  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the sleep/activity patterns of premature babies. Method: The subjects were 55 premature babies who were hospitalized in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of one University Hospital in Daejeon from September 1, 2004 to March 31, 2006. The sleep/activity patterns of the premature babies were observed for 24 hours a day for 7 days. The observations were made and recorded by the researcher and 5 trained research assistants using NCASA records developed by Barnard et al. (1979). For statistical analysis, frequency, average, t-test, and Pearson correlation coefficients were used. Results: The infants slept more and had less awake periods during daytime than full-term infants. As the hospital stay of the premature babies increased, the amount of daytime sleep and total daily sleep decreased, and the amount of daytime awake periods increased. Conclusions: The findings suggest that the level of physical and physiological maturity of premature babies is one of the major variables that affect their sleep/activity patterns. Furthermore, the findings of this study will provide information about the sleep/activity patterns of premature babies, and present baseline data to develop the nursing intervention programs which support optimum development for the premature babies.

  • The regulatory mechanism of methionine biosynthesis in Corynebacterium glutamicum was analyzed at the protein arid gene expression level. O-Acetylhomoserine sulfhydraylase (encoded by metY) was inhibited by 10 mM methionine to a residual activity of 10% level, whereas no such inhibition was found with cystathionine $\gamma$-synthase (encoded by metB) and cystathionine $\beta$-lyase (encoded by metC). The enzymatic activity of homoserine acetyltransferase (encoded by metX) was repressed to a residual activity of 25% level by 10 mM methionine which was added to the growth medium. Cystathionine $\gamma$-synthase and cystathionine $\beta$-lyase were also repressed by 10 mM methionine, but only to a residual activity of 50-70% level. O-Acetylhomoserine sulfhydrylase was very sensitive to repression by 10 mM methionine, showing residual activity of 13%. In addition, homoserine acetyltransferase was also repressed by 10 mM cysteine to 50% of its original activity. No repression of the enzymes by S-adenosyl methionine was observed. The pattern of repression by methionine indicated that the metB and aecD genes might be regulated by a common mechanism, while the metA and metY genes are differently regulated.

  • The present researches were carried out to investigate the peroxidase activity in association with the reactions of the 4 cultivars of rice plant, Nagdong, Jinheung, Nongbaek and Taebaek to Pyricularia oryzae race KJ-I0l and KJ-301. Although the peroxidase activity was increased during the growth of the rice seedlings, the significant difference in the activity was not found among 4 cultivars. After inoculation of the fungus, the peroxidase activity was enhanced in diseased leaves, being considerably higher in the compatible than in the incompatible cultivars. The isozyme bands of peroxidases observed in mycelium of rice blast fungus were not found in the diseased leaves on the gel electrophoresis. The peroxidase activity was not affected by the increased application of nitrogenous fertilizer.

  • Botnet is a type of dangerous malware. Botnet attack with a collection of bots attacking a similar target and activity pattern is called bot group activities. The detection of bot group activities using intrusion detection models can only detect single bot activities but cannot detect bots' behavioral relation on bot group attack. Detection of bot group activities could help network administrators isolate an activity or access a bot group attacks and determine the relations between bots that can measure the correlation. This paper proposed a new model to measure the similarity between bot activities using the intersections-probability concept to define bot group activities called as B-Corr Model. The B-Corr model consisted of several stages, such as extraction feature from bot activity flows, measurement of intersections between bots, and similarity value production. B-Corr model categorizes similar bots with a similar target to specify bot group activities. To achieve a more comprehensive view, the B-Corr model visualizes the similarity values between bots in the form of a similar bot graph. Furthermore, extensive experiments have been conducted using real botnet datasets with high detection accuracy in various scenarios.

  • Effect of plant hormones on the leaf senescence of mung bean (Phseoln radiatus) was investigated by measuring the changes of reducing sugar contents and invertase isozyme activities in detached leaves treated with NAA, $GA_3$ or BA. During dark-induced senescence, reducing sugar contents in the detached leaves increased temporarily at 4 6, thereafter decreased rapidly and reached minimum values within 7-14 6. The pattern of soluble acid invertase activity in the senescing leaves kept in the dark was similar to that of reducing sugar accumulation, whereas the activities of alkaline and extracellular invertases were not significantly changed during leaf senescence. Therefore, these results suggest that soluble acid invertase, but not alkaline and extracellular invertases, induces the accumulation of reducing sugar during leaf senescence of Rung bean plants. Exogenous NAA application had little or no effect In the increase of soluble acid invertase activity during dark-induced senescence compared to the control. However, exogenous applications of $GA_3$ and BA led to the increase of soluble acid invertase activity in the senescing leaves. Particularly, BA application was very effective In enhancing the activity of soluble acid invertase as well as in delaying chlorophyll breakdown during dark-induced senescence. These results suggest, therefore, that BA regulates the activity of soluble acid invertase, which leads to the accumulation of reducing sugar, and the stability of photosynthetic apparatus to delay leaf senescence.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare the energy expenditure and energy intake of normal-weight and overweight Korean adults. We recruited 242 adults to determine resting energy expenditure, physical activity and energy intake. Resting energy expenditure was measured by indirect calorimetry. Energy intake for consecutive two days was assessed by 24 hour recall method. Daily activity pattern for 24 hour was collected from each subject. Body weight, lean body mass and percentage body fat were measured by INBODY 3.0. The subject were divided into normal ($20\leqBMI$ < 25) and overweight ($BMI \geq 25$) groups by BMI. There was no significant difference in intake of energy between two groups. Energy intake of each group was lower than the 7th Korean RDA of energy. Overweight subjects showed significantly lower REE/kg body weight. However, REE/kg lean body mass (LBM) did not differ between the two groups. Total activity energy was significantly higher in the overweight group compared to the normal group. Daily activity coefficient of overweight group in male was lower than that of normal group. Daily activity coefficient was almost same in two female groups. LBM was highly correlated with REE and total energy expenditure. We concluded that the overweight group consumed more energy than the normal group due to the heavier body weight.

  • Objectives : Physical activity is known as beneficial to mental health like decreasing depression and stress. In this study, we tried to find out the relationship between body composition, stress, depression, and self-esteem with physical activity level. Methods : International Physical Activity Questionnaire(IPAQ)-short form, SRRS(Social readjustment rating scale), SRI(Stress response index), and BDI(Beck's depression index), SES(Self-esteem scale) were given to peri-menopausal women aged 45-55 and BMI$\geq$23kg/m2. They were given written consent and this study is performed under the permission of institutional review board of Kyung Hee East-west Neo Medical Center. Results : The mean of physical activity of total subjects was 2406MET-min/week(n=42). The physical activity of overweight(23kg/m2$\leq$BMI<25kg/m2) and obese(BMI$\geq$25kg/m2) permimenopausal women was 1428MET-min/week and 2970MET-min/week(p<0.05) respectively. When three levels of physical activity pattern(inactive, minimally active, and HEPA(Health-enhancing physical activity) active) was analyzed, all of them were heavily relied on the activity intensities of walking. The scores of BDI, SRRS, and SRI were lower and that of SES were higher in HEPA active group, not showing statical significance. Anger(subscale of SRI) measures were lower and SES measures were higher in HEPA active group than others among overweight women(p<0.05). Conclusions : The level of physical activity of peri-menopausal women was on the average, but the vigorous activity is thought to be necessary. The HEPA active group showed lower depression, stress and higher self-esteem than minimally active and inactive group.
