  • In this study, the strength and durability of compacted coal ash with proper mixing ratio of fly ash to bottom ash, such as 5:5 or 6:4, are examined for use of highway embankment and subgrade materials. Right after compaction, the strength of bituminous mixed coal ash is greater than that of anthracite mixed coal ash. The distinguished increase of strength with curing time is observed only in Ho-nam mixed coal ash that contains a lot of free lime, and the strength increase with curing time are not seen or little in the others. The durability in sinking test is good also in Ho-nam mixed coal ash, but satisfactory by adding 2% cement in the others. And it is seen that the effects of the strength increase with adding cement are greater in coal ash with proper mixing ratio than in fly ash or bottom ash respectly.

  • The aerodynamic performance of blunt trailing edge airfoils was investigated. The flow fields around the modified NACA64-418, which consists of the tip blade of the wind turbine and Mexico model of IEA wind, were analyzed. To imitate the repaired airfoil, the original NACA64-418 airfoil, a cambered airfoil, is modified by the adding thickness method, which is accomplished by adding the thickness symmetrically to both sides of the camber line. The thickness ratio of the blunt trailing edge of the modified airfoil, $t_{TE}/t_{max}$, is newly defined to analyze the effects of the blunt trailing edge. The shape functions describing the upper and lower surfaces of the modified NACA64-418 with blunt trailing edge are obtained from the curve fitting of the least square method. To verify the accuracy of the present numerical analysis, the results are first compared with the experimental data of NACA64-418 with high Reynolds number, $Re=6{\times}10^6$, measured in the Langley low-turbulence pressure tunnel. Then, the aerodynamic performance of the modified NACA64-418 is analyzed. The numerical results show that the drag increases, but the lift increases insignificantly, as the trailing edge of the airfoil is thickened. Re-circulation bubbles also develop and increase gradually in size as the thickness ratio of the trailing edge is increased. These re-circulations result in an increase in the drag of the airfoil. The pressure distributions around the modified NACA64-418 are similar, regardless of the thickness ratio of the blunt trailing edge.

  • Drag reduction is significant research in aircraft design due to its effect on the cost of operation and carbon footprint reduction. Aircraft currently use conventional solid winglets to reduce the induced drag, adding extra structural weight. Fluidic on-demand winglets can effectively reduce drag for low-speed flight regimes without adding any extra weight. These utilize the spanwise airflow from the wingtips using hydraulic actuators to create jets that negate tip vortices. This study develops a computational model to investigate fluidic on-demand winglets. The well-validated computational model is applied to investigate the effect of injection velocity and angle on the aerodynamic coefficients of a rectangular wing. Further, the turbulence parameters such as turbulent kinetic energy (TKE) and turbulent dissipation rate are studied in detail at various velocity injections and at an angle of 30°. The results show that the increase in injection velocity shifted the vortex core away from the wing tip and the increase in injection angle shifted the vortex core in the vertical direction. Further, it was found that a 30° injection is efficient among all injection velocities and highly efficient at a velocity ratio of 3. This technology can be adopted in any aircraft, effectively working at various angles of attack. The culmination of this study is that the implementation of fluidic winglets leads to a significant reduction in drag at low speeds for low aspect ratio wings.

  • In this study, a process is proposed to calculate analytical correction values for the vertical shortening of all columns on all floors in a high-rise building that minimizes the error between the structural analysis predictions and values measured during construction. The weight ratio and the most probable value were accordingly considered based on the properties of the shortening value analyzed at several points in each construction stage and the distance between these measured points and unmeasured points at which the shortening was predicted. The effective range and shortening value normalization were considered using the column grouping concept. These tools were applied to calculate the error ratio between the predicted and measured values on a floor where a measured point exists, and then determine the estimated error ratio and estimated error value for the unmeasured point using this error ratio. At points on a floor where no measured point exists, the estimated error ratio and the estimated error value were calculated by applying the most probable value considering the weight ratio for the nearest floor where measured points exist. In this manner, the error values and estimated error values can be determined at all points in a structure. Then, the analytical correction value, defined as this error or estimated error value, was applied by adding it to the predicted value. Finally, the adequacy of the proposed correction method was verified against measurements by applying the analytical corrections to all unmeasured points based on the points where the measurement exists.

  • The multi-carrier transmission signal in Multi-Carrier Code Division Multiple Access (MC-CDMA) has a high peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR), which results in nonlinear distortion and deteriorative system performance. An n-tuple selective mapping method is proposed to reduce the PAPR, in this paper. This method generates $2^n$ sequences of an original data sequence by adding n-tuple of n PAPR control bits to it followed by an interleaver and error-control code (ECC) to reduce its PAPR. The convolutional, Golay, and Hamming codes are used as ECCs in the proposed scheme. The proposed method uses different numbers of the n PAPR control bits to accomplish a noteworthy PAPR reduction and also avoids the need for a side-information transmission. The simulation results authenticate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, we propose an image enhancement method based on Multi-Scale Retinex theory that designs Unsharp Masking Filter (UMF) and emphasizes the contrast ratio adaptively. Unsharp Masking (UM) technique emphasizes image sharpness and improves contrast ratio by adding high frequency component to the original image. The high frequency component is obtained by differentiating between original image and low frequency image. In this paper, we present how to design an UMF kernel and to adaptively apply it to increase the contrast ratio according to multi-scale retinex theory which resembles human visual system. Experimental results show that the proposed method has better quantitative performance indexes such as PSNR, ambe & SSIM and better qualitative feature like halo artifact suppression.

  • A new Z-source inverter (ZSI) topology is developed to improve voltage boost ability. The proposed topology is modified from the switched inductor topology by adding some more inductors and diodes into inductor branch to the conventional Z-source network. The modulation methods developed for the conventional ZSI can be easily utilized in the proposed ZSI. The proposed ZSI has an ability to obtain a higher voltage boost ratio compared with the conventional ZSI under the same shoot-through duty ratio. Since a smaller shoot-through duty ratio is required for high voltage boost, the proposed ZSI is able to reduce the voltage stress on Z-source capacitor and inverter-bridge. Theoretical analysis and operating principle of the proposed topology are explicitly described. In addition, the design guideline of the proposed Z-source network as well as the PWM control method to achieve the desired voltage boost factor is also analyzed in detail. The improved performances are validated by both simulation and experiment.

  • Shear failure of reinforced concrete (RC) beams is a major concern for structural engineers. It has been shown through various studies that the shear strength and ductility of RC beams can be improved by adding steel fibers to the concrete. An accurate model predicting the shear strength of steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) beams will help SFRC to become widely used. An artificial neural network (ANN) model consisting of an input layer, a hidden layer of six neurons and an output layer was developed to predict the shear strength of SFRC slender beams without stirrups, where the input parameters are concrete compressive strength, tensile reinforcement ratio, shear span-to-depth ratio, effective depth, volume fraction of fibers, aspect ratio of fibers and fiber bond factor, and the output is an estimate of shear strength. It is shown that the model is superior to fourteen equations proposed by various researchers in predicting the shear strength of SFRC beams considered in this study and it is verified through a parametric study that the model has a good generalization capability.
