  • This study has been performed to evaluate the possibility of utilizing stone powder sludges from stone quarry and manufacturing plant as adsorbents for heavy metals in industrial wastewater. The stone powder sludges from stone quarry (IS-01) have the most effective adsorption capacity (above 95% of initial concentrations) under the given experimental conditions of reaction times (Pb : 15 min, Cu : 2 hr, Zn : 48 hr), initial acidity of solution (pH>3) and dosage (sludge/liquid ratio : 0.02). The stone powder sludges from manufacturing plant (CW-01) show relatively high adsorption capacity (about 95% of initial concentrations) only for Pb with a reaction times of 12 hours, initial acidity of solution (pH>3) and dosage (sludge/liquid ratio : 0.02). The stone powder sludges (IS-01) from stone quarry having relatively excellent adsorption capacity under the given experimental conditions show their potential utilization as heavy metal adsorbents.

  • Eutrophication caused by the excessive supply of phosphorus to water has been considered as one of the most important environmental problems. In this study, the titanium mesostrcture, which was prepared with the template of different surfactant, was tested to confirm the applicability as an adsorbent for phosphorus removal and evaluate the phosphorus removal efficiency. X-ray diffraction analysis, phosphorus adsorption istotherm and kinetic test were performed for the titanium mesostructure, synthesized at various base material/surfactant molar ratio and with different surfactant templates. From the results, we found that mesostructure was synthesized at the base material/surfactant molar ratio of 1/0.25 was most uniformly and clearly formed and thus the adsorption capacity was also maximized.

  • In this research, I carried out the adsorption and removal test of Pb, Ni, Co and Cu ions using organic substances spread out any where in the nature which can be obtained easily from our neighbor-such as Paulownia coreana, Pinus densiflora, Juniperus chinesis, Quercus dentata, Magnolia kobus, Platanus occidentalis, Gingko biloba, Diospyros kaki leaves. As the result of the research to find the best optional condition for the adsorption and removal, shows that the adsorption and removal ratio of Pb ion by a Paulownia coreana raw leaves is 99% at $70^{\circ}C$, those of Ni ion and Co ion by Magnolia kobus formalin treatment leaves are 79% at $70^{\circ}C$, 97% at $40^{\circ}C$ respectively. And that of Cu ion by Platanus occidentalis treatment leaves is 97% at $50^{\circ}C$ in mixed solution. As the result of comparing the removal ratio by raw leaves and formalin treatment leaves, the removal ratio of treatment is 30~90% more effective than raw leaves in most cases. And I concluded Pb > Cu > Co > Ni ion in multiple solution and Co > Ni > Cu >Pb ion in single solution after testing adsorption and removal ratio of mixed solution separately as time goes by. In general, the reactions were completed within first 5 minutes. The test result of measuring the hydrolysable tannin content of each leaf shows that an overcup Quercus dentata is 11.36%, a Diospyros kaki is 10.81% and the rest of them are 2.49~4.12% in raw leaves cases. In treatment leaves cases, an overcup Quercus dentata is 3.23% and the others are less than 1%.

  • In this work, DAY (Dealuminated Y-type) zeolites were prepared to be used as easily regenerable and thermally stable adsorbent substituting activated carbon. NaY zeolites were transformed into DAY zeolites through ion exchange, calcination, steaming, and acid leaching. Calcination temperature and time, and steaming time were changed to increase the Si/Al ratio and maintain crystallinity. Adsorption of VOCs were done for prepared DAY, commercial NaY and Hisiv 1000 in air with relative humidity of 50%. The DAY zeolite prepared by calcination at $520^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs and steaming for 7 hrs had a same structure and a Si/Al ratio of 80.4. Its adsorption capacity for water vapor was 10% of NaY, indicating its hydrophobicity. Its adsorption capacity for MEK was 0.8 times of Hisiv 1000, that for toluene 1.6 times, and that for EA 1.3 times.

  • The binding of heavy metal ions onto cross-linked chitosan in dilute aqueous solution has been investigated as a function of pH (4.0 and 7.0), agitation period (10-180min) and concentration of various metal cations (5, 10, 50 and 100ppm). In order to obtain adsorbents that are insoluble and stable, and prevent the dissolution loss of chitosan into an acidic aqueous solution, chitosan flakes were cross-linked with epichlorohydrine (ECH) and its adsorption behavior was compared with that of the non cross-linked chitosan. An advantage of ECH is that it does not eliminate the cationic amine functional group of chitosan. In terms of adsorption ratio, the chitosan cross-linked at an ECH was inferior to original chitosan and was found that chitosan has a selectivity much remarkable than the cross-linked chitosan in low concentrated metal solutions. However, no significant decreases in the adsorption ratios were observed between the cross-linked ECH-chitosan and the non cross-linked chitosan concerning the adsorption of $Ni^{2+}$, $Co^{2+}$, $Pb^{2+}$ and $Zn^{2+}$ acidic solution.

