  • Objectives This study is aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of Chuna therapy for spondylolisthesis. Methods We searched th following 10 online databases without a language restriction (National Digital Science Library [NDSL], Research Information Sharing Service [RISS], Oriental Medicine Advanced Searching Integrated System [OASIS], KMBASE, MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane library, Ebscohost, EMBASE, Ovid, China National Knowledge Infrastru [CNKI]) to find randomized controlled trials that used Chuna therapy for spondylolisthesis. The methodological quality of each randomized controlled clinical trial was assessed using the Cochrane risk of bias tool and meta-analyses were perfomed. Results Eleven randomized controlled trials were included. Chuna therapy showed statistically significant reduction of symptoms. Meta-analysis showed positive results for Chuna therapy for spondylolisthesis in terms of therapeutic effects to traction, chinese medicine, therapeutic exercise. Conclusion In this study, we reviewed studies about Chuna therapy used for spondylolisthesis. The studies showed that Chuna therapy can significantly effective on spondylolisthesis. But according to Cochrane risk of bias evaluation method, most of the studies's risk of bias were unclear. Therefore, more high-quality studies will be needed.

  • Objectives The incidence of degenerative diseases is increasing as society ages, and this increased the economic burden on society. Oxidative stress was also under suspicion as one of the causes. Recent studies have found that Curcuma longa Rhizoma had antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimutagenic, and anticancer effects. Through this study, we figure out trends in Curcuma longa Rhizoma research and evaluate the therapeutic potential of Curcuma longa Rhizoma for dementia. Methods The search was made using domestic and international internet search sites. "Naver academic," "Google scholar," "Korea institute of oriental medicine (KIOM OASIS)," "Korean traditional knowledge portal (KTKP)," "Library of Congress," "Research information sharing service (RISS)," "National Digital Science Links (NDSL)," and "Pub med" are used to search. The searched for words were "turmeric," "Curcuma longa Rhizoma," "antioxidant," and "nerve regeneration." Results It could be seen that a lot of research done on Curcuma longa recently. In previous studies, the most common research disease was cancer. In previous studies, the most common effects of Curcuma longa was antioxidant and anticancer. Curcumin, Vitamin B1, and various essential oils were the functional components of Curcuma longa Rhizoma. Curcuma longa Rhizoma performs DPPH radical scavenging activity and ABTS radical cation decolorization activity; it inhibits NO and iNOS. Conclusion The destruction of nerve cells due to oxidative stress is a cause of dementia. Curcuma longa Rhizoma have antioxidant effects. Therefore, we believed that it is an effective treatment for dementia. Various studies will be made on Curcuma longa Rhizoma.

  • Objectives The aim of this study is to evaluate effects of hard board applied to acute low back pain patient by using Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) and Pain Rating Score(PRS). Methods From March. 2005 to October. 2005, 20 cases of acute low back pain were divided into 2 groups in sequence. Control group took a rest on the bed(marble-sponge mattress) and sample group took a rest on the hard board. Visual Analogue Scale(VAS) and Pain Rating Score(PRS) were used to assess the change of pain. VAS and PRS were checked 3 times before the treatment, after 3day treatment and 6day treatment. Results 1. After 3day and 6day treatment, there was statistical significance between control and sample group by VAS. 2. After 3day and 6day treatment, there was statistical significance between control and sample group by PRS. Conclusions On treating acute low back pain, it is more effective taking a rest on the hard board than taking a rest on the bed. Further study is needed about effects of hard board applied to acute low back pain patient.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study was to report the clinical results of various medical methods (including Chuna joint mobilization) used to treat a single patient with polyneuritis. Methods : We treated a 46 year-old female patient diagnosed with polyneuritis using various methods, including acupuncture, moxibustion, infrared therapy, herbal medication, Western medication, Chuna manual therapy, and physical therapy. We evaluated the results using the numeric rating scale (NRS), manual muscle test (MMT), active range of motion (ROM), modified barthel index (MBI). Other evaluation scale included Deep tendon reflex and thickness of muscle especially forearm and lower leg. Results : Following treatment using a combination of the above methods, the general overall condition of the patients was significantly improved. Furthermore, the NRS, MMT, MBI, and the active ROM scores were numerically improved. Conclusions : In this case, a single patient with polyneuritis was treated using a combination of Korean and Western medical methods. Although this study provides useful insight into treatment methods, further studies are required to determine the treatment effects of Korean medicine, specifically Chuna manual therapy, in patients with polyneuritis.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate the safety of SU-Eohyeol pharmacopuncture (SUEP) by assessing its potential to cause chromosomal abnormalities in Chinese hamster lung cells (CHL/IC). Methods: A dose-curve was conducted to determine the highest dose of SUEP. Doses of 10, 5, 2.5, 1.25, 0.625, and 0.313% were used, and no cytotoxicity or SUEP precipitation was observed. SUEP doses of 10, 5, and 2.5%, with positive and negative controls, were used in a chromosome aberration test. Results: In this study, the frequency of abnormal chromosomal cells in the SUEP group did not show a statistically significant difference from that of the negative control group in short-term treatments with and without metabolic activation and the continuous treatment without metabolic activation. Compared with the negative control group, the positive control group had a significantly higher frequency of cells with structural chromosomal abnormalities. This test's results satisfied all conditions for determining the results. Conclusion: SUEP did not induce chromosomal aberrations under the conditions of this study. Other toxicity evaluations, safety studies in humans, and various clinical trials are required to evaluate the safety and efficacy of SUEP.
