  • This paper proposes a control strategy of total output power ripple cancellation for both of Machine-Side Converter (MSC) and Grid-Side Converter (GSC) in a DFIG under unbalanced grid conditions. The proposed control strategy for the MSC is the zero torque ripple control algorithm with an enhanced LVRT capability. The control algorithm for the MSC exhibits reduced torque pulsation in steady-state unbalanced grid conditions. In addition, this control algorithm also minimizes a peak value of rotor current in transient unbalanced grid conditions. The total output power ripple cancellation control algorithm is adopted in the GSC. The total output power ripple cancellation is achieved by nullifying the oscillating component of the total output active and reactive power at the summing point of stator and rotor of DFIG. The proposed control strategy for the GSC reduces the output power oscillation leading to the improved quality of wind farms output.

  • The rising penetration of renewable energy resulted in the development of grid-connected large-scale power plants. Therefore, grid stabilization, which depends on the system-type or grid of each country, plays an important role and has been strengthened by different grid codes. With this background, VDE-AR-N 4105 for photovoltaic (PV) systems connected to the low-voltage grid and the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW) introduced the medium-voltage grid code for connecting power plants to the grid and they are the most stringent certifications. In this paper, an optimal control strategy scheme for three-phase grid-connected PV system is enhanced with VDE-AR-N 4105 and BDEW grid code, where both active/reactive powers are controlled. Simulation and experimental results of 100kW PV inverter are shown to verify the effectiveness of the proposed implemental control strategy.

  • Microgrid usually consists of a cluster of distributed generators(DGs), energy storage systems and loads, and can operate in the grid-connected mode and the islanded mode. This paper presents detailed descriptions of two different options for controlling the active power of DGs in the microgrid. One is regulating the power injected by the unit to a desired amount(Unit output power control) and the other is to regulate the flow of active power in the feeder where the unit is installed to a constant(Feeder flow control). Frequency-droop characteristics are used to achieve good active power sharing when the microgrid operates in the islanded mode. The change in the frequency and the active power output of DGs are investigated according to the control mode and the configuration of DGs when the microgrid is disconnected from the main grid. From the analysis, this paper proposes a method to determine the droop constant of DGs operating in the feeder flow control mode. Simulation results using the PSCAD/EMTDC are presented to validate the approach, which shows good performance as opposed to the conventional one.

  • The importance of power system stability has been emphasized with an increase of wind energy penetration in the power system. Accordingly, the guarantee on various control capabilities, including active and reactive power control of wind farms, was regarded as the most important aspect for the connection to the grid. To control the wind farm active power, the wind farm controller was introduced. The wind farm controller decides the power set points for each wind turbine generating unit and each wind turbine generating unit controls its power according to the set points from the wind farm controller. Therefore, co-relationship between wind farm controller and wind turbine controllers are significantly important. This paper proposes some control methods of wind farm active power control based on modified wind turbine control for power system stability and structures to connect wind turbine controllers to wind farm controller. Besides, this paper contributes to development of control algorithm considering not only electrical components but also mechanical components. The proposed contributions were verified by full simulation including power electronics and turbulent wind speed. The scenario refers to the active power control regulations of the Eltra and Elkraft system in Denmark.

  • For grid-connected LCL-filtered inverters, dual-loop current control with an inner-loop active damping (AD) based on capacitor current feedback is generally used for the sake of current quality. However, existing studies on capacitor current feedback AD with a control delay do not reveal the mathematical relation among the dual-loop stability, capacitor current feedback factor, delay time and LCL parameters. The robustness was not investigated through mathematical derivations. Thus, this paper aims to provide a systematic study of dual-loop current control in a digitally-controlled inverter. At first, the stable region of the inner-loop AD is derived. Then, the dual-loop stability and robustness are analyzed by mathematical derivations when the inner-loop AD is stable and unstable. Robust design principles for the inner-loop AD feedback factor and the outer-loop current controller are derived. Most importantly, ensuring the stability of the inner-loop AD is critical for achieving high robustness against a large grid impedance. Then, several improved approaches are proposed and synthesized. The limitations and benefits of all of the approaches are identified to help engineers apply capacitor current feedback AD in practice.

  • This paper proposes a novel active frequency drift (AFD) method to improve the islanding detection performance with minimum current harmonics. To detect the islanding phenomenon of grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) inverters concerning the safety hazards and possible damage to other electric equipment, anti-islanding methods have been described. The AFD method that uses chopping fraction (cf) enables the islanding detection to drift up (or down) the frequency of the voltage during the islanding situation. However, the performance of the conventional AFD method is inefficient and causes difficulty in designing the appropriate cf value to meet the limit of harmonics. In this paper, the periodic chopping fraction based on a novel AFD method is proposed. This proposed method shows the analytical design value of cf to meet the test procedure of IEEE Std. 929-2000 with power quality and islanding detection time. To verify the validation of the proposed method, the islanding test results are presented. It is confirmed that the proposed method has not only less harmonic distortion but also better performance of islanding detection compared with the conventional AFD method.

  • Islanding is a phenomenon that EPS(Electric Power System) is continuously energized by PV PCS(Photovoltaic Power Conditioning System) even when EPS is isolated from the grid. Unintentional islanding will result in safety hazard, power quality degradation and many other issues. So, islanding protection of grid-connected PV PCS is a key function for standards compliance. Nowadays, many anti-islanding schemes are researched. But existing anti-islanding schemes used in PV PCS have power quality degradation and non-detection zone issues. This paper analyses not only detection performance of existed anti-islanding schemes using active frequency drift but also THD of PCS output current according to each value disturbance for anti-islanding. In addition, the lowest value of disturbance in each scheme was tabulated under guarantee of anti-islanding condition.

  • This paper proposes a grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) system, consisting of Voltage-fed dual-active-bridge (DAB) dc-dc converter with single phase inverter. The proposed converter allows a small dc-link capacitor, so that system reliability can be improved by replacing electrolytic capacitors with film capacitors. The double line frequency free maximum power point tracking (MPPT) is also realized in the proposed converter by using Ripple Correlation method. First of all, to eliminate the double line frequency ripple which influence the reduction of DC source capacitance, control is developed. Then, a designing of Current control in DQ frame is analyzed and to fulfill the international harmonics standards such as IEEE 519 and P1547, $3^{rd}$ harmonic in the grid is directly compensated by the feedforward terms generated by the PR controller with the grid current in stationary frame to achieve desire Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). 5-kW PV converter and inverter module with a small dc-link film capacitor was built in the laboratory with the proposed control and MPPT algorithm. Experimental results are given to validate the converter performance.

  • In DC distribution systems, a TAB converter employing multiple transformers is one of the most widely used topologies due to its high power density, modularizability, and cost-effectiveness. However, the conventional control technique for a grid-connected mode in the TAB converter cannot maintain its reliability for an islanding mode under a blackout situation. In this paper, the islanding mode control technique is proposed to solve this issue. To verify the relative stability and dynamic characteristics of the control technique, small-signal models of both the grid connected and the islanding mode are derived. Based on the small-signal models, PI controllers are designed to provide suitable power control. The proposed control technique, the accuracy of small-signal models, and the performance of the controllers are verified by simulations and experiments with a 1-kW prototype TAB converter.
