. Therefore, it is possible to utilize various results using the data included in the aerial image taken by the UAV. In this study, the superiority of images acquired by UAV was verified by comparison with existing images, and the effect of 3D mapping on rural space monitoring was visually analyzed. If various types of spatial data such as GIS analysis and topographic map production are collected and utilized using data that can be acquired by unmanned aerial vehicles, it is expected to be used as basic data for rural planning to maintain and preserve the rural environment.

  • Present chemical application method using a power sprayer has been labor intensive, costly and ineffective. Therefore, a small agricultural unmanned helicopter was suggested to replace the conventional spray system. In this study, conceptual design for developing the helicopter and a consequential prototype were reported. The overall conceptual design was initiated by deciding the type of agricultural helicopter, as the single rotor helicopter with a tail system. As the first step of the designing, an air-cooled, 2-stroke engine was selected and a prototype transmission was designed by determining the rotating speed of main rotor shaft. A 'pusher' type tail rotor system was adapted to balance the reaction torque and reduce the power use. The tail boom length was designed to avoid the rotating trajectory of the main rotor. The RF console consisted of the engine control, attitude control, and emergency control modules. Assembling the prototype concluded the mechanical development of the agricultural helicopter.

Centrifugal Clutch Design for Unmanned Helicopter - Simulation of Optimal Factors - (농용 무인헬리콥터의 원심클러치 설계 - 최적 설계치의 시뮬레이션 -)

  • Aerial application using an agricultural unmanned helicopter was suggested for an alternative against current pesticide application methods. Centrifugal clutches play important roles in the performance and safety of the helicopter operation. A previous study analyzed and verified the power transfer theory of the guide type centrifugal clutch. Based on the clutch theory, optimal designs of the clutch became possible and feasible using a simulation method. Design criteria of the clutch were the power transfer capacity of 24.66 kW(33.5 PS) at the rated engine speed and the engaging range speed of 3,000${\sim}$3,500 rpm. Various designs were accomplished using the simulation. An optimal clutch was simulated by determining the values of spring constant and mass of friction sector, which were 94,700 N/m and 123.7 g, respectively. The design performed the power capacity of 24.86 kW(33.8 PS) and engagement speed of 3,069 rpm, meeting the design criteria. Using the designed clutch, an efficient transfer of the power would be possible for the unmanned agricultural helicopter.

Detection Method of River Floating Debris Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicle and Multispectral Sensors (무인항공기 및 다중분광센서를 이용한 하천부유쓰레기 탐지 기법 연구)

  • This study aims to develop the floating debris detection algorithm using a Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) and multispectral sensors. In addition, the occurrence range of floating debris was estimated by applying the algorithm. An aerial photograph using an unmanned aerial vehicle was used to generate an orthoimage that can calculate the area. A spectrum survey of water, plants litter, polystyrene foam etc. was conducted. After obtaining spectroscopic characteristics of floating debris and water, the River Floating Debris (RFD) index was calculated. And we detected the floating debris through band combination of sensor using RFD. As a result of the RFD application, accumulation zone of floating debris was confirmed at three sites in the orthoimage. It was estimated that a lot of floating debris was accumulated at 0.82 ha ($8,200m^2$), which is corresponding to 3.6% including the accumulation zone.

A Study on the Applicability of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for Underwater Cultural Heritage Survey in Intertidal Zones (조간대에서의 수중문화재 조사를 위한 무인항공기의 적용 가능성에 관한 연구)

  • Intertidal zones, akin to tidal flats, are among the potential areas where underwater cultural heritage might be submerged. However, the shallow depths in these regions present challenges for conventional vessel-based survey methods. Moreover, during low tides, intertidal zones transform into tidal flats, limiting the efficiency of survey efforts due to restricted access and potential risks. As a result, proper underwater cultural heritage surveys encounter difficulties in these environments. In recent times, extensive research is underway to address these issues by investigating underwater cultural heritage surveys in intertidal zones, encompassing diverse fields, including equipment-based investigations. This study aimed to explore the feasibility of utilizing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to conduct intertidal cultural heritage surveys, employing aerial photography and 3D mapping to create detailed orthoimages and 3D models. The study focused on assessing the potential application of these techniques for cultural heritage surveying within intertidal zones. Notably, the survey conducted in Jindo's Naesan-ri demonstrated high-resolution capabilities, enabling the distinction of actual pottery fragments mixed within gravel fields. Similarly, in the survey of Jindo's Byeokpa-hang, it was found that a wooden pillar structure existed in a section about 200m long. The integration of various sensors, including LiDAR, with UAVs allows for diverse investigation possibilities, including bathymetric measurements, and is expected to facilitate the acquisition of varied datasets for further research and assessment.

