  • Since the basic built-in-test, prognostic health management (PHM) has evolved into more sophisticated and complex systems with advanced warning and failure detection devices. Aerospace and military systems, manufacturing equipment, structural monitoring, automotive electronic systems and telecommunication systems are examples of fields in which PHM has been fully utilized. Nowadays, the automotive electronic system has become more sophisticated and increasingly dependent on accurate sensors and reliable microprocessors to perform vehicle control functions which help to detect faults and to predict the remaining useful life of automotive parts. As the complication of automotive system increases, the need for intelligent PHM becomes more significant. Given enormous potential to be developed lays ahead, this paper presents findings and discussions on the trends of automotive PHM research with the expectation to offer opportunity for further improving the current technologies and methods to be applied into more advanced applications.

  • This paper proposes a framework to determine the routes of multiple unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to conduct multiple tasks in different locations considering the survivability of the vehicles. The routing problem can be formulated as the vehicle routing problem (VRP) with different cost matrices representing the trade-off between the safety of the UAVs and the mission completion time. The threat level for a UAV at a certain location was modeled considering the detection probability and the shoot-down probability. The minimal-cost path connecting two locations considering the threat level and the flight distance was obtained using the Dijkstra algorithm in hexagonal cells. A case study for determining the optimal routes for a persistent multi-UAVs surveillance and reconnaissance missions given multiple enemy bases was conducted and its results were discussed.

  • Real-time traffic detection scheme based on Computer Vision is capable of efficient traffic control using automatically computed traffic information and obstacle detection in moving automobiles. Traffic information is extracted by segmenting vehicle region from road images, in traffic detection system. In this paper, we propose the advanced segmentation of vehicle from road images using multiple local region information. Because multiple local region overlapped in the same lane is processed sequentially from small, the traffic detection error can be corrected.

  • Static inverters are essential devices onboard of rolling stock. State-of-the-art static inverters have an impact on both rail infrastructure and vehicle maintenance due to their new topology with new features. The paper describes two important aspects as examples of new features available in state-of-the-art static inverters: active input current control and the effects on the rail infrastructure as well as the detection of the state of charge and the state of health of batteries to simplify vehicle maintenance.

  • Vehicle braking in non-electrified rail systems wastes energy. Advanced flywheel technology presents a way to capture and reuse this braking energy to improve vehicle efficiency and so reduce the operating costs and environmental impact of diesel trains. This paper highlights the suitability of flywheels for rail vehicle applications, and proposes a novel mechanical transmission system to apply regenerative braking using a flywheel energy storage device. A computational model is used to illustrate the operation and potential benefits of the energy storage system.

  • This study makes a relative comparison of the results of tensile test and quasi-static analysis using AGL(Adjuster Guide Loop) model that plays a role in adjusting the height of shoulder belt, of the components of the vehicle seatbelt system and attempts to propose a method of reducing the error rate of the quasi-static analysis technique effectively. This study selects two major factors affecting the result of an analysis, draws the result of analysis through the method of experimental design, one of the statistical techniques and understands the contribution rate of the major factors affecting the result of the analysis through ANOVA(Analysis of Variance).

  • In today's automotive industry, there exist several systems that help drivers reduce the possibility of accidents, such as the ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance System). The ADAS helps drivers make correct and quick decisions during dangerous situations. This study analyzed the performance of the IMM (Interacting Multiple Model) method based on multiple Kalman filters using the data acquired from a driving simulator. An IMM algorithm is developed to identify the current discrete state of neighboring vehicles using the sensor data and the vehicle dynamics. In particular, the driving modes of the neighboring vehicles are classified by the cruising and maneuvering modes, and the transition between the states is modeled using a Markovian switching coefficient. The performance of the IMM algorithm is analyzed through realistic simulations where a target vehicle executes sudden lane change or acceleration maneuver.

  • Today, cars have developed into intelligent automobiles that combine advanced control equipment and IT technology to provide driving assistance and convenience to users. These vehicles provide infotainment services to the driver, but this does not improve the safety of the driver. Accordingly, V2X communication, which forms a network between a vehicle and a vehicle, between a vehicle and an infrastructure, or between a vehicle and a human, is drawing attention. Therefore, various techniques for improving channel estimation performance without changing the IEEE 802.11p standard have been proposed, but they do not satisfy the packet error rate (PER) performance required by the C-ITS service. In this paper, we analyze existing channel estimation techniques and propose a new channel estimation scheme that achieves better performance than existing techniques. It does this by applying the updated matrix for the data pilot symbol to the construct data pilot (CDP) channel estimation scheme and by further performing the interpolation process in the frequency domain. Finally, through simulations based on the IEEE 802.11p standard, we confirmed the performance of the existing channel estimation schemes and the proposed channel estimation scheme by coded PER.
