  • The free vibration analyses of the isotropic and CFRP laminated composite rectangular plates with point supports at the fix edge is performed by FEM. We showed optimal position and mode shape of point supports that maximized fundamental natural frequency of the isotropic and CFRP laminated composite rectangular plates by each aspect ratio and the number of point supports.

  • In the present study, a new simple first-order shear deformation theory is presented for laminated composite plates. Moreover, the number of unknowns of this theory is the least one comparing with the traditional first-order and the other higher-order shear deformation theories. Equations of motion and boundary conditions are derived from Hamilton's principle. Analytical solutions of simply supported antisymmetric cross-ply and angle-ply laminates are obtained and the results are compared with the exact three-dimensional (3D) solutions and those predicted by existing theories. It can be concluded that the proposed theory is accurate and simple in solving the static bending and free vibration behaviors of laminated composite plates.

  • Even though the longitudinally stiffened laminated composite plates with closed section ribs should be an effective system for axially compressed members, the existing researches on the applications of closed-section ribs, especially for the laminated composite plates, are not sufficient. This study is aimed to examine the influence of the sectional stiffness of U-shaped ribs on the buckling modes and strengths of laminated composite plates. Applying the orthotropic plates with eight layers of the layup $[(0^{\circ})_4]_s$ and $[(0^{\circ}/90^{\circ})_2]_s$, 3-dimensional finite element models for the U-rib stiffened plates were setup by using ABAQUS and then a series of eigenvalue analyses were conducted. From the parametric studies, the minimum required ply thicknesses as well as the buckling strengths were presented for the analysis models. The buckling strengths were compared with the theoretical critical stress equation for simply supported plates based on the Classical laminated plate theory. This study will contribute to the future study for evaluating the minimum required stiffness and optimum design of U-rib stiffened plates.

  • A robust optimization procedure is applied to determine the design of the laminated composite plates with buckling constraints. In order to investigate the variation effect to the whole performance of a structure, both design variables and system parameters are assumed as random variables about their nominal values. The robust optimization method has advantages that the mean value and the variation of the performance function are controlled simultaneously and the second order sensitivity information is not required. Considering the information of uncertainty, robust optima for the buckling load of the laminated composite plates with cut-out is obtained. The robustness of the structures is compared to that of the deterministic optimization using scaling factors.

  • In this work, the bending and dynamic behaviors of advanced composite plates resting on variable visco-Pasternak foundations are studied using a simple shear deformation integral plate model. The research is carried out with a view to a three-parameter foundation including the influences of the variable Winkler coefficient, the constant Pasternak coefficient and the damping coefficient of the elastic medium. The present theory uses a displacement field with integral terms instead of derivative terms by including also the shear deformation effect without introducing the shear correction factors. The equations of motion for advanced composite plates are obtained using the Hamilton principle. Analytical solutions for the bending and dynamic analysis are deduced for simply supported plates resting on variable visco-Pasternak foundations. Some numerical results are presented to demonstrate the impact of material index, elastic foundation type, and damping coefficient of the foundation, on the bending and dynamic responses of advanced composite plates.

  • This study deals with an enhanced assumed strain (EAS) three-dimensional element for free vibration analysis of laminated composite and sandwich structures. The three-dimensional finite element (FE) formulation based on the EAS method for composite structures shows excellence from the standpoints of computational efficiency, especially for distorted element shapes. Using the EAS FE formulation developed for this study, the effects of side-to-thickness ratios, aspect ratios and ply orientations on the natural frequency are studied and compared with the available elasticity solutions and other plate theories. The numerical results obtained are in good agreement with those reported by other investigators. The new approach works well for the numerical experiments tested, especially for complex structures such as sandwich plates with laminated composite faces.

  • Some laminate orientations have decreasing values of $D_{16}$, $B_{16}$, $D_{26}$ and $B_{26}$ stiffnesses as the ply number increases. For such plates, the fiber orientations given above behave as specially orthotropic plates and simple formulas developed by the senior author. Most of the bridge and building slabs on girders have large aspect ratios. For such cases further simplification is possible by neglecting the effect of the longitudinal moment terms(Mx) on the relevant partial differential equations of equilibrium. In this paper, the result of the study on the subject problem is presented.

  • Based on the Kirchhoff hypothesis of normal-remain-normal, the present work analyses piezoelectric laminated plates, wherein poled piezoelectric laminae are transversely isotropic and function as actuators. A quadric electric field is induced inside a piezoelectric lamina under a given applied voltage and mechanical bending. The governing equations for the piezoelectric laminated plate derived from the principle of virtual work in terms of the electric enthalpy have the same forms as those for a conventional composite laminated plate. We use rectangular sandwich plates of Al/PZT/Al and PZT/Al/PZT with four simply supported edges to demonstrate the prediction of the maximum bending stress in the PZT layer. The analytic solutions are verified by three-dimensional finite element analysis.