Fate of Fenitrothion aerially applied to the Pine Forest (항공살포에 따른 Fenitrothion의 산림환경 중 행적)

  • Fate of fenitrothion aerially sprayed to control pine wood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) was studied in a forest of Haman area. And the monitoring of fenitrothion was conducted in a stream flowed from forest area of Gijang sprayed fenitrothion. Fenitrothion 50% EC was diluted 100 times and applied two or three times using helicopter in Haman and Gijang, respectively. Average fenitrothion deposits on forest floor ranged from 6% of standard aerial application rate. Following to the second application, fenitrothion deposits in the pine needle ranged from 0.6 to 0.9 mg/kg and then rapidly decreased to 0.01 mg/kg after 109 days. Deposits on the plant washed off by rainfall and reached to soil surface was 1.3% of the application rate. All of fenitrothion on the ground resided in the forest floor covering the soil surface, where fenitrothion residues were decreased to a tenth at 109 days after the second application, but they were not detected in sol beneath it. And the only low level of fenitrothion residues, 0.0009 mg/L, was detected in runnel of the experimental forest just after aerial application. The concentration of fenitrothion in effluent from Gijang area was less than detection limit (0.0001 mg/L) during the entire period.

Fate of Acetamiprid and Imidacloprid aerially applied to the Pine Forest (항공살포에 따른 Acetamiprid와 Imidacloprid의 산림환경 중 행적)

Acetamiprid 20% SL or imidacloprid 20% DC were diluted 100 times and applied two times as rate of 50 L/ha using an aircraft of Bell 206 L helicopter. Average acetamiprid deposits on forest floor ranged from 2 to 4% of standard aerial application rate. Following to the second application, acetamiprid deposits in the pine needle ranged 1.8~8.5 mg/kg and then gradually decreased to 1.2~2.1 mg/kg after 48 days. Deposits on the plant washed off by rainfall and reached to soil surface was ca. 17% of the application rate. All of acetamiprid on the ground resided in the forest floor covering the soil surface, where acetamiprid residues were decreased to a quarter at 48 days after the second application, but they were not detected in soil beneath it. And the only low level of acetamiprid residues, 0.0003 mg/L, was detected in the reservoir nearby the experimental forest on the day of aerial application. The acetamiprid detection was presumably due to spray drift. And average imidacloprid deposits on forest floor ranged from 1 to 3% of standard aerial application rate. Following to the second application, imidacloprid deposits in the pine needle analysed very low concentration of 0.1 mg/kg, but the amount of imidacloprid in wash-off in standard and two-fold treatment were ca. 8% and 4% of the application rate, respectively. Most of imidacloprid on the ground also resided in the forest floor, where imidacloprid residues were decreased to a twentieth at 111 days after the second application, and they were detected below 0.5% of the application rate in sol beneath it. And the low level of imidacloprid, 0.0003~0.0017 mg/L, were detected in the streams in the experimental forest. It was not to the level of contamination concerns.

Aerial Application Tests with Some Low toxicity Insecticides Against the Fall Webworm, Hyphantria cunea Drury (Lepidoptera: Arctiidae) (저독성약제(低毒性藥劑)를 이용(利用)한 미국흰불나방의 항공방제효과(航空防除效果))

  • Aerial application tests with a biological insecticide (Thuricide$^{(R)}$) and two low toxicity insecticides, Diflubenzuron (Dimilin$^{(R)}$) and Triflumuron (Alsystin$^{(R)}$) were carried out against the fall webworm (Hyphantria cunea Drury). For experimental application by helicopter, dilutions of 30x and 45x Thuricide, 180x and 240x Alsystin, and 180x Dimilin were utilized. The solutions were applied at a rate of 30 liters per hectare. The results are as follows: 1) All treatments, Dimilin 25% wp, Thuricide wp, and Alsystin 25% wp, were found to very effec tive against fall webworm larvae. Percentages of mortality averaged between 93.9% and 97%. 2) No significant differences in percentages of larval kill were found between dilutions of Thuricide (30x and 45x) or Alsystin (180x and 240x). 3) Assessment of parasite densities in the treated areas 35 days after treatment indicated that percentages of reduction for all five species found, including Brachymeria lasus(Walker) (=obscurata [Walker]), were lower than for areas treated with the conventional insecticide Diplox$^{(R)}$ (trichlorfon) 25% wp. In particular, the percentage of reduction in Thuricide-treated areas was only 21% as compared with the untreated (control) areas. 4) Aerial applications of Dimilin were very effective and economical for control of the fall webworm by comparison with [aerial] applications of Thuricide.