  • Under accelerated industrial developments environment pollution comes out to be very stirious. Especially the ions of heavy metal from wastewater, even if they are minimal, accumulated in ecology circle and do finally injury to human health. The general process for removal of heavy metals include coagulation and following sedimentation, ion -exchange and active carbon adsorption and sedimentation that applicate in popular, needs the expense of coagulant the additional treatment of sludge on the general process of coagulation and sedimentation. It is also a serious problem that the second pollution caused by coagulant. However chelating adsorption that uses natural chelating high- molecular compound has not pollution problem Among chelating high- molecules, the diminishing chitin that contained in crustaceans as crawfish and crab in our country with affluent water resources are easy to get. So it is advantageous to use this ubiquitous material for removing heavy metals because we could reuse natural resource. In this research, the author tested the effectiveness of the adsorption and removal of heavy metal ions by chitin and its derivatives. Chitin and cellulose became beads and used as flocculant, in this test. The results are as follows . First, bead showed higher removal ratio than powder in the comparative test on adsorbents such as chitin, chitosan and cellulose. Secondly, in the variety test by the kinds of adsorbent and time. chitosan bead and cellulose bead that showed the highest removal ratio. One hour need to remove the ions of heavy metal. Thirdly, the results of the adsorption degree test by pH revealed high removal ratio adsorption of chitin, cellulose and chitosan bead in alkalin condition but chitosan bead in acidic condition.

  • The adsorption of phenolic compound resorcinol on activated carbons prepared from Moringa oleifera (Drumstick bark) has been investigated. Activated carbon was prepared by impregnating Moringa oleifera with 50% phosphoric acid in the ratio of 1:1 and 1:2(w/w), designated as MOAC1 and MOAC2. Equilibrium and isotherm studies were carried out. The influences of variables such as contact time, initial concentration of resorcinol, carbon dosage in the solution on percentage adsorption and adsorption capacity of the bark have been analysed. The equilibration time was found to be 4 h. Kinetics of resorcinol onto activated carbons was checked for pseudo first order and pseudo second order model. It was found that the adsorption of resorcinol follows pseudo second order kinetics for both MOAC1 and MOAC2. The isotherm data were correlated with isotherm models, namely Langmuir and Freundlich. Adsorption isotherms were satisfactorily fitted by both the Langmuir and Freundlich model for MOAC1 and MOAC2.

  • Vacuum swing adsorption (VSA) is a promising treatment method for volatile organic compounds (VOCs). This study focuses on a VSA process for regenerating activated carbon spent with VOCs, and then investigates its adsorption capacities. Toluene was selected as the test VOC molecule, and the VSA regeneration experiments results were compared to the thermal swing adsorption process. Cyclic adsorption-desorption experiments were performed using a lab-scale apparatus with commercial activated carbon (Samchully Co.). The VSA regeneration was performed in air (0.5 L/min) at 363.15 K and 13,332 Pa. The comparative results depicted that in terms of VSA regeneration, it was found that after the fifth regeneration, about a 90% regeneration ratio was maintained. These experiments thus confirm that the VSA regeneration process has good recovery while operating at low temperatures (363.15 K) and 13,332 Pa.

  • The study was performed under the various conditions, such as the edible parts and particle sizes of Allium. The concentrations, the temperartures, and the pH of heavy metal solutions to investigated their adsorption capacity of heavy metals by genus Allium. The adsorption amount of Pb by Allium in the aqueous soluton was apparently higher than that of Ni and Cu by them. The larger the particle sloe of welsh onion and shallot was, the higher the adsorption of Cu was. The adsorptlons of Cu, Ni and sorption ratio was not different. As the temperature increased, the amount of heavy metal adsorption increased in general, but the adsorption of Ni by welsh onion and wild garlic and leek, Cu by shallot, wild garlic and leek decreased. Adsorption of Pb to Allium was not affected by the different values of pH, and adsorptions of Ni and Cu were greatly affected by those of pH. Especially, the higher the pH was, the greater the Ni adsorption to Allium was, and the lower the pH was, the higher the Cu adsorption was. The correlation between the amount of components in edible parts of Allium and that of adsorption of heavy metals was significantly high In amino acids containing sulfhydryl group(-SH) and vitamin B2.
