  • We propose a heuristic buffer management scheme that uses both positive and negative acknowledgments to provide scalability and reliability. Under our scheme, most receiver nodes only send negative acknowledgments to their repair nodes to request packet retransmissions while some representative nodes also send positive acknowledgments to indicate which packets can be discarded from the repair node's buffer. Our scheme provides scalability because it significantly reduces the number of feedbacks sent by the receiver nodes. In addition, it provides fast recovery of transmission errors since the packets requested from the receiver nodes are almost always available in their buffers. Our scheme also reduces the number of additional retransmissions from the original sender node or upstream repair nodes. These features satisfy the original goal of treebased protocols since most packet retransmissions are performed within a local group.

  • In this paper, we present a scheme for the improving reliable transport and the efficient multicast support in mobile environment. The proposed scheme solves a problem of TCP layer resulted from mobility by using a Representative FA. RFA has a mechanism like a snoop module which has a cache and can provide retransmission of a multicast packet lost and solve the rock implosion problem. Also, we present an additional IGMP message. By using it, We can remove a delay for IGMP query cycle and serve a multicast service more promptly.

  • Sensor nodes in Wireless sensor network have limited resources and consume almost all energy to the communication. For its traffic feature as a burst traffic type toward a sink node, it has high probability to network congestion. Network congestion causes packet drops and retransmission of dropped packets draws energy consumption. In particular, the loss of packet that is from the sensor node far away from a sink node requires additional energy consumption by frequent retransmission. This paper presents a traffic control mechanism that determines packet transfer by considering priority of packet and congestion level as well as hop count. Analysis of proposed mechanism by simulation demonstrated that it improved energy efficiency.

  • In this paper, we combine the Hybrid-Automatic Repeat reQuest (HARQ) algorithm with joint Tx and Rx antenna selection based on the reliability of the individual antennas links. The cyclic redundancy check (CRC) is applied on the data before being encoded using the Turbo encoder. In the receiver the CRC is used to detect errors of each antenna stream and to decide whether a retransmission is required or not. The receiver feeds back the transmitter with the Tx antennas ordering and the acknowledgement of each antenna (ACK or NACK). If the number of ACK antennas is higher than the NACK antennas, then the retransmission takes place from the ACK antennas using the Chase Combining (CC). If the number of the NACK antennas is higher than the ACK antennas then the ACK antennas are used to retransmit the data streams using the CC algorithm and additional NACK antennas are used to retransmit the remaining streams using Incremental Redundancy (IR, i.e. the encoder rate is reduced). Furthermore, the HARQ is used with the I-BLAST (Iterative-BLAST) which grantees a high transmission rate.

  • Multimedia content is very sensitive to packet loss and therefore multimedia streams are typically protected against packet loss, either by supporting retransmission requests or by adding redundant forward error correction (FEC) data. However, the redundant FEC information introduces significant additional bandwidth requirements, as compared to the bitrate of the original video stream. Especially on wireless and mobile networks, bandwidth availability is limited and variable. In this article, an adaptive FEC (A-FEC) system is presented whereby the redundancy rate is dynamically adjusted to the packet loss, based on feedback messages from the client. We present a statistical model of our A-FEC system and validate the proposed system under different packet loss conditions and loss probabilities. The experimental results show that 57-95%bandwidth gain can be achieved compared with a static FEC approach.

  • In this paper, an error-detection-coding-aided iterative hard decision interference cancellation (EDC-IHIC) scheme for multiple-input multiple-output systems employing hybrid automatic repeat request (HARQ) for multi-packet transmission is developed and investigated. In the EDC-IHIC scheme, only packets identified as error-free by the EDC are submitted to the interference cancellation (IC) stage for cancellation from the received signals. Therefore, the possibility of error propagation, including inter-transmission error propagation, can be eliminated using EDC-IHIC. Because EDC must be implemented in systems that employ HARQ to determine packet retransmission, error propagation can be prevented without the need for additional redundancy. The results of simulations conducted herein verify that the EDC-IHIC scheme outperforms conventional hard decision IC schemes in terms of the packet error rate in various environments.

  • Most of the current research works on high-technology is being carried on to provide ubiquitous services to people. To make that possible, ubiquitous computing networks should be deployed in the first place, where ubiquitous sensor network (USN) will take a very big role. This paper is devoted to introduce a new transmission technique to make USN more independent and reliable as an infra-structure for ubiquitous services. The proposed scheme can elevate the network performance by ensuring the reliability of data transmission. Especially, the proposed scheme can reduce network traffic and communication cost by detecting data error without additional data and communication. In addition, it has an advantage of using the legacy routing protocols.

  • This study is to consider the major policy issues related to 3DTV in terms of the platform projects, not the terminal and equipment manufacture. It reviews what problems the 3D policy in terms of the platform projects has posed so far, and discusses the issues that may appear when the 3D TV is commercialized in the broadcasting market. The major issues dealt in the study include the frequency policy of the terrestrial platform, the additional services activation of the pay platform players, the retransmission policy of terrestrial broadcasting, and the advertising market policy.

  • Safety-related messages are propagated in form of broadcasting among vehicles in vehicle safety communication. There is the broadcast storm problem in high density vehicle environments. To solve this problem, a distance-based broadcast scheme has been proposed. It causes a serious problem such as retransmission delay in low density vehicle environments since it requires additional defer time to rebroadcast messages. This paper proposes a distance and random-based broadcast scheme. The proposed scheme selects a random time from zero to the defer time that estimated depending on the distance between sending and receiving vehicles. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme requires shorter defer time and less rebroadcasting message than existing schemes.

  • The cluster structure reduces the number of retransmission messages, when a broadcast to all hosts in ad hoc network is needed. A cluster maintenance scheme is employed to preserve this advantage from time to time. However, most of the cluster maintenance schemes require additional control messages for cluster reformation as well as control messages for acquiring neighbor information. This mitigates the advantages of employing cluster structure in ad hoc network. In this paper, a cluster maintenance scheme which forces only clusterheads to broadcast control messages during hello time is proposed. When the cluster reformation is needed, the proposed scheme employs a strategy to reduce the control messages to a minimum. In these processes, the proposed scheme doesn't violate the definition of 2-cluster and produces the clusters in fully distributed method. The simulation results prove that our scheme is better than LCC(1).
