Purpose : This study aimed to investigate the effects of health science majors' communication skills on their adjustment to college life. Methods : The subjects were 336 college students majoring in health science at colleges located in Busan. The survey's questionnaire comprised 38 items, including 15 items for communication skills and 19 items for adjustment to college life. Results : In the gender-based comparison of communication skills and adjustment to college life, female students had better communication skills, with overall higher scores than male students for the understanding others and communication. In the age-based comparison of communication skills and adjustment to college life, students aged 21 to 22 showed the best communication skills, while students aged 18 to 20 exhibited the least communication skills. In terms of adjustment to college life, those aged 25 or older scored the highest, and those aged 21 to 22 scored the lowest. In the school-year-based comparison of communication skills and adjustment to college life, third- and first-year students showed the best and least communication skills, respectively. Overall, third- and fourth-year students were more adjusted at adjusting to college life than first- and second-year students. Third-year students also scored the highest in academic adjustment, whereas second-year students scored the lowest. In terms of relationships between the students' communication skills and their adjustment to college life, communication skills were positively correlated with the following subdomains: understanding of others, self-expression, and communication. Communication skills also showed a positive correlation with adjustment to the college environment, including personal-emotional adjustment. Conclusions : The present study found that communication skills did not significantly affect health science majors' adjustment to college life. However, given that communication skills are an essential factor for effective work performance and greater job satisfaction, it is recommended that colleges provide students with relevant education and experiences to help them enhance communication skills while in school.
This study explored the buffering effect of family resilience between family stress and adjustment of single parent family based on family resilience approach. Results of the study were as followed: First, single parents who had a lower level of family stress and a higher lever of family resilience reported a higher level of family adjustment. Second, family stress especially economic stress and relational stress influenced negatively on adjustment of single parent family. Family belief system, organizational pattern and communication processes of the three sub-factors of family resilience influenced positively on family adjustment. However the sub-factors of family resilience had more powerful effects than family stress. Third, family belief system, organizational pattern and communication processes of the three sub-factors of family resilience had a moderating effect between family adjustment and psychological stress and between family adjustment and relational stress. Especially the three sub-factors of family resilience had a buffering effect between family adjustment and relational stress. The results of this study had important implication for theory, research, and practice. The study showed that adjustment of single parent family could be significantly explained by family resilience rather than family stress. Accordingly strength perspective-based intervention focused on family resilience would be more effective than deficit perspective-based intervention based on family stress.
The problem addressed by this study were to explore the effect of hardiness on psychosocial adjustment of persons with a colostomy and to identify factors which influence that psychosocial adjustment. The purpose was to suggest a theoretical base for the planning of supportive nursing interventions to increase the level of adjustment. Among members of the Korea Ostomy Association, 34 subjects who had undergone colostomy from March, 1990 to March, 1991 were selected as the sample. Data were collected from April 8 to May 8, 1991 using a mailed questionnaire. The instruments used for this study were the Health -Related Hardiness Scale(Pollock, 1984) and the Psychosocial Adjustment to illness Scale (Derogatis, 1975). ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient and Stepswise Multiple Regression were used for data analysis. The results of the study are summarized as follows. 1. Hardiness was significantly related to psychosocial adjustment(p=0.009). That is, the higher the hardiness, the higher the level of psychosocial adjustment. 2. Among the demographic variables, only economic level was significantly related to the level of psychosocial adjustment. (p=0.005). 3. The important factors influencing the level of psychosocial adjustment of persons with a colostomy were economic level, commitment, challenge (subconcepts of hardiness). Therefore, in order to increase the level of the psychosocial adjustment, it might be helpful to provide them with hardiness training to strengthen their commitment and their challenge.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of children's self-esteem on their school adjustment, focusing on the mediation of peer attachment. A total of 2,200 3rd grade children from the third Korea Child-Adolescent Panel Survey participated in this study. The instruments used in this study were the Self-esteem Scale, Peer Attachment Scale, and School Adjustment Scale. The collected data were analyzed by using a Student's t -test, Pearson's partial correlation, simple regression, and hierarchical multiple regression with SPSS ver. 16.0 software. The main results of this study are as follows: first, the boys had higher self-esteem, peer attachment, and school adjustment scores than the girls. Second, there was a significant positive correlation between children's self-esteem and peer attachment as well as a significant positive correlation between children's self-esteem and school adjustment. Further, there was a significant positive correlation between children's peer attachment and school adjustment. Finally, children's self-esteem exerted positive effects on their peer attachment, and children's peer attachment had a positive influence on their school adjustment. The effect of children's self-esteem on their school adjustment was partially mediated by their peer attachment. These findings provide preliminary evidence that the relationships between children's self-esteem and school adjustment may be mediated by their peer attachment.

For achieving the purpose, the study established three research questions: What are the relationships among self-control, self-efficacy, and school life adjustment, is there any statistically significant influence of self-control and self-efficacy on school life adjustment, and is there any mediating effect of self-efficacy in the relationship between self-control and school life adjustment, 276 fifth graders attending three elementary schools in Busan were administrated self-control scale, self-efficacy scale, and school life adjustment scale. The collected data was analyzed by correlation, stepwise multiple regression, and three-step regression analysis. And the regression analyses were separately performed on total and subscale scores. The main results were as the follows. First, there were statistically significant correlations among self-control, self-efficacy including two subscales, and school life adjustment including five subscales. Second, self-control and self-efficacy statistically and significantly influenced school life adjustment and five subscales. Finally, self-efficacy partially mediated the relationship between self-control and school life adjustment including five subscales. And discussions on the results were presented.

The objective of this study was to examine multicultural family children's adjustment process to kindergarten and differences in their adjustment among time points. For these purpose, we conducted interviews and a questionnaire survey with teachers in charge of 3-5-year-old young children from multicultural families at public and private kindergartens in Gwangju, Jeollanamdo and Daejeon. According to the results of this study, multicultural family children adjusted themselves to kindergarten through four weeks' daily life in the kindergarten. In daily work adjustment, they showed some difficulty in Week 2 but their adjustment improved rapidly in Week 3 and Week 4. Self adjustment and peer adjustment also improved notably in Week 3 and Week 4. In pro-social adjustment, the children showed difficulty in Week 2, improvement in Week 3, and again difficulty in Week 4. These results suggest that, by responding to the teacher's sensitivity and intimacy, young children in multicultural families have a pattern of adjustment similar to that of young children in Korea families.

Recent years have witnessed an increasing number of alternative school students in Korea. However, few studies have empirically examined these students' school adjustment and peer relationship skills. To address this gap in the literature, this study examines the effects of individual characteristics, family characteristics and peer relationship skills on these students' school adjustment. Four aspects of school adjustment were measured as dependent variables. These four aspects included peer relationship adjustment, relationships with teachers, school environment adjustment, and schoolwork attitude adjustment. The peer relationship skills included three components, namely initiative, mutual closeness, and order awareness. Data were collected from 323 alternative middle and high school students through a structured questionnaire. The statistical analysis methods included descriptive statistics and a hierarchical regression analysis using SPSS WIN 19.0. According to the results, peer relationship skills as well as family background characteristics, including the age of the father, the education level of the father, the family economic level, and the number of close family members, had significant effects on school adjustment. The results highlight the importance of peer relationship skills for these students' successful school adjustment and have important policy and theoretical implications.
