The objective of this study is firstly to frame up the seismic safety of concrete gravity dams. It is necessary to analyze seismic response and evaluate seismic performance of concrete gravity dams during earthquake. In this study, seismic damage and dynamic analysis of concrete gravity dams using SAP2000 program are peformed. Additional dynamic water pressure due to earthquake was considered as additional mass for numerical seismic analysis. But, further research will be necessary for the seismic stability of dams.

We investigate the mass and energy of erupting plasma observed in X-rays and EUV, which is associated with a coronal mass ejection (CME) and an X-class flare. The erupting plasma was observed by both the X-ray telescope (XRT) on Hinode and the Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) on Solar Dynamic Observatory (SDO). We estimate the emission measures of the erupting plasma using a differential emission measure method. The plasma erupts with a loop-like structure in X-ray and EUV. We estimate the mass of erupting plasma assuming a cylinder structure. In addition, we estimate the radiative loss, thermal conduction, thermal, and kinetic energies of the eruptive hot plasma. We find that the thermal conduction timescale is much shorter than the duration of the eruption. This result implies that additional heating during the eruption may be required to explain the hot plasma observations in X-rays.
Typically, photoacoustic images are obtained in water or gelatin because the impedance of these mediums is similar to that of the human body. However, these acoustic mediums can have an additional mass effect that changes the resonance frequency of the transducer. The acoustic radiation impedance in air is negligible because it is very small compared to that of the transducer. However, the high acoustic impedance of mediums such as the human body and water is quite large compared to that of air, making it difficult to ignore. Specifically, in a case where the equivalent mass is very small, such as with a micro-machined ultrasound transducer, the additional mass effects of the acoustic medium should be considered for an accurate resonance frequency design. In this study, a piezoelectric micro-machined ultrasonic transducer (pMUT) was designed to have a resonance frequency of 10 MHz in the acoustic medium of water, which has similar impedance as the human body. At that time, the resonance frequency of the pMUT in air was calculated at 15.2 MHz. When measuring the center displacement of the manufactured pMUT using a laser vibrometer, the resonance frequencies were measured as 14.3-15.1 MHz, which is consistent with the finite element method (FEM) simulation results. Finally, photoacoustic images of human hair samples were successfully obtained using the fabricated pMUT.
The aeroelastic stability of bridge decks equipped with multiple tuned mass dampers is studied. The problem is attacked in the time domain, by representing self-excited loads with the aid of aerodynamic indicial functions approximated by truncated series of exponential filters. This approach allows to reduce the aeroelastic stability analysis in the form of a direct eigenvalue problem, by introducing an additional state variable for each exponential term adopted in the approximation of indicial functions. A general probabilistic framework for the optimal robust design of multiple tuned mass dampers is proposed, in which all possible sources of uncertainties can be accounted for. For the purposes of this study, the method is also simplified in a form which requires a lower computational effort and it is then applied to a general case study in order to analyze the control effectiveness of regular and irregular multiple tuned mass dampers. A special care is devoted to mistuning effects caused by random variations of the target frequency. Regular multiple tuned mass dampers are seen to improve both control effectiveness and robustness with respect to single tuned mass dampers. However, those devices exhibit an asymmetric behavior with respect to frequency mistuning, which may weaken their feasibility for technical applications. In order to overcome this drawback, an irregular multiple tuned mass damper is conceived which is based on unequal mass distribution. The optimal design of this device is finally pursued via a full domain search, which evidences a remarkable robustness against frequency mistuning, in the sense of the simplified design approach.
In this study, a new check valve was studied to improve the load pressure of a brake system with a small piezoelectric-hydraulic pump. During the pressurization process, the steady-state pressure at the load is affected by the ratio of the cross-sectional area of the check valve the chamber pressure and load pressure. Since the flow path cover of the check valve is made wider than the cross-sectional area of the output flow to prevent backflow, a method of reducing the area ratio is proposed for a higher load pressure by mounting an additional mass to a thin plate spring type check valve. To identify the effect of mounting an additional mass to the existing check valve on the load pressure, a simple brake system with a small piezoelectric-hydraulic pump was modeled using a commercial code AMESim. The AMESim modeling was verified by comparing the simulation results with the experimental results of the pump the existing check valve. The additional mass was added to the verified AMESim modeling and higher load pressure was able to be obtained through simulation. The 35% performance improvement in load pressure identified by carrying out pressurization test of the brake system after adopting the new check valve the small piezoelectric-hydraulic pump.
Rotary kiln furnace is one of the most widely used reactors in industrial field. In this paper, 0-dimensional heat and mass balance for direct coal flame rotary kiln was performed preferentially, then a simplified 1-dimensional model was developed based on 0-dimensional analysis data to proceed additional thermal analysis. Compared the results with the currently operating rotary kiln data to validate 1-dimensional model. Through this procedure, it can help to derive fundamental idea for design and operation of rotary kiln.

In this paper, the ventilating and heating system of T-103 trainer aircraft were investigated and redesigned to improve its poor performance. The ventilation system of the trainer was designed to increase the mass flow rate of fresh air by using air intake valves. The flow-in air through the air intake valve is supplied to the cabin by the ram effect of aircraft and the propeller. And the additional heating system was installed to improve the temperature of the cabin inside. The wasted heat from the exhaust gas of the engines was used as heat source of the additional heating system by installing an heat exchanger around the exhaust nozzle. The additional fresh air and the heated air enter the cabin via two ducts mounted under the instrument panel and behind the pedal in the cabin. The additional ventilating and heating system can be controlled by the first pilot and the secondary pilot individually using the control knob equipped separately. After mounting the additional ventilating and heating system, evaluations such as inspection of parts and component, ground run-up test, in-flight test, user test, etc. were conducted. The result of the tests was sufficient to meet the requirements of the manuals, and the pilots were satisfied with the additionally mounted systems.
The airship is starting to receive new highlights as a stable floating platform. A floating platform can serve as a telecommunication relay station or an environmental outpost. Much of these operations require unmanned autonomous operation on the airship. Due to difficulties in modelling and identifying the airship, controlling the airship is not an easy task. Different from the normal aircraft, the airship is affected by "added mass" and buoyancy. The added mass is the additional mass felt required to move the object in a fluid. As we are searching for a stable floating platform, controlling the airship to keep station is critical. We use a simple airship model with added mass for simulation. Classical controller is used to find acceptable airship performances.
The performance of mass segmentation is greatly influenced by an initial position of a mass. Some researchers performed mass segmentation with the initial position of a mass given by radiologists. The purpose of our research is to find the initial position for mass segmentation and to notify the segmented mass to radiologists without any additional information on mammograms. The proposed system consists of breast segmentation by region growing and opening operations, decision of an initial seed with characteristics of masses, and mass segmentation by a level set segmentation. A seed for mass segmentation is set based on mass scoring measure calculated by block-based variances and masked information in a sub-sampled mammogram. We used a DDSM database to evaluate the system. The accuracy of mass detection is 78% sensitivity at 4 FP/image, and it reached 92% if multiple views for masses were considered.
